I am an animal photographer named Grace Chon and these images are from my new photo series titled HAIRY.
I’ve always found before and after photos from dog grooming to be really funny. Usually it doesn’t even look like it’s the same dog in each photo! I had the idea of shooting a photo series that highlighted this extreme transformation. Each dog went way beyond their normal grooming schedule to grow their hair long and shaggy for the shoot. There’s something so funny to me about seeing a dog so shaggy that they can’t even see! I wanted the after photos to be really extreme by showing a type of cut that’s uncommon to most of us here in the United States.
All the dogs have been groomed in a Japanese grooming style, which doesn’t follow the usual breed standard cuts and rules for grooming that we’re used to seeing. Rather, the emphasis is on making the dog look as adorable as possible – cute on steroids- by highlighting the uniquely cute characteristics of the dog. These cuts are works of art – each haircut takes hours as the majority of the styling is all done with hand scissoring. All the dogs in the series were groomed by the incredibly talented groomers from Healthy Spot in Los Angeles, CA. Many of the groomers there specialize in this style of cut and have been trained by masters from Japan. Hope you enjoy!

Load More Replies...Teddy and Rocco are my FAVORITES. Excellent crop jobs and the photography was on spot.
Reminds me of Edward Scissor Hands when he did hairstyles like that for the ladies then their dogs.
If you scroll it up it looks like a photo of the dog before the rain and after the rain. I give them one rainy day to look like they did before
Why not put your skills to a greater use and take pix of shelter dogs' befores and afters. You will help them get adopted!
Actually, you should look up the company they work for. Healthy Spot works with shelters and several rescue organizations...... they even have an adoption center ON SITE in Santa Monica. They raise thousands of dollars every month for rescue organizations and have one of the most progressive, healthiest pet company philosophies I've ever seen......really pretty sweet, you should take a look.
Load More Replies...I liked Lana. Hair cut flat along the bottom like that always looks neat.
I love the style of Rocco. Very creative. And Raider's facial expressions, omg hysterical.
You'll get a kick out of my pet portraits: https://www.therenaissancepet.com/
My poodle, cayenne, looks s lot on both photos , except he has more of a smiley face. He's 10 still peppy and has heart disease . I'll try yo send my baby's photo for you to share... And perhaps do something while he's still playfull! Thank you so much ! Monacohn@gmail.com
Had a terrier like that. In the summer my wife would trim him down. His hair filled two grocery bags and he lost about four sizes.
- Athena, Lana, and Raider didn't look too enthused. Yuki seemed content and the rest were pleased with their make over.
Herman looks just like my Bichon without the haircut, I freakin' love him! <3
Raider look bored before and after hahah. I like how they made Teddy look crazier after haircut :D Biggie Small's haircut is one of the most popular style in Asia atm. Herman became such a bright eyed doggie! Fantastic. And lastly, Yuki is such a lady after~
Biggie Smalls, I love you!!! (I love all of you, don't feel left out!!)
Wonderful!! You see, love is all in the eye of the person, and we find these doggies completely lovable. The same with people? Yes, a poor or homeless person we tend to shun, as some of the Japanese shunned the workers cleaning up Fukushima. We must upgrade human nature to our highest selves, not what is easy. Love to all.
i have a softspot for Lana, just because underdogs always look like they deserve more love
If your dog has those reddish stains around their eyes and mouth, it's a kind of yeast infection! There are remedies to sprinkle on their food, very easy!
Nah my dog is just a ver messy eater
Load More Replies...Yuki before and after looks like a StarWars figure. I like the results for Lana and Herman, they look now very special. Teddy was a cutie before, after the cut ... But that's personal taste.
It is interesting how the dogs look like they would have completely different personalities after their haircuts. Teddy in particular. I wonder if I could get a haircut that would change how people perceive me. That would be great.
These are fantastic! Edward Scissorhands for sure!!!! Love these dogs and their cuts!!!!
Some of them look angry after the transformation but they are so beautiful and lovely
Personally, our spaniel hates going, but he LOVES being clean and fluffy afterwards.
