Last night, I was hit with severely debilitating pain in my right flank. It was so agonizing that I couldn’t even form words. My mother heard me scream from upstairs and she told me she would take me to the emergency room. After waiting in there for an hour or two, I was visited by a resident, a student, and an MD doctor, who asked me several questions and gave me a quick physical exam. They concluded that the diagnosis was “flank pain with uncertain cause”. My mother told them it might have been something appendix-related, but I told her it was around my kidney area (I’m taking A&P, so…). Personally, I think it might’ve been a muscle spasm, because it felt like I twisted something in there (imagine a charley horse but in your back area). The doctor said in case it was a kidney-related thing, I would have to stay hydrated and have a follow up with my primary physician in 3 days. I just wanted to know, what other things might cause pain in the right flank?
