A cemetery is the last place on earth one can expect to find an air conditioner system, but not in Manila! Here, the Chinese Cemetery is a true City of the Dead! There are streets which trail along spacious houses that have their own kitchens, bedrooms and bathrooms, near the tombs of the dead.
In Manila, Philippines, The Chinese Cemetery is definitely not the regular type of cemetery and it’s nickname says it all: Beverley Hills of the Dead.
The cemetery is more of a neighborhood, where the living come to live couple of days per year near their dead relatives. In most cases, the houses of the dead are bigger and more luxurious than the ones of the living. This is why some families choose to live with their departed relatives in these eerie houses.
As you walk on the streets of this cemetery, you will see TV antennas and hear toilets being flushed. The cemetery, which is more a suburbia, is divided into wealthy and poor areas.
The place was built when the Chinese community of Manila was prohibited to bury their dead in the Spanish Catholic cemeteries. Rich Chinese families of traders, built impressive mansions for their dead, up to three stories high, in order to ensure their deceased have the same level of comfort they had when they were alive. The trend caught on quickly and nowadays there are people who were born in the cemetery.
