You Had Me In The First Half
Something's Wrong Here
When I was in university, I had an acting teacher who drilled into us the importance of “Dukes of Hazzard Turns”. I know all of you pandas out there might not get the reference (don’t worry, I didn’t either at first), so I’ll explain what he meant by that. In the 80s sitcom The Dukes of Hazzard, there were many reckless driving scenes where the characters would take abrupt, sharp turns, so anyone watching could have never anticipated where the driver was heading. What my acting teacher wanted to see from us with “Dukes of Hazzard Turns” was sharp contrasts in our characters.
It’s exciting to watch people quickly change their tactics in pursuing their objectives; audiences eat it right up. So I can’t help but think of that acting professor when viewing the photos from the “Hol’up” subreddit. All of these posts definitely have “Dukes of Hazzard Turns” within them. Some of them are surprisingly wholesome, while others get dark very fast. But as readers, we love these sudden plot twists, and we can’t get enough of them.

True Story
It’s no secret that audiences love plot twists. We see them in films like Get Out, Gone Girl, Parasite, Scream and countless other classics. But what is it about these sudden turns that we can’t get enough of? According to Vera Tobin, a researcher at Case Western Reserve University, movies “exploit our natural tendency to anticipate what’s coming next.” So it can be extremely exciting when our expectations are proven wrong by a shocking plot twist and extremely disappointing when we somehow stumble upon a spoiler.
Tobin explains that we all want to have some idea of what we’re getting ourselves into when we read a book or watch a film, so we’re interested in knowing the genre. But the “curse of knowledge” comes into play when we’re worried about something being spoiled. “You only have one opportunity to learn something for the first time,” Tobin writes. “Once you’ve learned it, that knowledge affects what you notice, what you anticipate – and even the limits of your imagination.”

Drug busts at unsanctioned raves. When a koala gets Chlamydia, they can't just go to the family vet because the wife will see the copay on the credit card bill and ask what's wrong.
Tobin goes on to explain that plot twists can also do a great job of pulling everything together in a story. “A major part of the pleasure of plot twists, too, comes not from the shock of surprise, but from looking back at the early bits of the narrative in light of the twist,” she notes. “The most satisfying surprises get their power from giving us a fresh, better way of making sense of the material that came before. This is another opportunity for stories to turn the curse of knowledge to their advantage. Once we know the answer to a puzzle, its clues can seem more transparent than they really were. When we revisit early parts of the story in light of that knowledge, well-constructed clues take on new, satisfying significance.”

But the joy of being surprised doesn’t only come from plot twists in films and books. As this list makes very clear, we can have “Hol’up” moments in our daily lives at any moment, and our brains still love them, even when they’re not scripted. “It’s a strong neuro alert that tells us that something is important about this moment and we have to pay attention,” Tania Luna, the co-author of Surprise: Embrace the Unpredictable and Engineer the Unexpected, told The Takeaway, explaining the “surprise sequence”. “Our cognitive resources are basically hijacked and pulled into the moment. That’s one of the things that’s really uncomfortable for some people, but also exciting for some people because your attention is completely in the moment.”

Modern Problems Require Mordern Solution
And if you’re a person who considers a surprise party to be your worst nightmare, Luna says that it’s possible to become more open to the idea over time. “I think about surprise in two perspectives: Embracing it and engineering it,” she told The Takeaway. “You have to train your brain to be more comfortable accepting surprise, and by that I also mean surprise readiness—being comfortable with uncertainty, ambiguity and change. Especially these days, that’s an incredibly important skill.”

Uh
Even though she’s an expert on surprise now, Luna admits that she wasn’t always a fan. “I hated being surprised—I loved surprising others, but I hated being surprised myself,” she told The Takeaway. “[I hated] the feeling of loss of control and the feeling of vulnerability. As a kid, I had experienced a lot of change and my coping mechanism was to say, ‘I’m in charge. I control everything. Nobody controls me and I can control the world around me.’ I was protecting myself from negative surprises. But what I’ve learned is that I was also keeping out joy, wonder, and emotional intensity.”

