I have some feelings on this topic so don't be surprised if I reply to your addition with vehement disagreement.

OMG OMG OMG Ok so I am a HUGE nerd and listen to a lot of video game music. But the stardew valley sound track is AMAZING! As well as any of Liana Flores's music!

Metallica is overrated, the rest of the big 4 is just as good, they only have less fans.

Pop music from the 1980s to the mid/late 2010s is wildly underrated. I've heard a lot of people hating it, and it's my favourite type of music. Not sure if it's a specific genre that was popular around then, but the majority of their music is so damn fun. A good part of it is dance music I think.

I don't think any music is overrated tbh. I'm not fond of current pop but I can see why others like it. If I had to, I'd say classical. I've never really been compelled by it and idk why it was so popular for so long

Can we be friends man? Omg, you are the first person I've ever heard to also love music from that era! Literally the best era of music is 80s to like 2015. So many good songs.

Just get on my soapbox here, but....
The most underrated music movement over the last decade is the rise of Japanese all girl punk/ alt rock/ heavy rock/ metal bands.... Don't know if it's because they don't sing in english, cause they're girls or just written off as some kind of gimmick but there are so many amazingly talented groups that are just unknown in the west.... So much talent that leaves so many western bands in the dust.... I mean, fk, BANDMAID, for one, are just one of the most awesome heavy rock bands on the planet.....and that's just one!! I won't bore people with a full list, as much as I'd like to, but so many awesome talented bands, just seem to be ignored cause they're not western...... ( might add a playlist in the comments later , if anyone cares...)

Weird band name ik but I honestly love Rainbow Kitten Surprise. I started listening to them after my friend showed them to me and honestly got kinda addicted. Same with One Republic tho. I love them so much and I know they kinda came back into the spotlight after Top Gun Maverick but I've loved their music since I can remember.

Hardly anyone my age likes The Strokes, Cage the Elephant, The Killers, RHCP, or Pearl Jam. Closest popular thing people my age like is Nirvana. Throughout my childhood, my parents listened to these bands all the time, (and it meant they weren't mad at me or going to hurt me) so it kinda became a comfort when I later began to really appreciate music.

Also, orchestral music (commonly called classical, but I've heard that refers to a time period of music rather than genre) other than the overplayed stuff from Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, etc. The good stuff proves it's not all a snoozefest. My favorites are often modern compositions from Japan, like Ghibli soundtracks and whatever Michiru Oshima's got going on.
