I've just moved to a new home with much more square footage. I'd like to add some nice-looking artwork while still being able to pay the mortgage!

Dollar store
Antique shop
Vintage or thrift stores
Print images you like and frame them
If you have a t-shirt with a cool print then cut it out and stretch over canvas
When you're at a friends house, if you see something you like just take it

Yes thrift stores are a good bet, but honestly still overpriced a lot of times. You know what your style is and what you want, make it. if you like articulate paintings or photographs that you don't have the skill to create yourself, find a good one and order a poster print, and frame it in something nice that goes with your scenery. You'd be surprised though how many things you can make that you like for very little money.
