As an ESL instructor, I don't expect my students to have perfect English. So when I got the email below, I knew INSTANTLY it was from ChatGPT. Since the course I'm teaching is non-credit, it's not a big deal for me, but I DID tell the student that a shorter, simpler email that HE WROTE HIMSELF was preferable!

I hope this email finds you well. I am writing to inform you that I will not be able to attend class tomorrow, July 6th, as I have an important matter that requires my presence elsewhere.

I apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and I kindly request your permission to take a one-day leave of absence. I assure you that I will make every effort to catch up on any missed assignments or class material upon my return.

If there are any specific instructions or materials I should be aware of during my absence, please let me know, and I will ensure to follow up accordingly.

Thank you very much for your understanding and support.

Best regards,

Chat GFP is an avanced A.I. (artificial intelligence) that is revolutionizing a number of industries - but especially computer programming and writing. There are good and bad sides to this - and advocates and doomsayers - but I wanted to hear a balanced perspective from people who are already using it at work. <3

In English class, we are now required to do everything on paper in class in front of the teacher. Any work done at home will not be counted, because they will assume you used ChatGPT. You have maybe a week of work days, so 5 hours split up, to get your plan, research, draft, editing, and final draft done. If you are absent, then oh well you just have to work faster. All the while the rest of the class is chatting with each other and the teacher. I've never been able to work like this. In the past, I spend those 5 days writing my draft. Once I get home the day before it's due, I spend 7 hours at the computer rearranging and rereading my writing to make sure it flows correctly, and making sure my evidence makes sense. Since I could not do that this year, I felt ashamed with everything I turned in. I've always been slow with my writing, so I don't have time to check over what I wrote, and even had to turn my rough draft in as my final. Then once you account for the days I was gone for doctors appointments and sports, I had maybe half as much time as everyone else. There was one time I had a breakdown in the middle of class because of it, causing me to have to go to the bathroom, so I had even less time. From what I could tell, I wasn't the only one struggling with this system. Each essay was around 10% of our final grade. Most people who I knew were working the entire class were asking for more time, but because of the policy, the teacher was not allowed to give it to them. And since we were upperclassmen, there was a no late work policy. You turn it in as it is or you get a zero. It's a miracle I actually passed that class.

    Sorry for ranting a bit.

I'm sorry about this!! I hear about the OTHER side - my son and his wife are university professors who now have to try to grade work that may or may NOT be the work of the actual student! On top of Chat GPT, there are many websites where you can pay someone to write your essays for you - and, since these are original work - will not be caught by the Turn It In software. It's VERY frustrating for them. They have said that their only alternative now is to demand that everything be written on paper in class, in front of them, with no phones or laptops allowed. But, of course, this punishes the GOOD students (like YOU) along with the BAD ...
