Europeans Call Out 50 “Hard Truths” That They Think Americans Are Not Yet Ready To Hear
Americans and Europeans share many things, including a commitment to fundamental democratic principles, a strategic military alliance, and some of the highest living standards in the world. However, there still are some notable differences between the two sides of the Atlantic.
And one Reddit discussion draws attention to many of them in quite a funny way. Started by a person who goes on the platform by the nickname Mamutu7, it asked: "Europeans, what is something us Americans aren't ready to hear?" Immediately, people from the Old Continent started replying, and it became a lighthearted roast pretty quickly.

Excuse the pun, but it seen we’re at a tipping point with tipping culture. Besides people making an average wage expecting tips for just doing their jobs, and restaurants asking for 20-25-30% tips, it’s really shone a spotlight on how stupid tipping culture is.

- Going to a hospital, calling an ambulance or getting education shouldn't ruin your life.
- You shouldn't have to be afraid of getting killed while at school.
- Education should be based on universal facts, not religion or some bigots opinion. You should have nation wide lesson plan, which covers the basics students need to master before they can move onto the next grade.
- Your worshipping on some politicans is scary and crazy. They're just humans, not rockstars or gods.

**So many of your problems are caused by your urban development.**
- The rise of religious extremism can be explained by churches being one of the very few places that fill the human need for community activities.
- The passion for guns would not be there if you didn't see the limits of your lawn as pretty much a border to be protected.
- The hate to spend public money on mental health, education, etc would not be there if you were cohabitating with the people harmed by those issues.
- Obesity would not be there if walkable spaces were common.
- Wars may not have been fought if society didn't depend as much on fuel costs being low.
- Your lack of free time to pursue hobbies is partly explained by extra long commutes
I could go on and on...
No wonder you see government as an oppressor of your freedom, and other people as threats: You go from the islands that are your workplace, your shopping space and your home in a car, as everything in between is unwalkable hostile territory.
Europeans spend their lives in common parks, squares, public spaces, social clubs, cafes, pubs... And feel 'at home' walking in between those spaces, since the space in between is a social area as well. That makes it natural to perceive yourself as part of the community, and feel a social obligation to do your part to maintain it (through taxes for example) which seems pretty much impossible in the American lifestyle.

Youre treating a 300 year old piece of paper as the end all, be all of american civilization. Its not a perfect document, the founding fathers werent some demi-gods. In fact, the Magna Carta was a big influence on the founding fathers for both the Declaration of Independence as well as the Constitution.
Its okay to revise the constitution, its not some perfect thing. If it was, how come the founding fathers forgot to put the abolishion of slavery or womens right to vote at least in the bill of rights?
My point is, while the 2A may have made sense in a time where there was a threat of invasion from the english king and american settlers needed to have organised militias to be ready to defend their land, in todays world, yall are putting way too much emphasis on damn guns - to the detriment of your kids

My American friends. This article may seem like whole world either hates you or is laughing at you. But I'd like to say, as an Englishman who has worked for and with Americans for 25 years that you have many great qualities as a people and nation. You're friendly to newcomers, have great national parks, have a brilliant "we can succeed" attitude, work hard, consider public service and charity a duty, can rapidly adapt to new ideas if they are profitable, have a strong admiration and willingness to protect democracy, and have a great sense of humour.

I am a flag flying, red white and blue American. And we are aware of many, but not all of the problems that are listed here. And we are fed up with it. But correcting problems so deeply entrenched in bureaucracy (read that as government) is not as easy as you might think. Most of us think a change is coming, soon.

There was a European guy who stormed into the hotel lobby wearing nothing but tighty-whiteys, yelling & cursing because his room service order didn’t have the complimentary chocolate dipped strawberries (we were out) to go with the champagne he ordered. What if I judged all his countrymen by his horrible obnoxious behavior? It looks like that’s what a lot of people on here are doing…

American here. I agree with most (all?) of this and I consequently carry a lot of shame and embarrassment. We deserve to be criticized, but this just feels flat out mean-spirited. One of the things I have enjoyed most about BP is the community I feel with other readers around the world, but this is very divisive.

Jfc. None of this is a secret from us. Recently BP asked what social norms apply to America. And time and time again we said "stop coming here and just pointing out flaws we already know about and frustrate us." Overwelmingly, comments were like "well yeah that's true everywhere". Yeah BUT NO ONE FEELS COMPELLED TO DO IT EVERYWHERE ELSE. stfu, we know, we have very little ability to change these things. Especially when it comes to medical/edu costs. That's why those issues are drug through the mud constantly.

