Have you ever wondered what our homes will look like in 10 years time? 50 years? Even a century from now? British home interiors company Jacobs & Dalton just couldn’t wait to see what the home decor world has in store for us in the future, so they decided to ask AI to help them predict what’s to come.
Instead of casting around in the dark, the company pulled together a vast list of data on historic trends, then provided the AI model with the information on home decor and interior design trends from the 1920s and 2020s, based on mainstream, overarching general home trends. The goal was to inform the machine learning on how home design trends of the past were influenced.
They then asked the AI tool to suggest interior trends by decade for the next century, taking into account the unpredictability of technological advancements, societal shifts, global events and cultural movements. The speculative predictions are based on the patterns of the past and current trajectories, and the generator did warn that there are a number of unpredicatable factors that can influence trends that we are yet to know of (2020 showed us that for sure!).
Finally, these results were fed into an AI image generator with some pretty wild and wonderful results! The trends include features such as self-repairing fabrics in the 2050s, AI driven mood-responsive patterns in the 2080s and climate responsive materials in the 2060s!
