We dont have BHM in Australia but the curriculum has changed significantly since I was a kid at school. They now learn about Aboriginal heroes and freedom fighters. My favourite historical figures would be a toss up between Pemulway, Truganini or Windarine
And really, isn't EVERY month Aboriginal/African/marginalized people's month? They've been shaping our world the whole time, too!
Wilma Rudolph: Olympic medal winning track athlete who, as a childhood polio survivor, had been told she would never walk again.
Bass reeves the original lone ranger
One of my favorite "Wild West" figures! Former slave who became a US Marshal. Three thousand arrests, many in Oklahoma (where white men feared to tread). Absolute bad*ss.
Bessie Coleman became a beautician and learned french all to put herself through aviation school in France to become one of the best aviatrixes
Ola Hudson. She was an American fashion designer and costumier. She designed costumes for several famous musicians, including the Pointer Sisters, Diana Ross, Janet Jackson, David Bowie, John Lennon and Ringo Starr. She is the mother of Saul Hudson, known professionally as Slash, of Guns N' Roses
Angela Davis...
Sorry, I forgot to add : ... and her slaves owner ancestors.
Alice Ball
She was a chemist who very early in her career pioneered a treatment for Hansen's Disease, known also as leprosy, which became known as the 'Ball Method. ' She was an African-American and made a technique that used a water-soluble form of chaulmoogra oil to treat leprosy.
Robert Smalls. We need a movie about him. Stole a confederate ship took it north and became a senator
Bars Fight
August, twas the twenty-fifth,
Seventeen houndred forty-six,
The Indians did in ambush lay,
Some very valiant men to slay
Twas nigh unto Sam Dickinson's mill,
The Indians there five men did kill.
The names of whom I'll not leave out,
Samuel Allen like a hero foute,
And though he was so brave and bold,
His face no more shall we behold.
Eleazer Hawks was killed outright,
Before he had time to fight,
Before he did the Indians see,
Was shot and killed immediately.
Oliver Amsden he was slain,
Which caused his friends much grief pain.
Simeon Amsden they found dead
Not many rods from Oliver's head.
Adonijah Gillett, we do hear,
Did lose his life which was so dear.
John Sadler fled across the water,
And thus escaped the dreadful slaughter.
Eunice Allen see the Indians comeing
And hoped to save herself by running:
And had not her petticoats stopt her,
The awful creatures had not cotched her,
Not tommyhawked her on the head,
And left her on the ground for dead.
Young Samuel Allen, Oh! lack-a-day!
Was taken and carried to Canada.

First known poem written by a Black American!
Helen Lacks - without knowledge of what her doctor did back in the 1940s, her cancer cells were harvested and are still used today for any and almost all medical cellular and cancer experiments.