I remember asking a question about this to the priest when I was in catechism. It didn't go well. I was put into an empty room to "pray and ask for forgiveness". I came out of that room an atheist. I was 11.
Asked my R.E. teacher at school this one and he said God made it okay for Eve to breed with her own Kids so it wasn't incest and also made it so the babies didn't turn out Mutated. Asked "when did God change his mind on that?" and he said "it's in the Bible" which I'm pretty sure it isn't - true story :D
My racist MIL said something racist so I (an atheist) asked her why she doesn't love all people since we are all related to Adam and Eve according to the Bible, I thought her head was going to explode. She never spoke about religion with me again.
I think the implication is that Adam lived to be 900+ years old (think about THAT all you need) so he and Eve probably had hundreds of kids. Only three of which were named in their relatively short section of the book of genesis. Either way, lots of glorious incest going on.
Someone once said to me (when I brought it up), "just because they were the first, doesn't mean they were the only ones God made." I thought it was a good point.
Load More Replies...When I was in HS in the early 80's and asked my Rabbi this, his answer was they had daughters the bible doesn't talk about. The fact that they did have daughters that the bible doesn't talk about doesn't make this less weird... trust me on that
they had daugters and the Bible DOES actually talk about it (it says they had sons and daughters) so hopefully that makes it better
Load More Replies...Adam and Eve didn't just have three sons. "The days of Adam after he fathered Seth were 800 years; and he had other sons and daughters. Thus all the days that Adam lived were 930 years, and he died." -Genesis 5:4-5
uh yeah but they all still came from the same first source, so what's your point?
Load More Replies...well, this actually would explain a lot..... if it were not complete bullsh!t.
I told my very religious bible thumper aunt that according to the Bible we are all a product of incest. She went to my Mom and told on me. LMAO
Presumably some mum/son stuff and dad/daughter stuff. After that a lot of brother/sister stuff. After a while there's uncle's and aunts as well.
Load More Replies...What about Lilith? She refused to submit to Adam and was thrown out/fled the Paradise for her independence. Bible stories are like Aesop's Fables with punitive damage.
THE GIRL WHO GIVES CONTEXT HAS ARRIVED. It’s confirmed that the sons had other wives whom were not Eve, because Adam and Eve are a, say it with me, METAPHOR, like 98 percent of the Bible.
"and why are tax-exempt instutions allowed to control womens bodies and go to war?" "Because metaphors".
Load More Replies...Yeah…when I was little and was first told about that that’s exactly what I was thinking. Temple was a little awkward after that when talking about the beginning of the torah.
but one of their sons was sent away and he found a wife elsewhere so technically we didn't all come from them.
Nah, you're thinking of Isaac; Abraham's son. Adam and Eve did have multiple sons and daughters, so presumably...
Load More Replies...Back when I was a Christian this bothered me on so many levels.... along with a whole host of other things driving me out of that cult...um, religion for good!!!
as a kid I kept getting hung up on the idea of how the sloths and kangaroos crawled and hopped - both ways I might add - getting to the Middle East to see Noah
Load More Replies...Actually read Genesis. OK, the first siblings must've... ok... let's not read too much about that... but plainly Cain, Able and Seth weren't the only humans; Genesis quite plainly mentioned Cain going off to live among other peoples. Genesis also said Adam and Eve lived for hundreds of years, so Cain and these others could have been many generations removed.
Why would this be downvoted? It's true. The Roman Catholic church has conceded that evolution is true, but maintain it was started by their god. Too many protestants in the USA hold onto the complete truth of the bible: their god created the universe, the earth is 6000 to 10000 years old, about 4000 yeras ago there was a world wide flood only survived by 8 people who repopulated the world in about two hundred years, and more.
Load More Replies...So you are saying that you don’t buy into it because it would mean Eve‘s sons impregnated her. The same guys banging their sister to sire the human race would make it fine? Just checking