Okay, must hurt being constantly critized. But from my pov it's just the answer to listening to how the US is the greatest country in the world for so many years. Fair enough for those who think so. But I also want to be able to express that I'm being grateful to live in Germany. The tipping point, when I stopped glorifying the US was, when we found out, that the NSA was spying on us. It was when the relationship between Germany and the US was on really good terms, which was during the Obama legislation. His only reaction was, that that's what friends do. Not even a pretended apology. I'm pretty sure, that the reaction would have been different when it had been the other way round. It also didn't help that Trump openly insulted our chancellor. But this has got nothing to do with Americans. I just really dislike some of the attitudes of the most annoying and loudest ones.

People should attack what we do here in America even more... maybe when we wake up and realize we aren't anywhere near as "great" as our politicians keep saying we are, then maybe we will start to make changes and become more civilized. The us is by far not the best place to live, but it's also not the worst. I don't have to worry about being raped for going outside without covering every inch of myself. I can carry a gun to protect myself from the one who would actually use it for evil things, and protect others from them too. Not saying we don't need more gun control, but it's still a bit of a wild west out here because our government is full of idiots. But I would enjoy moving away from here if I could (and if I could bring my kitties with!).

Especially with some of the disinformation in this post… Little ol’ me, I just wish for world peace & the best for everyone, whatever country they’re from. ☮️💟The ‘rude American tourist’ thing gets me though…I worked at an international 5 star hotel chain, and I’ve met a LOT of rude (and Loud) tourists/foreigners from many different countries. There was a European guy who stormed into the hotel lobby wearing nothing but tighty-whiteys, yelling & cursing because his room service order didn’t have the complimentary chocolate dipped strawberries (we were out) to go with the champagne he ordered. What if I judged all his countrymen by his horrible obnoxious behavior? It looks like that’s what a lot of people on here are doing…

American here. I agree with most (all?) of this and I consequently carry a lot of shame and embarrassment. We deserve to be criticized, but this just feels flat out mean-spirited. One of the things I have enjoyed most about BP is the community I feel with other readers around the world, but this is very divisive.

Jfc. None of this is a secret from us. Recently BP asked what social norms apply to America. And time and time again we said "stop coming here and just pointing out flaws we already know about and frustrate us." Overwelmingly, comments were like "well yeah that's true everywhere". Yeah BUT NO ONE FEELS COMPELLED TO DO IT EVERYWHERE ELSE. stfu, we know, we have very little ability to change these things. Especially when it comes to medical/edu costs. That's why those issues are drug through the mud constantly.

Oh, I got one: Your sports teams need to stay in one city. That does not happen elsewhere (OK, the Sydney Swans were from Melbourne but AFL is dumb). Seriously, Arsenal only moved to the other side of the Thames, but not another city.

I hate this. Absolutely disgusting. This is hate on a whole different level. Most of these about the personality of Americans are baselessly stereotypical and probably focused on one bad encounter they had. I don't know if this hate all boils down to "they're just jealous" or just hate. I'm sorry, but an English (like from England) guy punched me in the face once. This does not mean that all English people just go around punching people. We have our problems, you have yours. Leave us alone goddamn it

I'm an American that's never left the country & not particularly well educated or read but have a functional brain & know there is something inherently wrong w/ our society & system. It's like watching a catastrophe happen in slow motion & I think a lot of us just don't know what to do about it.

Okay, must hurt being constantly critized. But from my pov it's just the answer to listening to how the US is the greatest country in the world for so many years. Fair enough for those who think so. But I also want to be able to express that I'm being grateful to live in Germany. The tipping point, when I stopped glorifying the US was, when we found out, that the NSA was spying on us. It was when the relationship between Germany and the US was on really good terms, which was during the Obama legislation. His only reaction was, that that's what friends do. Not even a pretended apology. I'm pretty sure, that the reaction would have been different when it had been the other way round. It also didn't help that Trump openly insulted our chancellor. But this has got nothing to do with Americans. I just really dislike some of the attitudes of the most annoying and loudest ones.

Is it just me or is the vitriol against tipping culture inescapably? As a service worker that likes the topping culture here, wow! I'm not even allowed to say that without a dozen downvotes. For people who hate the hate in America they are really giving us a run for our money with these comments.

Every single one of you defending the US and denouncing the "bashing" are part of the problem. People should attack what we do here in America even more... maybe when we wake up and realize we aren't anywhere near as "great" as our politicians keep saying we are, then maybe we will start to make changes and become more civilized. No one wants to feel bad about themselves or where they live but its the first damn step in making changes and solving those issues.

Also you forgot how HOSPITALS HAVE SODA AND A BUNCH OF UNHEALTHY SNACKS in the vending machines. If America isn't dominated by businesses and money and not the care of others, I don't know who the hell is.

The us is by far not the best place to live, but it's also not the worst. I don't have to worry about being raped for going outside without covering every inch of myself. I can carry a gun to protect myself from the one who would actually use it for evil things, and protect others from them too. Not saying we don't need more gun control, but it's still a bit of a wild west out here because our government is full of idiots. But I would enjoy moving away from here if I could (and if I could bring my kitties with!).
