"Fix it in post" is a phrase uttered by filmmakers who screw up a shot but don't want to undertake the time-consuming process of redoing it and hope that the editor will remove or obscure the mistake in post-production to make it less apparent to the viewer.
Judging from some of the posts on the subreddit r/WellThatSucks, however, it seems that contractors also live by these words. But when their Plan B fails, the consequences are much bigger than a broken suspension of disbelief. Like a hallway that looks like a scene from the Titanic.
Scrolling through this online community, we at Bored Panda noticed many more reasons why homeowners end up getting a feature there, with natural disasters and failing appliances being the most popular ones. So we published a collection of all the misfortunes that caught them off guard. Then another one. And now it's time for the third rendition of things you wouldn't like to find in your house.

Even though there can be many surprises, a hot housing market is often causing buyers to forgo a home inspection prior to purchasing a property, something experts say puts them at risk.
"The housing market has changed since I started my business in 2008, especially in the last two and a half years," said Bruce Jacobs, a registered home inspector who operates Jacobs Property Inspections in Waterloo Region, Canada.
"The inspections I do most often today are those after the home buyer gets the key to the house and they have possession."

Leigh Gate, president of the Ontario Association of Home Inspectors, estimates that only 15 percent of sales in the area include a home inspection.
"If we look at 2019-2020, probably about 85 percent of homes were being inspected during a real estate transaction, and that has really fallen significantly," Gate said.
"And the reason for that is the imbalance in the market."

Long Story Short, I Saw A Cockroach
"It's been a hot market for years. But it's the imbalance that is the issue. And that's supply and demand," Gate highlighted.
"[There are far fewer] homes for sale right now than there is a demand for buyers. So, if you are going into a competitive bidding situation, because in Ontario we typically use the blind bidding system, for someone to stand a chance at buying a home, they would have to go in with their very best purchase price offer and they would have to remove as many conditions as possible."

"And what collections do I have at my home, you ask? A pair of grown man legs hanging from the roof in mint condition. The only pair ever made in this world."
Jacobs said that people shouldn't fully trust a house just because it looks beautiful. It's just the lipstick. What's behind the walls, though?
"You get a used car, it has to be safety inspected and it has to be certified, but you buy a house, it takes nothing," the home inspector said.

"What I find, is now you have people going in with their best financial offer on a house which means quite often, they are exhausting things like a potential repair budget," Gate added.
"I've come in afterward when a client finds out their roof or furnace is shot. These are not small fixes. This is when you get into tens of thousands of dollars in repairs."

Val Brooks, president of the Cambridge Association of Realtors, said some clients tell him that they have tried many times to get a home, but their parents insist that they have to get a home inspection. According to him, buyers want to take their parents' advice but the market is different than when mom and dad bought a house.
Still, Brooks thinks "it is absolutely imperative to have a home inspection."
"It does make it challenging, however, being that we are in a market where there are multiple offers. If you do put a home inspection in an offer, in all likelihood, you will never get it."

"More often, we see pre-listing inspections. I’ve certainly done that with some of my clients, which is to have an inspection done before a house is listed and then make that inspection available for potential buyers. Some people can say that it is weighted in the favour of the seller, however, if you have a viable and respectable inspector, he is not doing it in anybody’s favour. He's doing it on the condition of the house, not in the favour of anyone else."
As a realtor, Brooks said the advice for potential new homeowners is not to have a home inspection.
"I want to advise them to have a home inspection but I’m also going to tell them that if they put in an offer with a home inspection, they will not get the house," Brooks explained.

Gate said that typically with any house that's 15 years or older there are systems that are at the end of their life cycle.
"Roofing and HVAC are the two most common failures after 15 years, but the importance of a home inspection falls to safety and cost. Number one, if there is an electrical issue in an older home or even things like missing stair rails, those can all lead to personal injury," Gate said.
"The second thing is cost ... You exhaust all of your financial resources just trying to buy a house. Mortgage rates are higher, payments are higher, and housing costs are higher. Once you do find a problem in the home, people may not have the budget to fix it or fix it properly."

"It's what you can't see. For example, in an attic, is there condensation, or is it ventilated? In 2008, most inspections were conditional. Everybody saw the main concerns of the house and then the seller, back then, would fix them," Jacobs added.
Jacobs said he loves his profession as a home inspector over his year 40-year career in construction and home renovation, but many of his colleagues have been forced to leave the industry due to declining business.

The Good News, I Narrowly Avoided A House Fire Today. The Bad News, All Of The Outlets In My Basement Are Dead Now
Every one here apparently lives in Carbord houses. Or really needs to check these renovation contractors references. Cheap is not always better. Thank God my husband is a master carpenter.
Moral of the story: stop buying new houses that are slapped together in two months and are made using the cheapest possible materials and have three color options.
Because other options are so affordable…?

Only when they are incorrectly installed. They need to be attached to studs with the correct screws. You can also use a french cleat in certain situations, also attached to the studs. The failures here were not installed correctly.

I can't understand why all these people are falling through their ceilings, so I'm wondering if they're all really dumb, or there's something different about ceilings in other countries? There's no way in hell the crossbeams give out and plunk you in the room below, and no way in hell that the sheetrock DOESN'T give out if you put your weight on them. (*a.k.a., drywall. We had just had new carpet installed in our house, and I had just renovated the downstairs bathroom. We got flooded 2 days later. If it hadn't been a two story house, I wouldn't be here to type this. 8 feet of water in the downstairs. We were rescued off our porch roof.
Moral of the story: Bad things happen, just do the best you can with what you have.
It's a shame how houses are built these days. Houses built before 1080s are better built houses here in the states. Sad.