I asked this to my 3rd grade religion teacher, and he invented a sister. Didn't make it any better.
They had daughters too but like the rest of history the girls got written out. Not sure why men are so intimidated by women, but there you go, 😎
Let’s not forget that the population was again reduced to a single family during the 40-day/night flood and all that…
so you are saying unlike the water, the incestuous banging did not dry up after the flood?
Load More Replies...Did everyone forget about Noah and the flood? Adam was his ancestor. However according to the biblical story, Noah is the most recent common ancestor….
The Noah story? The story of Gilgamesh is the same story but earlier (2700 bc) If you don't have your own heros steal one
Load More Replies...Agam and Eve were created first. Doesn't mean others were not created after.
And several daughters, the bible only mentions the first 3 sons names. Genesis 5:4 "And the days of Adam after he begot Seth were eight hundred years, and he begot sons and daughters." so there were many kids. Remember Cain and Able were the first 2, Seth was the 3rd son, and then none of the other children are named. Still incest, but they had more than just 3 sons
I'm Catholic, but I'm also not Bible-blind. For a book that was handed down through word of mouth for generations before it was finally written down, I take it for the lessons that it teaches, just like reading Aesop's Fables. Some stories handed down may be true, but some had to be exaggerated.
I mean teeechnically, according to Rabbinic tradition, and especially "The Alphabet of Ben-Sira", there was also Adam's first wife, Lilith, who was made from the same clay as Adam (Genesis, 1:27) but banished (or in some versions runs away herself) from the Garden of Eden for being too independent and not obeying him, at which point God made Eve out of Adam's rib in order to be subservient (Genesis 2:22)... Meanwhile Lilith is turned into a demon by God and according to Medieval Christian tradition she is Queen of Hell, a child-killing witch (she gets blamed for what we now know as SIDS, "Sudden Infant Death Syndrome") as well as the incarnation of lust, causing men to be led astray.
Yeah, and they married girls from the town down the roaaaaaaaaad..... Wait....
And that is one of the more realistic aspects of that particular book of fiction.
I wonder why eve was feeling rebellious/annoyed enough to eat the apple
WHAT THEY JUST DIDNT MENTION THE DAUGHTERS ITS FACT IN ALL THE GENEOLOGIES OF THE BIBLE THERES NO WOMEN BROS TAKIN THIS SOO OUT OF CONTEXT
Adam and Eve lived in the garden with their sons and everyone else lived in Nod.
I’ve thought about this for, many years. One of the reasons I’m an atheist
Correct me if I am wrong but didn't God destroy the world by a flood and the only people to survive was Noah and his family?
So, according to the bible, we are all "one big family"... SO ALL PEOPLE DESCEND FROM THESE TWO. Well great! Then there really is only one race after all 🤗 not different ones, as some (mainly white) like to point out. It's also quite irritating in this context, that most of these people also call themselves "good christians"... because "they know their bible"🤔🤣😂
Genesis 5:4 "And after Seth was born, Adam lived 800 years and had other sons and daughters." It helps to read the whole story.
I wonder how long the boys stop doing themselves, before realizing dad can’t produce, so decided to do eve?… dang I still can’t make it make sense.
This is wrong, I don't think anything is said of the third son, while Cain went to the land of Nod and begat the rest of us from the locals, who seem to have had nothing to do with God and to have been there all along, living their best lives? Because the bible is a fairy-story!
Maybe they only mentioned the sons as Eve just 'pandora's boxed' her gender?
I think they were relating the Jewish story as the bible does mention that others did exist. If not we have a problem.
The Bible states that Adam and Eve had other sons and daughters. Yes, brothers and sisters married until God forbade it. Inbreeding wasn't a problem that close to creation. They lived for many hundreds of years, and Adam was 930 when he died. I feel for Eve, imagine how many children she gave birth to.
Ha! I got asked not to return to Sunday school for asking about this LOL!!!
I knew that LGBTQ people were with us from Day One! Accept them, they had a place in the Garden of Eden, too! What'ya talking about? Incest? Get real! Pfft!
(Disclaimer: this does not reflect any thoughts of any kind about any one. It's just a joke. Just thought I'd make this clear in case someone decides 2+3 makes 18)
