Europeans Call Out 50 “Hard Truths” That They Think Americans Are Not Yet Ready To Hear
Americans and Europeans share many things, including a commitment to fundamental democratic principles, a strategic military alliance, and some of the highest living standards in the world. However, there still are some notable differences between the two sides of the Atlantic.
And one Reddit discussion draws attention to many of them in quite a funny way. Started by a person who goes on the platform by the nickname Mamutu7, it asked: "Europeans, what is something us Americans aren't ready to hear?" Immediately, people from the Old Continent started replying, and it became a lighthearted roast pretty quickly.

The European description for "Karen" is "American".
You love your army way too much, yet many veterans are left alone with ptsd after their service.
Bud Light is not even close of being a beer.
Your country is slowly evolving backwards atm (uprising racism, women don't have choice over their own body in way too many states, too much christianity b******t in politics)
EDIT: angry comments just show that you are indeed not ready to hear those things.
Tipping is stupid. Just pay your staff a proper living wage!
Excuse the pun, but it seen we’re at a tipping point with tipping culture. Besides people making an average wage expecting tips for just doing their jobs, and restaurants asking for 20-25-30% tips, it’s really shone a spotlight on how stupid tipping culture is.
You actually have less freedom than most of the world. Your country is a pay to play.
It's neither normal nor okay to have to go bankrupt just to go to school or going to the hospital
Buuuuut guuuuys, how else is the medical insurance industry supposed to make their billions in profit??? 👉👈🥺
Having school children recite the Pledge of Allegiance is creepy AF.
- Going to a hospital, calling an ambulance or getting education shouldn't ruin your life.
- You shouldn't have to be afraid of getting killed while at school.
- Education should be based on universal facts, not religion or some bigots opinion. You should have nation wide lesson plan, which covers the basics students need to master before they can move onto the next grade.
- Your worshipping on some politicans is scary and crazy. They're just humans, not rockstars or gods.
Sugar does not belong in everything, esp. not bread.
My brain agrees but my stomach disagrees. And my heart… probably diseased.
South Park shouldn't be a perfect documentary of your country
Having your national flag EVERYWHERE is ridiculous to most of us.
The rest of the world is much more advanced than you think
Extreme christianity.
All of them look crazy, and here in europa a lot of people are christian but dont make such a deal out of it to harass people.
Multimillionaire Pastors who hoard their wealth rather than help the needy
no, we aren't "jealous of your freedom". In fact, we feel your "freedoms" are quite limited,
and no, you are not the biggest democracy in the world...
Freedom from what? Freedom from fear of getting shot anywhere anytime? No. Fear of getting into debt for higher education? No. Fear of getting into debt from a hospital stay?.... I could go on but it would get embarrassing
We have pubs older than your country
Edit: Anyone getting angry about this comment, you're just proving my point lol.
I know people who live in a house where one of Henry the eighths wives was born. In the 1500s.
That america is not the place Europeans dream of moving to. It’s more of a nightmare.
I wouldn’t move to America if you paid me. (No offence to any Americans reading this but your country is not a safe place to live)
Stop confusing the word "Socialism" with "Communism" and "Fascism".
There is nothing wrong with trying to set up a system wherein people who could use some help actually get help.
(Yes, the system is imperfect but that goes for every system.)
Scare tactics by the Republicans to confuse the poorly educated (That's why Trump likes them.)
Guns are not something you need to protect, you’re children are.
'Schools' which prioritize sports over education aren't schools; they're entertainment profit centers featuring underaged kids.
I taught "Rhodes Scholars" at Oxford, during their year of attending "Oxford" (which was only interested in their money, anyway). Never again... such low standard, such lack of "education". I let someone else do it and be pissed off.
Your most leftist politicians are actually central/right for European standards
And if your great-great-great grandparents moved from Norway to USA, start a family and generations later you were born, you are NOT norwegian. Your ancestors were, you have a bit of nordic blood in you, but you are still 100% american. Not norwegian. Not 25% irish, 10% swedish, 3% finnish, 17% norwegian, 5% danish... just plain american.
Kind reminder that there is no "Nordic blood," "Irish blood," "German blood" - blood has types, not nationalities. We've believed this in the past and it didn't do us any good 🙄
**So many of your problems are caused by your urban development.**
- The rise of religious extremism can be explained by churches being one of the very few places that fill the human need for community activities.
- The passion for guns would not be there if you didn't see the limits of your lawn as pretty much a border to be protected.
