J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Silmarillion. I don’t really know why. Since it covers thousands of years and hundreds of characters there’s no real character development to speak of. It’s tough to read without constantly referring to the index to remember who uttered what horrible oath, and which thick-headed son of Finwë or Fingolfin or Finarfin is going to fulfill that oath to the detriment or doom of his family and kingdom. Or which elvish maiden is fair with golden tresses, or fair with dark tresses and dark eyes, or dark tresses and blue eyes, and which son of Bëor or Haleth or Hador is going to bring doom upon all of Beleriand when seeking her hand. Bonus: many characters have many names, used depending on who is addressing them, or changed when they accomplished a great deed, or committed a great crime!

But I still it find it endlessly compelling and have read it several times, sometimes just reading a favorite section (Of Beren and Luthien!) or two.
