The Fascinating History Of Bodega Cats

Have you ever walked into a corner store or bodega and noticed a friendly feline lounging behind the counter? These cats, known as bodega cats, have a long and fascinating history dating back to ancient civilizations.

In ancient Egypt, cats were revered as sacred animals and were often kept in temples to protect against rodents. This tradition eventually spread to other parts of the world, including Spain, where cats were introduced to stores and warehouses to control rodent populations.

Bodega cats arrived in the United States with immigrants from Spain and Latin America, who brought their feline friends with them to control pests in their small businesses. Today, bodega cats can be found in corner stores, delis, and other small businesses in cities across the country.

But bodega cats aren’t just there to keep the mice at bay. They also serve as companions and mascots for the store owners and employees, bringing joy and warmth to the workplace. Many bodega cats have become local celebrities, with customers coming from far and wide to visit and interact with them.

If you’re lucky enough to come across a bodega cat on your travels, be sure to give them a pat on the head and a treat (if the store owner allows it). Who knows, you may just make a new furry friend.

Hey there, Pandas! My name is Diana (though some prefer to refer to me as Diane, Deanna, and even Liana sometimes), and I am a Community Post Moderator Lead for Bored Panda. As my position title states, I am one of the people (employed Pandas for bamboo) over here who work with the community side of things on this website to ensure all is well, and while at that, I also help various creators and artists get recognition for the incredible work they do by connecting them to a large worldwide audience. Other than that, outside of work, you can find me brewing a nice cup of coffee, making a pizza from scratch, or baking brownies. I also love traveling, concerts, and cats (heavy on that, because I am a cat mom).
