Celebrity Colorist Helps Women To Stop Covering Their Grey Roots And Embrace Their Natural Hair (35 New Pics)
It seems contradictory that we, as human beings, spend a lifetime imagining what we can do to live long, while avoiding as much as possible the physical signs of aging. Wrinkles, expression marks and the ever-remembered white hair are often pursued by a society that aims at old age, but not its implications.
American hairstylist Jack Martin is someone who doesn't think so. As a celebrity colorist, he believes he has a mission to show men, and especially women, the power and beauty of beautiful gray hair. They are the biggest victims of the dictatorship of beauty: how many men have been praised for being gray and how many women have heard that they got older with white hair? Complex, isn't it? Jack believes that embracing one's natural hair color is a way to break free from societal expectations and to celebrate aging gracefully.

Given the chance, Bored Panda reached out to the talented person behind these transformations. Jack Martin, a renowned colorist and hairstylist, shared his expertise on the topic of silver and gray hair color with us!
When asked about a particularly memorable transformation he has done for a client, Martin shared, "I've had my fair share of hair transformations over the years, but one that really stands out to me was a client who came to me with a problem. She had been dyeing her hair from gray to brown with at-home box color every three to four weeks for years. Now that she was retired and spending more time in nature, she no longer wanted to fuss with her hair color that often as it was also very damaged. So, we decided to give her hair a silver makeover, giving her natural gray hue a touch of polish while also cutting down on salon visits. Let's just say, it was a silver-y good decision."
I think that is a lot of these instances these women just lack someone reminding them of how beautiful they really are... They will have it now.
Martin went on to explain his process for creating a silver or gray hair color that complements a client's natural gray pattern. "My process is by using a color extractor to remove any remaining artificial color. Then, leaving the gray roots intact, I bleach the rest of the head to prep hair for the new silver color. Next, I base the new color on the hair's natural gray pattern. I ask clients to come in with three to four inches of their roots grown out, so I can study how their hair is colored naturally. I then re-create that pattern for the full head of hair. Some clients have grey hair mostly in the front, and the back is darker, so I match that and add some darkness to it."
Jack also discussed how he approaches the consultation process with clients who are interested in transitioning to silver or gray hair color. "I approach it with a lot of care. I make sure I understand what the client's expectations are and how much maintenance they're willing to do before I give them my professional advice."
When asked about how to maintain the silver or gray color between salon visits, Martin shared, "I recommend them to use sulfate-free shampoos and conditioners and to avoid chlorine and salt water. I also recommend them to come back every 2-3 months for a touch-up."
Lastly, we asked Jack to explain how he would see the trend of gray hair progressing in the future. "In fact, I've been quoted saying, 'Embracing your natural gray hair is a sign of confidence and grace. It's not just a trend, it's a lifestyle choice.' And I truly believe that. With the rise of the 'granny hair' trend and more and more celebrities and influencers embracing their natural gray, I think we'll see an even bigger shift towards people embracing their natural gray and wanting to enhance it with silver and gray shades at the salon."
Very pretty. So many women feel that they have to sacrifice their self and personal sexiness to be a mommy, and this is not the case. But I can imagine that it all does require a vast amount of energy...
Mav mav, these are all people who had been covering up their NATURAL grey hair, and decided they wanted to embrace that, not people who wanted to dye their hair grey
She was kind to herself to allow her natural beautiful gray hair shine through🥰!
The hair is beautiful, but that mouth. I’m sorry but I hate hate hate enlarged lips…
Exactly I hate how plastic surgery looks on peoples faces, wrinkles are literally more beautiful than that unnatural stuff
Load More Replies...Look, there is so much filler in those lips, botoxed to plastic, nose has definatley been done, and a lower facelift. Been in the business for 35 yrs, can't fool me. So, what's so natural with gray hair?? Come on, shoulda left this one out.
Most of these pictures are very misleading. Notice how the 'before' pics are usually taken in unflattering poses, unsmiling, without makeup. Then the 'after' pics are taken with full makeup, smiling, deliberate poses to minimize camera distortions, and possibly even photoshopped. All of which is to ensure that the 'after' picture looks better than the before regardless.
I’ve been transitioning to grey for a year now. These photos are all well and good, but if your natural colour is darker, as mine is, colouring grey ie lightening hair is very damaging. I think I’ll stick with the natural process and end up with grey, healthy hair.
yes they are mostly just bad dye job to good dye job. It would be different if they were going to 'natural' color.
Load More Replies...I don't really like my natural hair color ( dark ash blonde ) so I don't cover my gray hair anymore. It's there, I'm almost 45, so: Gray hair, don't care.... Plus I've had some compliments that it's kind of sexy like it is :)
Same, I shaved my head right before the pandemic to start over with my grey. Love it!
Load More Replies...I don't want to see pictures from "Before" and "After" they got their hair dyed grey. I want to see what their hair looks like a month later, when their natural grey roots are showing and the rest of their hair is not natural. How does that look? Are they supposed to continue to dye their hair grey forever?
