During my trip to Ireland, my family and I rented an apartment for the week. Due to limited space in the bedroom, I ended up sleeping in the living room. One night, as I struggled to sleep, I noticed the silhouette of a man outside. He even knocked on the window, which startled me. Quickly, I rushed to wake up my relatives who were in the bedroom. Together, we cautiously looked through the peephole on the door to the apartment-style building's hallway. To our surprise, the man was right outside our door, knocking persistently. With our hearts racing, we were unsure of how to react. Eventually, the man left, and we decided to block the door with something before attempting to sleep again. The following morning, we discovered that the man had been a bit tipsy, searching for his apartment keys which he had left on a table near the entrance. Even though it turned out to not likely to cause harm situation, the experience was still unnerving, especially for someone like me who enjoys watching horror movies and shows.
Man here. Walking home from a night out. Was getting followed by a couple of guys. Decided to try and get to some traffic and populated area. They cut me off and I tried to get down a back lane back into the town. Another two lads show up and stop me. Ask for money and watch. Before I could even answer or give them the money or watch two of them pin me to the wall and one on the right pulled a knife on me. Never been so scared in my life. They were laughing and saying it’s ok, they are going to kill me, just cut me up a little. Taxi drives past and They leave go, I just sprint like hell toward the town. Was shouting for help. They chased after me and one managed to push me off balance. They jumped on me and started kicking me. Another taxi stopped and jumped out. They ran off. I’ve never been more ashamed, vulnerable, scarred or angry.
Years ago, my husband and kid’s traveled with me to Tamarindo, Costa Rica. It’s a pretty safe country and I wanted to show them how beautiful it was. We went out to dinner and parked in, what we thought was, a safe cul de sac with other dinner patrons. We we got back to our car we noticed a group of men surrounding the cars. They asked for money and blocked our way. We had to pay them to allow us back in our rental car. My husband pushed past and we followed like ducks. We got in the car and the first thing my husband does is put down the windows. I spotted one of the men holding a molotov cocktail and was swinging back to hit us in the car. I was yelling at my husband to GO! He just sat there and said ‘he won’t throw it’, almost egging him on. My kids started crying and begging their dad to GO! I tried to get the windows up but the passenger side was locked. I just stuck my arm out the window, held out my hand to the man and said ‘No. Ninos’ (children). My Spanish was bad but I was trying to tell him I didn’t want him to hurt my kids. He literally froze like a statue with the bottle in mid-swing. My husband finally decided to leave and as slowly as he could. My kids cried all the way back to the condo and my husband kept saying he wasn’t going to throw it. The next morning we go to breakfast and park close to close to where we were the night before. The area was scorched and there were police guarding the area. Yup! He threw it. I’m still ashamed and terrified thinking about that situation. I taught my kids, at the time, two things- That’s it’s ok to get into a car with a drunk driver (it’s NEVER ok) and if someone attempts to seriously hurt you, remind them you have a family. My kids are grown adults now and they STILL angrily bring up the night their dad almost got us killed.
I was driving up an on ramp at night in Las Vegas going to pick up my sister at the airport in the 80s. It was the on ramp that headed south from Sahara blvd. As I drove up there was a man who popped out of the triangle part on my left did a somersault right in front of my car and I ran over his leg. I was driving a VW bug at the time. I slowly pulled over to see if he was ok and luckily I had pulled up a little ways. Well, he was charging real fast at me. I figured he was ok if he can run. So I took off fast. Any closer he would have been right there. I’m sure it was a rouse. It was scary.
My missionary parents, my younger sister and I were on our way back to the states for our one year break, after four years in Singapore. We had planned to visit Angkor Wat on the way. After seeing the fabulous ruins, we were headed back to Phnom Penn from Siemreab on an older DC Plane. The piglet did what seemed to be a touch and go maneuver and went around again. The flight attendants then had everyone who could, move from the front of the plane to the back. Then attempted the landing again. (We didn't have to move, missionarys cheap seats usually in back part of planes) As the plane hit the runway, the pilot kept the front of the plane of off the tarmac for as long as possible. When the nose wheel hit, the plane veered sharply to the right. As it came to a stop, the engines were off and as I turned to look outside,(I had the window seat) the rubber escape ramps were already out with staff at the bottom. We did not get to used the rubber ramps. Long skid marks but we were safe.