- The hate to spend public money on mental health, education, etc would not be there if you were cohabitating with the people harmed by those issues.
- Obesity would not be there if walkable spaces were common.
- Wars may not have been fought if society didn't depend as much on fuel costs being low.
- Your lack of free time to pursue hobbies is partly explained by extra long commutes
I could go on and on...
No wonder you see government as an oppressor of your freedom, and other people as threats: You go from the islands that are your workplace, your shopping space and your home in a car, as everything in between is unwalkable hostile territory.
Europeans spend their lives in common parks, squares, public spaces, social clubs, cafes, pubs... And feel 'at home' walking in between those spaces, since the space in between is a social area as well. That makes it natural to perceive yourself as part of the community, and feel a social obligation to do your part to maintain it (through taxes for example) which seems pretty much impossible in the American lifestyle.
Your car dependent infrastructure is terrible. You shouldn't be forced to own a car just to be able to go anywhere.
Well that'll happen when the capitalists of yestercentury literally buy up as much public transportation infrastructure as possible and shut it all down so the people are forces to buy the same capitalists' automobiles! That's just capitalism, Baebee!
Healthcare *doesn’t* cost that much. It’s all HUGELY inflated
Cannot believe how much you have to pay for insulin, to take just one example.
The world isn't just america. The internet isn't just america.
You're like 3% of the world's population, stop assuming everybody is american... or cares about you. At all.
..also stop electing fascists.
Healthcare is a human right. Not providing affordable healthcare to all Americans is an abomination.
Tipping culture is placing the working class against the working class. And you lot are falling for it instead of striking
You're very loud as tourists. Speak at a normal volume, please.
Yes, I'm petty, and this is insignificant. Just wanted to say this for ages and finally got the chance 😂
No, not petty and it's not insignificant. I also agree and it highlights the 'Loud tourist' as American easily.
You are just a third world country that happens to own a lot of money.
Whats the deal with mega churches? Why do you send them that much money?
They are cults. They believe everything they are told and by sending the pastor money they will be 'Saved'!!
You're not entitled to rule the world and you're not the moral compass of this world.
You don’t make tea in the f*****g microwave
There is something deeply wrong with your lack of real protests or even riots to end school shootings. In most human cultures losing that many kids regularly without lifting a finger to prevent it is unthinkable.
the fact that people are so against gun control shows they feel someone's right to kill another person is more important that a child's right to go to school and not worry about being killed
You can’t have a WORLD CHAMPION of anything if the said champion competed only against other people from the USA. USA is not equal to WORLD
Your republicans are makin’ ya look silly
EpiPens cost $69 in the UK compared to the US $600 and yes the Pharm companies are making a profit.
Your food is killing you. Oh and you are not the best country on earth. Sorry to whatever propaganda they push at you all.
Youre treating a 300 year old piece of paper as the end all, be all of american civilization. Its not a perfect document, the founding fathers werent some demi-gods. In fact, the Magna Carta was a big influence on the founding fathers for both the Declaration of Independence as well as the Constitution.
Its okay to revise the constitution, its not some perfect thing. If it was, how come the founding fathers forgot to put the abolishion of slavery or womens right to vote at least in the bill of rights?
My point is, while the 2A may have made sense in a time where there was a threat of invasion from the english king and american settlers needed to have organised militias to be ready to defend their land, in todays world, yall are putting way too much emphasis on damn guns - to the detriment of your kids
the second amendment was dont at a time when people had single show muskets or pistols they could never have thought that there would be guns that fire thousands of rounds a minute also what possible use could you have at home for a magazine with 100 round capacity
You complain about soccer being boring while the NFL has like 12 minutes of play over 3 hours.
Your 2 party systems even more useless than ours.
Use metric. Use M-E-T-R-I-C!
You do not need a 5000 pound truck to haul your laptop and cellphone to the office.
Visiting European cities and telling us how different it is in America isn’t as good a conversation starter as you think. We know it’s different.
Yall spend too much time worrying about paying taxes and not enough time making sure your taxes go to the right programs.
To be fair, many people in many countries have this problem
Spain is not in Mexico.
Im not American, but... Why half of the articles on BP just writing sh*t about Americans? Geez, leave those people alone! Not even funny anymore.
Time to give this topic a rest for awhile, please BP? It's annoying to pretty much everyone, not matter where they're from
This one is very rude, there is so much aggression. I'm not happy at all with these authors
Wow. I had a hard time concentrating on these while thinking about all the wars of religion, ethnic cleansing and genocides that have happened in Europe over the centuries.
