Internet trends come and go so quickly that it’s hard to keep track of all of them. Others are so quirky that you wonder whether someone’s pulling your leg. Fridgescaping is a massively popular trend that you might not be aware of. In short, it involves styling and decorating the inside of your refrigerator and putting your food in pleasant-looking containers. It has its fair share of pros and cons.
It might seem aesthetic and fancy for some, but not everyone finds it practical. It can even lead to tension in relationships. Case in point, u/Icy-Shelter9897 turned to the AITA community for some heartfelt advice after he called out his wife for her fridgescaping hobby. Read on for the story and the advice the net gave the exhausted husband.
Bored Panda has reached out to the author via Reddit, and we’ll update the article as soon as we hear back from him.
Fridgescaping involves decorating the interior of your fridge to make it more aesthetically pleasing. It’s fun for some but impractical for others

Fridgescaping is a viral trend that has recently spread all over the internet
The fridgescaping trend is slightly paradoxical. On the one hand, few people have ever heard of it. On the other hand, it’s made a huge splash on the internet.
For instance, on TikTok, there are a jaw-dropping 158.8 million (yes, million) posts related to the hobby.
Technically speaking, the trend isn’t that new either. It’s just enjoying a resurgence. Good Housekeeping reports that the term ‘fridgescaping’ was first coined all the way back in 2010, by blogger Kathy Perdue, from Good Life of Design.
At the time, she wrote: “Why not put your everyday food items in pretty containers and have something pretty to look at when you open the door?”
Fridgescaping mashes together elements of interior design and antiquing. But instead of decorating just your home, you also focus on how your fridge looks when you open it. It’s nice to live surrounded by beauty.
In short, someone may add some nice-looking pitchers, trays, jars, jugs, or baskets inside their refrigerator. Others might decorate the interior with flowers and vases. Still, others might add antiques or pictures… even additional lights to be even more atmospheric.
It’s a fascinating way to express yourself and unleash your creativity and artistic spirit in your surroundings.
Living with other people at home means that you have to look for compromises

That doesn’t mean that the hobby isn’t without its downsides, however. It can be time-consuming. And it’s not very practical.
For one, if you’re constantly pouring drinks into pitchers and jars, and putting food into baskets and on trays, that’s time you’re not spending on other things. Like quality time with your loved ones. Chores. Other passion projects. Playing with your pets. Sleep! And anything else that you care about.
Meanwhile, for someone who simply wants to grab a bite to eat after a long and weary day at work or school, it’s frustrating to have to constantly move vases and pictures aside.
If you genuinely enjoy fridgescaping—more power to you! It can be a great way to show off your imagination to your online followers and fellow content creators, too.
But following internet trends just because everyone else is doing what’s popular might not make everyone at home happy.
Fridgescaping is far easier to do if you live alone or if everyone at home is a big fan of the same hobby. When you live with other people, naturally, some friction is unavoidable. You inevitably have to compromise on some things.
It’s important to remember that you’re a team and that it matters how you say something, not just what you say
There will be moments when your partner’s behavior starts to affect you in a negative way. They’re not a mind-reader, so if you want the problem solved, you’ll have to speak up at some point.
However, it’s not just what you say, it’s how you say it that also matters. Happy and healthy long-term relationships require trust, openness, and mutual respect.
So, while honesty is paramount, it also helps if you’re as diplomatic as possible. The best approach is not to accuse or judge your partner. It’s also probably not a good idea to tell someone you love that their hobbies are dumb.
Instead, it’s best to calmly explain how their behavior affects you and how you feel. In other words, stick to “I” statements so that your significant other doesn’t get defensive.
What do you think of the fridgescaping trend, dear Pandas? Have you ever decorated the interior of your refrigerator?
How would you react if one day you went to get a glass of juice and found that your partner created a fairytale landscape around the food? How would you have handled the author’s situation? Let us know what you think in the comments!

The fridge door should never be open long enough to "fridgescape" it. It raises the temperature of a space that is supposed to be kept at a relatively constant 4°c (I think?) which makes the food less safe. Also, it's a waste of electricity.