Load More Replies...Teddys face is so happy too cute bet there all relieved at the haircut. my dogs are a before at the moment. Reminder: phone the groomer
It’s really not that hard to keep the hair out of your dogs damn eyes before they go back to the groomer. They like to see.
Different styles than I would do. I've been grooming for 25 years. I prefer the neater more finished look. But the Japanese groomers are creative. As long as the pet parents like it.
I'm an old school groomer 30 years .....I love them all ...so creative!!!!! ❤️the 🐾 doo's
Hi, No idea if my previous post went through... but I wanted mainly to ask persmision to use your photos, where I leave the link to this website to be used in a story I made and that is avaialble in this link: http://bit.ly/suomi002 Thanks! Kampamo04-...41cd6c.jpg
Hello , I wanted to ask for your permission to use the photo of your dog for a story I made. I give total credits to this website. You can see the story on the following link: http://bit.ly/suomi002 Thanks in advance. Kampamo04-...883ab7.jpg
I like Teddy before. He looks like he put his paw into an electrical socket in the after.
Most look happy after but a couple look worn out from their "ordeal" lol
I love seeing dogs with human haircuts! And I love seeing dogs with dog haircuts. Well, I love seeing dogs in general.
Dahling! But you can tell some of them were't too keen on the idea.🐩
Very cute! The most important thing is that the 'clients', the doggies seems to like it.
Great set of photos from this pet photographer, plus an obviously very talented groomer!
Well that's the first time I've been called a troll :) If you read my post, Car Shikel, I was referring to Rocco's owners, not to all dog owners. I had a Lhasa Apso, so I know that some dog breeds need to be groomed. My dog had a similar problem to Rocco, in that the hair from the bridge of his nose used to grow up and over his eyes and I can tell you it did effect his eye sight, so as well as taking him to the groomers regularly, we would take the time to trim the hair that was effecting his eye sight and on occasion the hair around his hind quarters so that he didn't get messed up when going to the toilet. I'm not familiar with the Puli breed, so I cannot (and didn't) comment on their eye sight as I don't know anything about them, but I do know something about the type of dog Rocco is, because I used to have one. I did comment on the style of Rocco's grooming too, I didn't like it and I expressed my opinion, the last time I checked that was still legal in this country.
Strange cuts but whatever some of these pups don't like the cut at all! Lol
I'm sure they feel like us....sometimes our hair looks better BEFORE the visit to the hairdresser :P
Radar looks unenthused before and after. LOL My favorite is Athena. I always loved the odd looking dogs.
I love Lana, she has just the one tooth sticking out, she is adorable. Yuki was awesome, too. What am I saying, they were all awesome!
I thought the curly hair was a dead giveaway haha. It's a poodle.
Load More Replies...I read the Japanese are also WAY into dying their dogs to make them look like other animals. These are adorable! Although, I think Lana's original hair suited her MUCH better! That tooth! It needs crazy hair.
I love these...they are so artistic!!!! Good job to all the groomers!!!!
All those dogs looked better before. They are animals. Not dolls. Wolves would be so ashamed to learn that these are their cousins...
Yes, they are animals, but they are not wild animals. Each one of these dogs REQUIRES grooming to stay healthy. You see, there are no "wild" Poodles or Shih Tzus or Schnauzers or any other breed you can think of. They are the product of Artificial Selection and just like us, they are DOMESTICATED.....meaning if you put them out in the wild, they would DIE....QUICKLY. They are our partners, they get a pretty sweet deal too, constant food supply, longevity...... By the way, when you put on deoderant and clothes, do you think our Bonobo or Chimpanzee cousins are ashamed of us?
Load More Replies...Apart from Herman and Yuki, I like all the before.. they are way cuter than the after..
I'm not sure, but those are definitely not AND sanctioned haircuts. Cute tho.
I loved Raider...all the haircuts in the world aren't gonna change that F.Y. expression :)
Some of these were adorable before AND after (Lana's was the only cut I didn't care for)!
