It's called total control of the media, culture, entertainment, education, information and anything else that would make people want to seek a better life. Dictators even in large groups are human excrement, well even more so.

I've been thinking of this China - Western differences a lot in the past months, being a person grew up in China now living in the US always believing in brave and free. Personally I settled on the idea that it is a cultural difference, which is so deeply engraved by all the past history. Weather a whole culture want to change or not really cannot and would not be changed by pressure from outsiders. Best solution in my opinion is to recognize the differences, handle them with care and open mind, show good nature to others whenever possible. And with a belief that whatever is the true common value by god will eventually prevail and dominate.