Nice jars and pots? Sure. But framed pics as in the photos? Lololol, that's stupid
OP puts more effort into posting on Reddit than actual, loving communication with his wife. (I’d hate the fridgescaping too, including the name, but that’s really beside the point. He might have stupid hobbies too.)
I think you just explained why I really hate AITA posts.
Load More Replies...Does that include AITA posts? And, uh, what about comments on those posts?
Load More Replies...I'm sorry, but I personally think fridge scapeing IS indeed stupid - and especially so if you don't live alone. If there's just you, sure, go ahead and put flowers, ribbons and confetti in your fridge. But if an entire family uses that fridge? Absolutely NOT. Just because you want to see frilly stuff in your fridge doesn't mean everyone else does. Not to mention that all this stuff that has no business being in a fridge can turn unsanitary real quick. Especially flowers can attract flies when you open and close it.
Goodness me, what is the point? I am sure it looks pretty, but there are plenty of other places where her artistic expression could be channeled positively. Holding the fridge open to admire the inside wastes power, and electricity is WAYYY too expensive here for that! Also, frankly, fridges are for food and I think the best looking fridge is one which is clean, and full of good healthy food (and loads of cheese!). Cheese - beautiful. Flowers and ribbons - nope!
How on earth could such a thing become a hobby? Or a trend? I have never seen something so stupid. Like, flowers and framed pictures??
What a ridiculous thing to do to fridge! But op sounds like a ðick.
Honestly, peeps are extremely oversensitive these days. He used the words 'stupid' for a stupid trend, and she takes it to the heart like an actual arrow. When I put certain veggies - or Egg mayonnaise, for example, in the fridge, it smells godawful, even though they don't smell bad OUT of the fridge, so why add flowers/plants?!!! And photos/ornaments? IMO, it IS stupid - and not exactly hygienic. Through history there have been stupid trends, and I doubt it'll ever change, but for this post, the bloke is NTA, and for his spouse to be so offended by such a little thing, is, to me, odd - unless it turns out he's an actual AH to her in general.
Forget the aggrivation of it, IN WHAT WORLD IS STORING ALL THAT STUFF WHERE YOU STORE FOOD PEOPLE EAT?? Salmonella, e.coli, botulism, mold from food that spoils hidden behind a vase that gets overlooked. My GOD the sheer HEALTH HAZARD this presents is mind boggling! Point that out to wife when you can, it might help her understand why it's a bad idea. If she REALLY loves making the fridge insta worthy, buy her a junk one that doesn't work. Clean it up good, touch up any scratches or scuffs. Take the fridge door off, and use a strip hinge to cover the space where the door was with plexiglass. Add a decorative handle. And she has her own little fridge to scape with all her heart. You could even buy some of those fancy undercabinet lights to strategicly place to light her new display.
I like my fridge space organized, but functional. This sounds like a nightmare.
To each his own. I'm not judging, but that is definitely not for me.
Stupid stupid nonsense, decorating the inside of the f*****g fridge. What will they think of next, let's all put f*****g palm trees in the bolloxing toilet.
Buy her a second fridge. Then she can fridgescape to her heart's content..
A mini fridge, maybe in a bedroom or spare bath where she may keep her skin care or cosmetics sounds like a good idea. (I think I may have just increased my credit card debt-in my head)
Load More Replies...I can only GUESS where this trend started. Fine if it's your own fridge, but not a shared one.
Fridgescaping is just about the stupidest thing I've heard of in a long while, but even I, a single 50 year old, knows that you should never call something someone else you care about stupid, and definitely not in the middle of a confrontation/argument.. THAT'S just stupid..
I am all about baskets in the pantry and a neatly organised fridge and if the containers are cute it's a bonus... But DECORATE it? The woman needs another pasttime.
“Why not put your everyday food items in pretty containers and have something pretty to look at when you open the door?” The fridge looking pretty is one thing. But it needs to be kept practical.