I've never colored my salt and pepper hair, and I love some of the looks here. But for these women with a lot of color left on their hair, the stylist has to bleach out the color and then cover/fill in with gray color. It's faster than letting your gray hair grow out, but the end results in these photos aren't their natural shades of gray and white.
Load More Replies...It's not just color change, it is the haircut and also the hair styling. Makeup is changing the face and voala! Also I don't think the grey or silver hair looks good on all of the ladies, not sure why - maybe the skin tone, eye color idk.
Why are ppl complaining so much in these comments? "They'll have to keep dying their hair" ...... they literally were before tho.... or they let it grow out which looked terrible. Dying your hair to not be grey & dying it a lighter grey isn't going to fade the same way! Not to mention you can tone the hair too rather than completely covering it. Most of these women look like they were coloring their hair before this to cover the grey. So I don't understand why ppl are complaining. Or saying "this is misleading! Everyone looks better with makeup & a good pose!" Okay but they didn't have their makeup & hair done before... THATS THE FUCKEN POINT! It's about bringing confidence to women who are going grey by embracing their grey & helping them style it & tone it so it looks a little healthier. Maybe they're smiling afterwards because they're happy with the outcome! They all look gorgeous before & after. But they all needed some help because they weren't embracing their grey before.
I love the look of grey hair, but I'm sad that stylists will mostly straighten the hair of people with curly or wavy hair. I can't do the blow out by myself and I haven't found someone who will style my hair naturally.
I started growing my hair out at 52 and it took about 2.5 years b/c it's long and grows slowly. I had thought I was about 50% gray at that point but upon growing it out, realized I was not even 20%. There's just quite a bit right in front. I LOVE it! It's like silver glitter is growing out of my head, telling me I am fabulous! What I was shocked about is how many women had feelings about my hair. "Aren't you worried you'll look older than your husband?" I am older than him and he happens to look really young. That's ok with us. "You're so brave growing your hair out!" I was not fighting crime or cancer...how tf does my hair make me brave? "It looks ok on you but I'm just not ready to look old." That was my 6 years older sister! I'm 61 now and it's still really just in front, maybe 25% but probably less. #freeyourgrays!
As a silver, I found this article misleading and disappointing. These are heavy, heavy dye jobs, and some of them look purple!
Aging is as natural a process as growing up; you can look beautiful at any age. A well-groomed, properly dressed person will always look good, with or without gray hair, with or without baldness. It is great that in this case, the master helps to see and accept his beauty, even if it differs from the standards.
Nice transformations. But also a good reminder WHY I stopped putting henna in my hair when I started going a bit grey. Have not dyed my hair since and am now waiting for it to go silver all over. LOVE the silver! I firmly believe that your natural hair colour isusually the one that suits you best and grey hair softens your face/ wrinkles, especially if your hair was dark before. Looking back all the henna was not really suiting me. Well anyway that's just my opinion.
My sister in law grew her colour out during lockdown, she is not gleaming silver, absolutely stunning
Load More Replies...Its true they look better in the 2nd pic due to makeup. But Im looking at the hair color which is amazingly more beautiful in the 2nd pics.
I quit coloring my hair back in 2004. When the roots had grown out I had it cut short, like Jamie Lee Curtis short. Lo & behold I have streaks of pure platinum. Will never color it again.
Don’t get your hopes up. This guy isn’t taking new clients for years, charges $3k-$5k and the procedure takes 6+ hours.
He's done a good job with the transition, but every single one of these ladies will need to re-tone their hair every 8 washes to maintain the grey and then, 90% of the time it turns brown. How do I know? I've tried that route. Now I'm 6 months into growing it out naturally and actually loving the colours. I've got silver, white and blonde streaks amongst my dark blonde natural hair, and it looks better than any colour. I'm a third of the way of my current length.
Seeing these pictures featured on BP every so often is one reason I started rocking my natural silver. My hair is probably 30% silver, 70% dark brown. I wear my crown with pride most days (it can be a struggle sometimes, ngl!) and hope it encourages other women to give themselves the space and permission to do the same if they so choose.
My dad side of the family, everyone is completely gray. I wish my hair would hurry up and turn completely gray. I've been wanting a head full of gray hair for years now and still waiting. I do have some gray hair, just not a full blown gray yet
I started getting silver hairs when I turned thirty, and I already decided that'll I'll never colour them. I love every new one that pops up.
Not one of these had a picture of a woman with naturally somewhat curly and short grey hair. The vast majority of hair was blown straight into all these beautiful long hair styles. Trust me, all that flowing shiny manageable hair won’t last long. Grey hair is for the most part very dry. It frizzes easily. It is difficult to get that shine. If you don’t wear make up you do look washed out. Who wants to do make up like these ladies are wearing, every day? This is pretty deceiving.
Women that have the courage to embrace their gray hair are sexy as all get out. That attitude is a good half of that sexy I mentioned.
