So, my kid's birthday is just around the corner, and we're thinking of getting him a car.

He's all set to get his driver's license and knows how to handle a car.

But here's the thing: my wife is all gung-ho about buying a brand-new car for him. Me? Well, I'm more on the side of getting him a used one. I mean, come on, it's his first car, right?

I still remember my own early driving days, starting off with my grandpa's old Ford from his farming days. That thing was tough as nails, and he didn't mind if I gave it a few minor bumps.

So, what do you think about all this? I'd love to hear your opinion.

My first (and so far only) car is a little hatchback that I bought brand new, but that was because I didn't get my license until I was over 25 and I bought it to learn in. Because I hadn't had to pay petrol, rego, service costs until then, I had enough in savings to buy it outright. My brother on the other hand got his license almost as soon as he turned 18 (he failed three times I think first) and it just happened to be around the time that my mum was thinking about getting a new car. So he bought her old car (for about $2000 I think) and she bought a new one. Unfortunately what they say about buying from family is possibly true because it didn't last more than two years I think, but it was good enough for him at the time and he then bought another used car which he has had for about 10 years now! Incidentally, my sister is getting (hopefully) her license this year and the 'new' car my mum bought when she sold to my brother is now her old car and my sister is buying it for about the same amount! At least she is going in with her eyes open, it's not a great car but it will do for her needs at the moment. Anyway, don't know if any of that's helpful :) I think a used car is probably sensible for someone who is only just getting used to driving on their own and is fairly young, save the new car until they have more confidence. I still have a large scratch along the side of my car from scraping against my letterbox not long after I got my probationary license!