Load More Replies...And when one of the sons went off to the land of Nod and found a wife. Homo Erectus?
After Cain slew Abel, Cain was sent away to find a wife. If Adam and Eve were the first, where did Cain's wife come from; where did he go to find her?
I made the mistake of looking this up it seams very confusing and gross
Load More Replies...FYI, there were several daughters and I think several more sons too. We just only hear about the two main ones. And I don’t know much about biology, but I’m pretty sure the health problems from incest occur after many generations of severe inbreeding, where whatever gene problems the first parents had just get multiplied constantly.
If you check out the extra apocrypha with the books of Adam you get a whole better story of basically what happened after they got booted from Eden. Pretty much Adam got stroppy about how life was hard now (Eve got on with things) and kept chucking himself off cliffs and stuff. God would bring him back Groundhog Day style telling him like "no dude you don't get to get out of it like that this is consequences". Satan kept getting in Adam and Eve's ears on and off, angels would randomly show up to chat, and then they had 2 sets of twins (boys and girls) that were to marry each other. It is wild
And Cain killed Abel, so only two were available for breeding. That said Cain's response to being marked as a murderer is 'other men will kill me'. If they were the only people who are these other men? His father and yet unborn (or very young) little brother? Did he misgender mum and sisters? Or perhaps after figuring out the prototype with Adam and Eve, God made a bunch more and just didn't feel the need to tell us about it. NOTE: There's also the school of thought that Adam was supposed to be immortal and a companion for God, but he needed someone like himself, therefore God made Eve. Both would have been immortal and not needed to reproduce if they hadn't sinned. Once they sinned they couldn't stay in the place where they would never age and die, so they needed to have children. Once they would reproduce and die, there needed to be other people for them to interact with.
And then there was the Flood, which reduced the population down to Noah, his wife, his three sons and their families. And the sons with their families all moved to three different countries. Bonus point in that the US South has used this story to give a religious reason for slavery.
That's because either Ham or Japeth saw his father drunk and naked and went and told his brothers rather than keeping it to himself. So as punishment for disrespecting Daddy, blabbermouth was curse to be a poor manual labourer, thus a slave. Then there's good old Abraham, whose wife having him rape her maidservant because she couldn't have kids led to all of the bad blood between Israel and Palestine. And then his grandsons are the reason that Jews and Muslims hate each other. Christian fundamentalists are fun.
Load More Replies...Oh, this question was asked on a few occasions in catechism class, but the nuns shut that right down.
I knew that's what it says; why have I only now realised how ridiculous it is? (I'm not a believer but even fairy tales tend to make sense!)
The important question, though. If Evolution is true, we all kinda came from the same place too, right? Apes don't only mate from different families.
Evolution is true. There are mountains of evidence for evolution. The great apes and humans share a common (extinct) ancestor. We humans are apes too.

Load More Replies...The element of surprise is a very important ingredient in comedy, and many of the people who were part of these conversations shared on Reddit had excellent comedic timing. From coming up with perfect comebacks to wording things in just the right way, these surprising posts went from mundane to hilarious in the blink of an eye. As comedian Dean Lewis explains in his article ‘The Anatomy of a Joke’, “A comedic surprise is a twist without serious repercussions.”

Sick Beat
Everyone probably already knows this, but the reason drummers were included in battalions was for morale, coordination on the battlefield, and signaling to soldiers when to reload and fire, which you might think sounds ridiculous, but back then armies worked in line formations, and muskets were slow-firing weapons, so to maximize firing, one line would open fire while the back line reloads, then the front line would kneel to reload giving the back line chance to fire, and repeat.
