This Pallet Bar In My Backyard Cost Me Only $112 To Make

My name is Paul Nowak, and I’m a hobbyist woodworker from Sheffield, in jolly old England. My latest woodworking project was a resounding success! I constructed a beautiful, stylish, black-painted backyard bar almost entirely out of pallets and scraps of wood. I always wanted to make a home garden bar as we spend family time in the garden. The pallet project took two days to build after I collected everything together.

This little DIY project of mine cost me only around 90 pounds (112 dollars). Once I got all the materials I needed for the wood bar, the actual building part was fairly quick — it took me only a couple days, from start to finish. I got most of the materials I needed all for free: the pallets and crates cost absolutely nothing. However, I did need to spend some money on the roof (that was around 40 pounds or 50 dollars), the paint (around 30 pounds; 37 dollars), and some odds and ends. A good mate of mine owns a pub, so he gave me some beer mats and other things for free.

I’ve always liked woodwork, I should have done it when I left school but I never did

I even installed a working fridge in my DIY bar, so all my drinks can stay nice and cool, and there’s no need to go running into the kitchen every time I feel a bit thirsty. I always loved woodworking, and sometimes I still wonder what would have happened if I took it up professionally after leaving school. I do decking for friends and family, but this is the very first bar I’ve built. However, it’s just the first of many bars, I hope. My friends and family loved my project, and it’s been amazing how people have reacted to my bar online. I’ve already gotten over 47,000 likes and 75,000 comments. All I need now is a sponsor or a business to help me keep this going.

40 [pounds] for the roof…with paint (about £30) it was 80 or 90 [pounds]

My bar idea got quite a bit of attention from everyone, including Celtic Marches Beverages. They liked it so much that they stocked it full of delicious drinks. Cheers!

Your back garden must be huge, you got a trampoline and a bar most of us lose the whole of the back garden to a trampoline so congratulations on both the brilliant use of wooden pallets and the space you have. Well done.

This month I started planning creating some art work using pallets. You may already know this but wood pallets have an IPPC stamp which indicates the country and any toxic chemicals that could have been used on them. Just mentioning it for awareness since you hope to build more bars so that you don't end up with any wood containing toxic chemicals. See https://www.1001pallets.com/pallet-safety/

Top work Paul, love this, I’ve been looking online as I want to have a go myself and this is one of the best I’ve seen in terms of end result and speed of getting it built. Did you sand the palettes or just put them up them paint them? I’m going to try this weekend, can you remember how many pallets you used and what was the roof material? Cheers and big love to Sheffield from Manchester!

I didn't see the cash register anywhere. Guests don't drink for FREE, do they?

Incredible what a creative mind and superior skills can produce! In the US, though, pallets aren't exactly free - they belong to somebody even though they may be stacked/stored in seemingly random piles, and taking them would be theft.

This doesn't look like it will last long in any place with weather. One wind storm and you are done for. Reinforce that.

Fabulous. I’ve wanted an outdoor kitchen on our patio forever but a structure like this will be an awesome and much-utilized “placeholder” until then. Well done, you! And thanks for the inspiration!
