The most common was a linthothorax (dense layers of linen that was effective enough to be useful). the rich would have a curias of bronze (muscled or bell-type.) I think this is an artist's idea of the Slaughter of the Innocents, when King Herod, hearing that a new king had been born (Jesus), sent soldiers to Bethlehem to kill all male children aged birth to two just be sure the new king was dead.
