My name is Yoav Tirosh and I'm a saga scholar (I have a Ph.D. and everything), and some point while I was on exchange in Denmark I got really bored and started making comics. Since then my style has improved (thanks to my wife's help and my trusty iPad), but the crossed-out horned helmets remain!

Hope you like these! If you do, please consider following me on my socials!

This one was made before AC: Valhalla was released and it got a LOT of hate on Reddit.

Asking about his wife and kids was just cleverly disguised reconnaissance on the movement of people in and around his house.

This one was made with my wife, who is an amazing talent. She really thinks out of the box when drawing and I think the results are astonishing.

Too bad the old man doesn't speak English. He sees this strange whipper-snapper waving strange, illegible runes around and runs him through to protect the family from evil spells. The daughter runs out screaming, realises she's never seen the dead man before, shrugs, and goes back inside. Old man gets to keep the pink helmet!

Everyone knows monks' skulls have the best percussive qualities. It's because of, um, resonance.

Remember

Remember

Admittedly, the values that Hallfreðr (random name) fought for weren't all that heroic, but I do like the thought of how little we remember of the past, and how much we project on it. Ironically, as many know, Bluetooth technology is named after Haraldr Blátönn (Harald Bluetooth), who was the commissioner of the very famous Jelling Stone in Denmark.

Well, Hallfreðr's blood did fertilise the soil and help all those lovely flowers to grow. So that's nice.

Technically, 'alien' simply means a person or thing from a very different place or society, so yes.

The looks on my students' faces when I explain that English months are named after Roman gods but the days of the week are named after Norse gods. Because English is weird. Every year!

At least work went well in the dream. It'd really suck to dream about having a leaky ship, trying to pillage a place that had nothing worth pillaging, pulling a muscle while swinging a sword, Bjorn's socks stinking up the camp.

The Vikings are one of the most interesting examples of history being written by the writers, who were not necessarily the victors (though they were usually the same). Another example is the Peloponnesian War, in which the Spartans won but most of the written history that survives was recorded by Athenians, primarily Thucydides.

Execution

Execution

This is one of my earliest earliest comics here which I really like. Before making white faces and then faces with color, I tried to just not do face color at all and leave it blank. The main issue is that while sometimes in worked (like I think it does here), sometimes it looked terrible. But it was a nice period!

But if they kill you first, then there's no chance that Alduin will fly down and attack the town, letting you escape in the chaos!

Long Commute

Long Commute

You can tell that this is one of my earlier comics; the main "tell" is that I didn't use any skin color. But eventually I realized that having the characters white skinned is just as a political statement as having them with color, so these days I just try to diversify gender and skin color as much as possible, much to the anger of Reddit.

I'm trying to decide if the person in the third panel has made camp in a field of fallen enemies and just gone to sleep among the corpses or if that person is clinging to the wreckage of a sunken ship and is taking a nap in the storm. Such a peaceful expression!

Viking Pick Up Line

Viking Pick Up Line

A good friend of mine (Luke John Murphy) has a co-authored piece analysing the viability of Blood Eagles and if the Vikings could have actually pulled such a procedure off, let alone keeping the victim alive. Final conclusion: It's complicated.

Why Are There No Trees In Iceland?

Why Are There No Trees In Iceland?

Actually there are no trees because of a mix of climate and manmade forest clearing. But here and there in the sagas you hear about Vikings who burn down forests out of spite. To this day, when I do the Golden Circle with Icelanders, they complain about the trees blocking the view. Some people just don't like trees.

Blind

This comic was partially drawn and written by my wife. Blindness in the sagas is a fascinating topic; if you're interested in disability in the sagas and blindness in particular you should check out the work done by Christopher Crocker and the extensive bibliography on his personal website (https://cwecrocker.com).

I find it fascinating how often harpists were blind and blind people were harpists. Tjeniaa, Homer, John Parry, Ukrainian kobzars, Turlough O'Carolan, real people and archetypes.

So everybody is a villain? Because I think being a villain is just causing pain and suffering. Surprisingly, I'm calm while writing this.