My American friends. This article may seem like whole world either hates you or is laughing at you. But I'd like to say, as an Englishman who has worked for and with Americans for 25 years that you have many great qualities as a people and nation. You're friendly to newcomers, have great national parks, have a brilliant "we can succeed" attitude, work hard, consider public service and charity a duty, can rapidly adapt to new ideas if they are profitable, have a strong admiration and willingness to protect democracy, and have a great sense of humour.
This looks like it wa written by somebody who REALLY hates the US, even more so than the usual US bashing posts. Hey, we have our problems but so does EVERY OTHER COUNTRY in the world. Enough with this c**p BP.
Oh goody, another article cr@pping on Americans and acting like their own sh*t doesn't stink. Give it a f*cking rest BP.
Dear World: Find another hobby. Thank you. PS: Does Putin pay BP to post these? After the number of them, it really does make me want to start a conspiracy theory! Any takers? What should we say? (mostly sarcastic)
It would be much more relevant to have a go at Afghanistan. The way girls and women are treated there is abominal.
Wow! Thanks, BP gang. I was honestly was just on this thread to look at this comment section and laugh at the ignorance and bigotry of the self-righteous. Genuinely, thank you for not jumping on the hatred bandwagon.
I am a flag flying, red white and blue American. And we are aware of many, but not all of the problems that are listed here. And we are fed up with it. But correcting problems so deeply entrenched in bureaucracy (read that as government) is not as easy as you might think. Most of us think a change is coming, soon.
What is up with all the USA bashing? There are over 300 million people here, we aren't all the same! Also, what's hypocritical about this is when other countries make fun of America, they're "correct" and "saying it like it is" but when Americans point out something bad that's happening in another country, they're xenophobic and racist.
so did we just forget about the centuries of genocides, ethnic cleansing, imperialism, racist torture, and sexism europe has?? did you forget that white Americans are literally European?? did you forget that not everyone is a flag obsessed racist here? I'm an American who is not white and people seem to think America is all racist old white guys. Edit: I created a "tired of USA bashing?" post where you can basha anything lightheartedly!! check it out https://www.boredpanda.com/?p=5487728
Aren't ready for? Seriuosly? It's all we hear on here every other day! We know, we know, WE KNOW. Guess what? Your government and cultures aren't perfect, either.
Oh boy! Can it be that mystical, magical time again? That amazing time where BoredPanda runs out of content to copy-and-paste from Reddit? That time where they can’t be bothered to write any of their own content so they have to rely on clickbait and spreading harmful and stereotypical content about other countries. This site has lost any integrity it had from the over the top censorship to the constant “America is a cesspool and Europe is the epitome of the cultural renaissance” listicles. Stereotypes are lazy and cruel. Stop or you’re going to continue losing readers.
Allll of that being said: The majority of this is NOT YOUR FAULT, US citizens. You are being kept in a place that upholds the system by the 0.2 percent who profit from you being in that place. But it IS your resonsibility.
One must have a license to drive a car. Yet can buy and possess guns & ammunitions without proof of ability.
Not everyone from England speaks 'posh'. Take it from someone who is from the North-East of England. We're also not as polite as you seem to think we are. One thing I do like about Americans is that they seem to celebrate eccentricity more than we do. I say "seem" because I'm only basing that on what I've read & seen in media.
Just downvote the article and move on... Don't read it, downvote it .... Then they'll take the hint, people....
Funny how the comments were permitted when people are trashing the US, but let one person defend them and that's just not allowed. Typical.
I haven't read all the entries, but speaking as a US American, the first twenty or so seem pretty accurate. I think more than a few Americans would agree with many of these.
I always find the criticism of American gun culture ironic coming from a continent that is dragging our country (and tax dollars) into another world war.
Wow. Nothing like negatively stereotyping 330+ million of us Americans into one big group of a******s and bashing us…Wait..isn’t that called Bigotry? Especially with some of the disinformation in this post… Little ol’ me, I just wish for world peace & the best for everyone, whatever country they’re from. ☮️💟The ‘rude American tourist’ thing gets me though…I worked at an international 5 star hotel chain, and I’ve met a LOT of rude (and Loud) tourists/foreigners from many different countries. There was a European guy who stormed into the hotel lobby wearing nothing but tighty-whiteys, yelling & cursing because his room service order didn’t have the complimentary chocolate dipped strawberries (we were out) to go with the champagne he ordered. What if I judged all his countrymen by his horrible obnoxious behavior? It looks like that’s what a lot of people on here are doing…
American here. I agree with most (all?) of this and I consequently carry a lot of shame and embarrassment. We deserve to be criticized, but this just feels flat out mean-spirited. One of the things I have enjoyed most about BP is the community I feel with other readers around the world, but this is very divisive.
