Atemlos? O my dear... they chose the worst german song i can think of 🤣
They could at least have taken one of the funny songs, that are sung on parties when everybody is drunk. 🥲
Load More Replies...13. A couple of them I had never seen written before - the Baltic ones were pure guesswork.
They really were lol. Lithuanian and Latvian are notoriously similar to each other, I only managed to distinguish them because I've been friends with a Lithuanian guy for over a decade.
Load More Replies...Only a couple wrong, bit annoyed by the Hindi/Sanskrit ones - it's the same script after all, isn't it? Nearly all the other non-latin scripts are instantly recognisable.
I only got that one right because I guessed Hindi the first one so I assumed the second one would be different.
Load More Replies...15/18 - I confused Latvian and Lithuanian twice, lol. Got lucky on Icelandic though. I knew it was Scandinavian, but not which one.
Islandic is the only Germanic language that kept the letter þ (thorn). That's how I recognized it.
Load More Replies...11/20, I had great difficulty figuring out Eastern European languages, tbh. I don't think I got one of them right, My Estonian SIL will be shaking his head in disappointment, lol.
When I studied Greek “Ta Pedía tou Pirea” was the very first song we studied. I knew it immediately. I absolutely adore Melina Mercouri - she won an Oscar for that performance if my memory serves me, or at least was nominated
Singing - as a German - "Fengaraki mou lampro..." in the middle of a South Peloponnes village's kafeneion made all the old men there well up and got me an ouzo "on the house". (I've self taught German for 21 hours (urgent emergency learning because I had to spontaneously spend a month in this village far from any English speaker) and this was the ONLY song on the CD at this point 🤣)
Load More Replies...I did better than I thought considering I only speak one language and know only a few phrases of from about a dozen others.
Only got half right the first time. The "romance" and Asian languages as well as German were easy enough, but the other European ones definitely threw me off for their similarities.
I speak several of these languages and can identify a few more by key words. The Central and Eastern European languages were the most difficult to distinguish from each other for me.
17/18 I want to apologize to the people of Wales for not being able to recognize their language. I tried. :')
Very nice test! Gotta improve my knowledge of Asian languages and characters (14/18).
18/18. No challenge, at least with the examples chosen. They're very distinct if you know what the distinct bits of their scripts are.
I believe that's largely the point, to see if you know what the distinct bits are.
