On the outside, a pallet of mulch seems pretty boring, but it might be pretty interesting on the inside. Some time ago, a group of Home Depot employees stumbled across a raccoon nest in one of these pallets and even though the mom ran away from the intruders, her babies were peacefully waiting for her to come back. Baby animals are hard to resist, but three little furballs with tails the size of pipe cleaners, snuggled up in mulch? That’s almost too cute to be true.

“I’m not one hundred percent sure who found the nest, it was during the overnight stocking shift at the Home Depot,” the employee who posted these adorable pictures, Joe, told Bored Panda.

“I believe that the mother picked that spot because it was pretty much pre-made, she just had to dig a little mulch out of the center of the pallet and that was it,” Joe said. “The pallet itself was in a spot that was not disturbed very much and under a roof so it was warm and protected.”

To be sure that nobody disturbs the babies, the employees put up an adorable warning sign

“When the pallet was pulled down the mother ran off, and we assumed she would come back for the babies,” Joe explained. “We mad the sign and roped off the pallet to keep customers out in hope mom would come back to get them.”

The mother, however, wasn’t coming back

“But after 3 days and no return of the mom, I decided to take the babies to the Colorado Division of Wildlife because I didn’t want them to starve.”

And this wasn’t the first time Joe and his colleagues went the extra mile for animals in need. “[Some time ago,] I took a magpie chick home and nursed it back to health and set it free and I believe another co-worker raised some abandon bunnies.”

People had a lot to say about this surprising find

my dad found a nest of baby starlings that he had to take down from work. he brought them home and they just hatched, well my mom loving animals, took care of them. people said that it would be impossible to raise them without any knowledge, well she raised them from birth and had them grow till the time they could leave. we had a guy put a tag on their legs and they flew away. about a year later the birds came back to their home, beautiful experience and one my mom will never forget.
