Old days. Girls’ bedroom is painted pink. Boys’ bedroom was painted an interesting color. Girls were supposed to help out in the house. Boys were allowed to go out and do boy stuff. Girls got dolls and other girly presents. Boys got things like matchbox cars. Boys got to drive the tractor. Boys got hired by neighbors to work hay. Boys got to earn money, but not us girls. I thought being a girl was the worst thing to happen to anyone and I was so angry about it. One day my mother gave out gifts. My little sisters got jewelry boxes. My brothers got really neat pocket knives. I dreaded finding out what I was going to get. I was sure it was going to be something only some sissy girl would want. My mother gave everyone else their gift before me. Guess what I got?? A neato pocket knife just like my brothers! I was happier than I could ever remember ever being before. That was the first time ever that I thought my mother understood me!