Fridgescaping? Dumb…Husband? Also dumb. He "doesn't use the fridge much" so, how does this affect him in the least? His wife apparently is doing all the food prep, serving, getting, taking out of the fridge and putting it back in…so if she wants flowers in there to make her heart sing when she does this day in day out drudgery…she should be able to put flowers in there. And the husband has zero say on it…its HER workspace not his. He needs to apologize and also thank her for taking care of him so consistently that he almost never needs to "use the fridge".
Everyone is allowed to have stupid hobbies, I have had my fair share, But when your hobby involves others, you need their permission. The fridge is shated space, her decorating hobby is no more important than my undecorating hobby. His communication skills need work, but hers need more.
What a stupid trend. Yet another example of someone not using their own brain cells.
The commenters who told the OP that he was the AH for HOW he told his wife about it, seem to be forgetting something: how rude and unpleasant she was to him when her "decorations" weren't put back exactly the way she wanted them to be. This was manipulation, pure and simple. She had a kick in the butt, and she had it coming. If she wants to fridgescape, she can get her own little fridge to do it in. With no food in it.
It's not impractical, it's just stupid. It's a communal space which exists for storing food so as to extend it's usable lifespan. If you're having to spend multiple minutes every time you open the damn door digging through pointless b******t to find foor, and multiple minutes more to rearrange said pointless b******t, you're threatening the longevity of the food, which is to say you're threatening the safety of your family. Increasing food waste, and increasing energy usage, all because tiktok told you it was the "hottest new trend" What's next? Painting little murals on the inside of the toilet bowl? "you better put it back the way you found it!" We live in the dumbest possible timeline.
What the f**k are some people in the world doing?! Fridgescaping?!!!!! Really?!
There's an easy enough fix: get another fridge and let her decorate it all she wants. Make it a small dorm room sized one if you don't have a lot of space. It doesn't even have to live in the kitchen.
whoever has fridgescaping as a "hobby" needs to find better hobbies. Your fridge is for food. It doesn't need to be *aesthetic* and your fridge door really shouldn't be open long enough for what it looks like inside to matter (so long as its clean), plus overcrowding your fridge with useless ornaments will only make your temperature inconsistent, thus your fridge won't be working properly. (that said, the same applies to overpacking it with food)
Food only in fridge. No candles or grass or pictures. Go decorate a cupboard or something. I get it brings her joy but if if my wife did this I'd say. Honey that's great, take a pic of it and then put it back to normal.
Yes, he is the a*****e. He is an a*****e for going on to Reddit to complain about his wife and gather up a bunch of random people so he can say "See? Gobblemyknob69 agrees with me!" And for those randos who feel the need to chime in, here's a radical suggestion: if it doesn't affect *you*, and doesn't harm anyone else, then just shut the f**k up and move on. This is **nothing**. There are real problems in the world; this isn't one of them.
The effort towards these ridiculous "trends" is getting out of hand. If it's something positive as in garbage clean up or cleaning animals impacted by oil spills those get ignored. The majority of the world is running on D for dumb & that's why Darwin Awards are needed.
This is the first I've heard of fridgescaping. When I started reading this, I thought, "yes, flowers taking up space in front of the food is very impractical". But when I got to the part of him saying he rarely uses the fridge and doesn't cook much, I turned to, "then let her do the f*ck what she wants with it." Still silly though, but that's an opinion.
A fridge is for food . Not flowers and vases. How does anything not food withstand the temperature?
Wife needs to get a life, maybe a part time job. This hobby of hers is getting obsessive and really annoys 2 out of 3 people in the household.
All the comments suggesting that better communication is required - he told her it was stupid. It is stupid, therefore that is clearly conveyed and she needed telling.
You’re missing the point, though. Being rude isn’t the same as communicating in a healthy and kind way.
Load More Replies...I’ve gone full scorched earth with my fridgescaping, I’ve gone minimalist and I insist on only having things in the fridge that belong in the fridge. When I open the door I get a reassuring view of food and drinks, zero clutter, no flowers (I refuse to cook with edible flowers) but there is a drawer with fresh herbs in it, they are out of view though, I couldn’t allow them to spoil the overall starkness I was looking for.
