Dogs Before And After Their Haircuts (16 Pics)

I am an animal photographer named Grace Chon and these images are from my new photo series titled HAIRY.

I’ve always found before and after photos from dog grooming to be really funny. Usually it doesn’t even look like it’s the same dog in each photo! I had the idea of shooting a photo series that highlighted this extreme transformation. Each dog went way beyond their normal grooming schedule to grow their hair long and shaggy for the shoot. There’s something so funny to me about seeing a dog so shaggy that they can’t even see! I wanted the after photos to be really extreme by showing a type of cut that’s uncommon to most of us here in the United States.

All the dogs have been groomed in a Japanese grooming style, which doesn’t follow the usual breed standard cuts and rules for grooming that we’re used to seeing. Rather, the emphasis is on making the dog look as adorable as possible – cute on steroids- by highlighting the uniquely cute characteristics of the dog. These cuts are works of art – each haircut takes hours as the majority of the styling is all done with hand scissoring. All the dogs in the series were groomed by the incredibly talented groomers from Healthy Spot in Los Angeles, CA. Many of the groomers there specialize in this style of cut and have been trained by masters from Japan. Hope you enjoy!

Actually, you should look up the company they work for. Healthy Spot works with shelters and several rescue organizations...... they even have an adoption center ON SITE in Santa Monica. They raise thousands of dollars every month for rescue organizations and have one of the most progressive, healthiest pet company philosophies I've ever seen......really pretty sweet, you should take a look.

Wonderful!! You see, love is all in the eye of the person, and we find these doggies completely lovable. The same with people? Yes, a poor or homeless person we tend to shun, as some of the Japanese shunned the workers cleaning up Fukushima. We must upgrade human nature to our highest selves, not what is easy. Love to all.

Well that's the first time I've been called a troll :) If you read my post, Car Shikel, I was referring to Rocco's owners, not to all dog owners. I had a Lhasa Apso, so I know that some dog breeds need to be groomed. My dog had a similar problem to Rocco, in that the hair from the bridge of his nose used to grow up and over his eyes and I can tell you it did effect his eye sight, so as well as taking him to the groomers regularly, we would take the time to trim the hair that was effecting his eye sight and on occasion the hair around his hind quarters so that he didn't get messed up when going to the toilet. I'm not familiar with the Puli breed, so I cannot (and didn't) comment on their eye sight as I don't know anything about them, but I do know something about the type of dog Rocco is, because I used to have one. I did comment on the style of Rocco's grooming too, I didn't like it and I expressed my opinion, the last time I checked that was still legal in this country.

Yes, they are animals, but they are not wild animals. Each one of these dogs REQUIRES grooming to stay healthy. You see, there are no "wild" Poodles or Shih Tzus or Schnauzers or any other breed you can think of. They are the product of Artificial Selection and just like us, they are DOMESTICATED.....meaning if you put them out in the wild, they would DIE....QUICKLY. They are our partners, they get a pretty sweet deal too, constant food supply, longevity...... By the way, when you put on deoderant and clothes, do you think our Bonobo or Chimpanzee cousins are ashamed of us?

I have been a professional dog groomer for almost 50 some years and I can tell you this but what are some of the worst haircuts I've ever seen in my life. Dogs are meant to be cute and fluffy and look like little dogs some of them haircuts look made him look animated or like people or to be humiliated. I do not like them haircuts at all

    Car Shikel

8 years ago DotsCreated by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

Again, many dog breeds REQUIRE grooming in order for them to be healthy and comfortable (and happy!). This is due to the different hair types of domesticated dogs, wild dogs do not grow Poodle hair or long hair like a Shih Tzu. You seem to think that our pets are just tame wild animals......they're not. They are so far removed from their roots that they require maintenance, like nail trims, brushing, teeth cleaning, etc.... One of the most common mistakes pet owners make is to forget their dog is the product of artificial selection, and they are far from "perfect just the way they are" (as you said). Yorkies are prone to collapsed tracheas, Pugs have breathing problems, Beagles have a tendency for dimensia, need I go on? So, now that we've established that domesticated dogs DO need our care and attention (in ways that wild dogs do not, obviously) tell me, what harm does it do to get really really GOOD at taking care of certain needs our pets have, like haircuts?

You can see the dog's humiliation in its eyes, the only one that looks pretty happy with his outcome is Teddy. the other dogs have all had their 'breed' taken out of them and they know it.

    Car Shikel
    Community Member
8 years ago DotsCreated by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

......ok, um....dogs don't know what breed they are. The "humiliation" you're seeing is probably more the result of them being weirded out by the bright lights in the studio, nothing more. Do you seriously think that Schnauzers actually KNOW if they are in a proper Schnauzer cut? ......of course you don't. Oh and Teddy is PANTING (so is Herman btw) that's why they look "happy with their outcome" to you. Panting dogs look like they're smiling, and dogs pant when they're nervous. SO! The dog you think looks the happiest is actually exhibiting signs of mild anxiety. Feel better? Please consult an expert before you spew this kind of nonsense. I know you mean well, Wendy, but professional dog handlers (like me) have to deal with this kind of ignorant c**p all the time and I just want you to know, that we tolerate it, and try to educate people as a labor of love FOR THE DOGS, and you too :)

Well...yes....and the reason is this: They have been created through artificial selection, bred by humans, NOT by Natural Selection. So..... the hair in front of their eyes isn't there for protection or any other useful reason, it's there because that' just how their hair grows now, and (in some cases) it needs to be groomed. Have you ever seen a Grey Wolf or a fox with hair in front of it's eyes? Narp.

Do you have a dog, or know someone who does? Do you think that we should never have domesticated them in the first place? Had we followed your advice and chosen to "respect animals as they are" we would have NO dogs......read this: http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2015/03/150304-neanderthal-shipman-predmosti-wolf-dog-lionfish-jagger-pogo-ngbooktalk/ The current theory as to why WE (homo sapiens) survived and NOT Neanderthals is because we domesticated animals and they didn't. Bovine and Hircine for food, Canine for hunting and companionship. Our partnership with dogs, breeding them, loving them, and GROOMING them goes back 15,000 years....literally. Suddenly, it doesn't seem nearly as vain....or stupid. :)

Most of these haircuts are appalling and the dogs also reflect this in their eyes. Not one looks like the breed it ought to be. Teddy is the only dog who looks half decent, the rest and their looks reflect humiliation or totally gobsmacked.