Jfc. None of this is a secret from us. Recently BP asked what social norms apply to America. And time and time again we said "stop coming here and just pointing out flaws we already know about and frustrate us." Overwelmingly, comments were like "well yeah that's true everywhere". Yeah BUT NO ONE FEELS COMPELLED TO DO IT EVERYWHERE ELSE. stfu, we know, we have very little ability to change these things. Especially when it comes to medical/edu costs. That's why those issues are drug through the mud constantly.
Oh, I got one: Your sports teams need to stay in one city. That does not happen elsewhere (OK, the Sydney Swans were from Melbourne but AFL is dumb). Seriously, Arsenal only moved to the other side of the Thames, but not another city.
Depressing. I hate it here and can't escape Maryland let alone the country
I hate this. Absolutely disgusting. This is hate on a whole different level. Most of these about the personality of Americans are baselessly stereotypical and probably focused on one bad encounter they had. I don't know if this hate all boils down to "they're just jealous" or just hate. I'm sorry, but an English (like from England) guy punched me in the face once. This does not mean that all English people just go around punching people. We have our problems, you have yours. Leave us alone goddamn it
bro I'm from the us, and I know we have issues lots of issues, I know a hell of a lot better than a lot of the people on this thread who's only knowledge is stereotypes. as Americans we don't need the constant reminder. WE ARE TRYING HERE, LEAVE US ALONE. like ur not helping anything ur just being mean. sry that was a rant im just fed up.
Only democracy to use an electoral college (so even if the people didn't vote you in, the college can), has not ratified the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child...
Nailed each & every one of these. I'm an American that's never left the country & not particularly well educated or read but have a functional brain & know there is something inherently wrong w/ our society & system. It's like watching a catastrophe happen in slow motion & I think a lot of us just don't know what to do about it.
@Sergio Bicerra. Why aren't you allowing replies to your nationalistic comments. Is it because you know I'm right? Typical...
So I get that everyone in the world apparently hate the US and all of its people. But y'all either need to let it go or hate us quietly. Tired of hearing the same things over and over.
Okay, must hurt being constantly critized. But from my pov it's just the answer to listening to how the US is the greatest country in the world for so many years. Fair enough for those who think so. But I also want to be able to express that I'm being grateful to live in Germany. The tipping point, when I stopped glorifying the US was, when we found out, that the NSA was spying on us. It was when the relationship between Germany and the US was on really good terms, which was during the Obama legislation. His only reaction was, that that's what friends do. Not even a pretended apology. I'm pretty sure, that the reaction would have been different when it had been the other way round. It also didn't help that Trump openly insulted our chancellor. But this has got nothing to do with Americans. I just really dislike some of the attitudes of the most annoying and loudest ones.
Is it just me or is the vitriol against tipping culture inescapably? As a service worker that likes the topping culture here, wow! I'm not even allowed to say that without a dozen downvotes. For people who hate the hate in America they are really giving us a run for our money with these comments.
Sheesh, as an American: Chill out! Do you see us posting constantly about YOUR countries?
Every single one of you defending the US and denouncing the "bashing" are part of the problem. People should attack what we do here in America even more... maybe when we wake up and realize we aren't anywhere near as "great" as our politicians keep saying we are, then maybe we will start to make changes and become more civilized. No one wants to feel bad about themselves or where they live but its the first damn step in making changes and solving those issues.
America sucks. This has been my favorite article of them all. No don't stop making these articles. America is terrible and depressing af. And I am American. Also you forgot how HOSPITALS HAVE SODA AND A BUNCH OF UNHEALTHY SNACKS in the vending machines. If America isn't dominated by businesses and money and not the care of others, I don't know who the hell is.
The us is by far not the best place to live, but it's also not the worst. I don't have to worry about being raped for going outside without covering every inch of myself. I can carry a gun to protect myself from the one who would actually use it for evil things, and protect others from them too. Not saying we don't need more gun control, but it's still a bit of a wild west out here because our government is full of idiots. But I would enjoy moving away from here if I could (and if I could bring my kitties with!).
Im not American, but... Why half of the articles on BP just writing sh*t about Americans? Geez, leave those people alone! Not even funny anymore.
