Tell the story of how you met your best friend!

This random girl came up to me in 3rd grade and she liked my red hair so she asked if I wanted to be friends. I was a little 3rd grader that was not in the mood. I had this random person obsessed with me trying to follow me around so I attempted to trade her for a Pokémon card. Spoiler alert it didn’t work and 10 years later we dated and broke up but we still are the best of friends! We still joke about it to this day.

Circa 1990, I was the high school nerd, a loner, totally into my Commodore 64, comic books and video games. He was a jock, the center on the basketball team, and in the popular crowd. He had gotten into some serious trouble with some friends, which lead to some hard discipline at home. Out of the blue, his mom told him he should try to be friends with me because I was quiet and never got into trouble. She didn’t really even know me, so I don’t know why she suggested that we be friends — but what followed was like one of those crazy 80’s comedies where the jock and nerd become best friends. We didn’t have a lot in common on the surface, but somehow it just worked. We were inseparable during our Junior and Senior years of high school. He pulled me out of my shell, I kept his life interesting, and we both pushed each other to be better. Many years later, when we were adults, I confessed to him that I had been suicidal when we first became friends, and had attempted to end it a couple of times but had luckily backed out. I was so lonely, I had no friends. I hated my life. His mom literally saved my life when she told him we should be friends. Nowadays we don’t see each other as often as we would like, as we live in separate states, but when we do it’s like we were never apart. My kids call him Uncle, and our wives love hanging out with each other. We still pull the best out of each other.

My best friend and I met at the daycare we went to when we were really young. We were two when we were able to understand that we were friends. My mom recently told me that someone in our class took her shoe and threw it and she was crying so I have her the shoe and played with her every day for the rest of the year. 12 years later, we’re still best friends.

She’s not my best friend anymore, I haven’t seen her in a long time, but I met my best friend (from 4th grade - 6th grade) one day when I was at church. We weren’t supposed to be talking, but she kept whispering things to me about Disney movies, I had no idea who she was, I had never seen her before. And then one week later I saw her again and we engaged in a conversation. And then just like that, we were best friends for a few years

First day of sophomore year I walked into the cafeteria for lunch. I only had one friend and they weren’t in that lunch, and there were no empty tables. I saw a kid that I thought my one friend knew and asked if I could sit there for the day. 6 years later we still talk every single day.

My husband is my best friend. We met in a youth group and went to school together (when we were 12). We dated in high school, remained friends, but lost touch when he joined the Marine Corps after graduation (I did stay in touch with his family). We found each other again through a mutual friend’s Facebook account in 2009, married in 2011 and I couldn’t imagine life without him. This year marks the 30th year of friendship!