My shih tzu before and after ???? https://instagram.com/p/4MryCJH1Vi/
nothing strange in that. I agree. Ala natural is best. They have fur for a reason.
Load More Replies...Athena... That's disturbing... Does not even look like a dog anymore...
Probably she just felt uncomfortable because of short hairs everywhere you know they could prick her
I have been a professional dog groomer for almost 50 some years and I can tell you this but what are some of the worst haircuts I've ever seen in my life. Dogs are meant to be cute and fluffy and look like little dogs some of them haircuts look made him look animated or like people or to be humiliated. I do not like them haircuts at all
Just ridiculous. Let dogs be dogs. They aren't children. They aren't babies. They are perfect just the way they are!
Again, many dog breeds REQUIRE grooming in order for them to be healthy and comfortable (and happy!). This is due to the different hair types of domesticated dogs, wild dogs do not grow Poodle hair or long hair like a Shih Tzu. You seem to think that our pets are just tame wild animals......they're not. They are so far removed from their roots that they require maintenance, like nail trims, brushing, teeth cleaning, etc.... One of the most common mistakes pet owners make is to forget their dog is the product of artificial selection, and they are far from "perfect just the way they are" (as you said). Yorkies are prone to collapsed tracheas, Pugs have breathing problems, Beagles have a tendency for dimensia, need I go on? So, now that we've established that domesticated dogs DO need our care and attention (in ways that wild dogs do not, obviously) tell me, what harm does it do to get really really GOOD at taking care of certain needs our pets have, like haircuts?
Load More Replies...Raider looks depressed after his cut & don't blame him - even his ears have been lopped off - poor wee thing.
Rocco and Herman are my favorites. Teddy has that "hit by lightning" look, which I find appealing. But oh my god some of the others one are just bad, especially Raider.
You can see the dog's humiliation in its eyes, the only one that looks pretty happy with his outcome is Teddy. the other dogs have all had their 'breed' taken out of them and they know it.
......ok, um....dogs don't know what breed they are. The "humiliation" you're seeing is probably more the result of them being weirded out by the bright lights in the studio, nothing more. Do you seriously think that Schnauzers actually KNOW if they are in a proper Schnauzer cut? ......of course you don't. Oh and Teddy is PANTING (so is Herman btw) that's why they look "happy with their outcome" to you. Panting dogs look like they're smiling, and dogs pant when they're nervous. SO! The dog you think looks the happiest is actually exhibiting signs of mild anxiety. Feel better? Please consult an expert before you spew this kind of nonsense. I know you mean well, Wendy, but professional dog handlers (like me) have to deal with this kind of ignorant c**p all the time and I just want you to know, that we tolerate it, and try to educate people as a labor of love FOR THE DOGS, and you too :)
Load More Replies...Those dogs had hair covering their eyes for a reason! Not everything should be about beauty -_-
Well...yes....and the reason is this: They have been created through artificial selection, bred by humans, NOT by Natural Selection. So..... the hair in front of their eyes isn't there for protection or any other useful reason, it's there because that' just how their hair grows now, and (in some cases) it needs to be groomed. Have you ever seen a Grey Wolf or a fox with hair in front of it's eyes? Narp.
Load More Replies...I wonder why people can't respect animals as they are? Creating such weird breeds and then making them look silly is vain and stupid.
Do you have a dog, or know someone who does? Do you think that we should never have domesticated them in the first place? Had we followed your advice and chosen to "respect animals as they are" we would have NO dogs......read this: http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2015/03/150304-neanderthal-shipman-predmosti-wolf-dog-lionfish-jagger-pogo-ngbooktalk/ The current theory as to why WE (homo sapiens) survived and NOT Neanderthals is because we domesticated animals and they didn't. Bovine and Hircine for food, Canine for hunting and companionship. Our partnership with dogs, breeding them, loving them, and GROOMING them goes back 15,000 years....literally. Suddenly, it doesn't seem nearly as vain....or stupid. :)
