Wild Bobcat Makes This Huge Leap Over The River Seem Effortless And The Video Goes Viral
Bobcats are elusive and nocturnal, so they’re rarely spotted in daylight. But this time, we are in for a treat for all the wild feline fans out there.
The impressive moment of a bobcat leaping across the weir for what seems like forever was captured on camera in Pecan Island, Louisiana. The feline is seen composing himself right before the jump and reaching the other side in one single move.
His effortless and graceful travel in midair may make you wanna try that (at home). But trust me, there’s only 1 Olympic gold medal and the winner is clear. Plus, it’s dangerous, so let’s leave the flying bit for dreams only.

Bored Panda contacted Laurel Serieys, a wildlife biologist at University of Cape Town and project coordinator at Urban Caracal Project, to find out more about the long distance jumpers. It turns out, “bobcats can easily jump several meters” and many smaller cats about their size can do it too.
In this particular case, “the bobcat is trying to avoid getting wet, and given what agile athletic animals they are, jumping across the bridge is not too difficult,” commented Laurel. In fact, the cat may have been up for some prey. “We’ve seen bobcats hunting near water for water fowl, so perhaps it was hunting nearby and trying to get from one side of the water to the other.”
Meanwhile, larger cats can jump much further than this without too much effort. Laurel said that “if they are jumping across something, their leap can reach 6 meters.”
While out fishing in Pecan Island, this person spotted the cat and started recording

I had a cat 20 years ago now, Isis, (yeah, we didn't shun that name yet and it was an Egyptian goddess first, dammit!) and she could get to the top of the fridge from the floor without a running start. I'd also see her on the roof sometimes, and she always got up (and down) somehow...Never witnessed that happening, sadly. RIP Isis.

Cats as a group are some of the most impressive animals on the planet. Although packs of canines have higher kill rates, individually cats blow canids out of the water! Unfortunately, the big cats are disappearing all over the world; many Tiger subspecies are now extinct in the wild, and mountain lion populations are plummeting due to a variety of human caused disasters. Americans are extremely guilty in this worldwide extinction. Despite plummeting numbers, greedy "sportsmen" continue to hunt lions and justify it with the old lie "it helps the local economy" (less than 3% of that money goes local and animal populations are being decimated). They lobby for animals to be removed from the Endangered Species list when numbers aren't even close to sustainable and lobby twice as hard to gut laws ptohibiting traffic in endangered animal body parts (see captive tigers in the US slaughtered and sold to Chinese consumers, directly contributing to the demand for illegally poached tigers).

That cat cleared the distance with zero problem and little thought. He did what a bobcat does. Just another moment in his day. I also grew up watching Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom. Five kids around the television learning about the natural earth and all of Mother Nature’s animals. There are some good shows on now on National Geographic channel and on Animal Planet.

Responsible zoos that are part of the conservation effort are OK. S****y tourist zoos and private owners who like the thrill of owning a dangerous animal are not OK.

I don't understand how this can be surprising to people? Do they live under rocks? Animals in the wild evolved over millions of years to fill niches and they don't have the luxury of losing those skills.

The response to this is kind of sad to me. Animals in the wild are not like the pets we keep in our lives. They endure the harshest of cold, the blistering heat and constant threats to their life as just another minute in another day in their lives. They are tougher than any of us will ever be, stronger than we can comprehend and far more deadly than we give them credit for. I come from a generation that knows these things because we were taught about them in school. We regularly watched animals do the most amazing things on Mutual Of Omaha's Wild Kingdom every Sunday evening. To most of you it seems incomprehensible, but that cat could have made twice that jump look just as effortless. Sadly, most of you have never seen anything more "wild" than a stray dog or cat.
