Nobody gets surprised by jerk designs anymore. Those are everywhere, from face creams to cereal boxes, and the long time favorite offender—bags of chips, which are known for their conspiracy to sell air, ‘cause why wouldn't they throw just a tiny bit more inside?!
But believe it or not, the internet’s got a fair share of evidence that the very opposite of jerk design exists. In fact, there’s a whole subreddit dedicated to examples of “design that benefits the user at the expense of the company.”
You heard it right, sometimes brands and companies can truly come up with solutions that show they do care about the people who use them. And no, there's no irony there! So scroll down to see the best of anti-jerk designs spotted by eagle-eyed people who just had to share them online.

The Dyslexie Font
And incredibly clear too. No more “unfortunate” choices of font that make an innocent word appear to be something not so innocent.
Load More Replies...As someone who flips letters, flips words, and merges sentences while reading, this felt like reading with a safety net.
reading music or words, i have skipped a line and gotten lost. i found this font so easy to read.
Load More Replies...I’m dyslexic and I read this perfectly. I’m super impressed and never noticed this font before.
This has given me a good idea for the next font I design for a video game.
This font really works! ?It keeps the letters from jumping all over the page.
It actually doesn't work, according to the National Institutes for Health. I wanted to download the font to put on my computer (I've never been diagnosed with any kind of reading problem, but...), so I looked up where to download the font from and the very first thing that Google found for me was the NIH study: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5934461/
Load More Replies...It's pretty useful. Ther is also OpenDyslexic that can be placed as an addon to browsers and is also included on all Kindles. I find that a different font is actually even better, but dyslexia isn't the same for everyone.
Wait. What is OpenDyslexic and how do I find it on my kindle?
Load More Replies...Whenever I can I change things to the Dyslexia font, I don;t have dyslexia but it is easier to read.
This example seems to be blurry because it is an enlarged screenshot.
Load More Replies...As a dyslexic aspergeric I like it, it reminds me of the old Ladybird books, particularly the early learners, or the primary school early-reader 'Rainbow' books, where you didn't get the next colour untill you had mastered the one you were one!
This just made me tear up! I could never explain to people why I couldn't read certain things I was given..This is amazing.
I'm told (by a teacher) learning cursive is helpful for people with dyslexia as well.
This is so great! Even though I’m not dyslexic, I always flip letters and this is so helpful.
Me too. With a light green background.
Load More Replies...I don't see well and this font is a joy to read through. Bottom area darker than the top. There are even slightly different spacings for different age groups. Genius! ...After going to the website I see the font is for sale. Interesting to read how and why this font was made. Which reminds me...I love BP with all my heart but have suggested to them that they make the comment section's font black and not light grey as it is, because it's really hard to read.. Hey BP..in the spirit of Dyliexie's contribution to Humanity..how about it? :)
We made this available to our students, and they really like it. It's free! :-)
Saw what it looked like to read if you are dyslexic, holy cow! I had NO idea!
As a member of a family with multiple dyslexic members, I appreciate this SO much.
Even for those without dyslexia (like me), that is SO much more readable than the font I normally use. I wonder if it will be made available in monospace (I'm a programmer).
omg, since I just found this so amazingly easy to read, could it mean that I have been dyslexic all my life and didn't know it?
Amazing and ingenious! this is the type of people we need in the world!
I am not dyslexic, but I actually found it easier to read this font than many other fonts 👍🏻
I would hope all school books would be printed in this font. It would so help children like my Grandson.
Absolutely the coolest thing I have ever seen in "print". NOW, to get everything printed, in particular, newspapers, magazines and closed captioning on television programming changed/upgraded to this type font and spacing.
I have read that if this font is unavailable for your use, use comic sans. As you will notice, it is very similar and comes with Word and other word processing programs.
My son reads with this font. It also helps him to make the background black and the text white.
This should become a standard font for offical documents and in schools!
I felt like I needed to slow down to read it, like it was being spelled out to have each letter understood. as I kept reading, I realized they executed their intention well. Anyone notice the lower case q being uppercase, probably because it is like a p.
This was so needed when I tutored 3rd grade readers who were slotted to fail the exams. Having them read over what was there when they fused sentences and giving them an index card to follow their place helped. They were soon correcting each other and did not feel they were being punished. We made a game of it. All had the same issues with reading. We worked on comprehension too. They flipped words within a sentence too sometimes. One boy when asked to read was incredible. He sounded like an actor and gave emotion and excitement to what he read. It was very special to hear him read. There was a group of about 6 students. At the time they had just fallen through the cracks on determining what was wrong. Now Dyslexia is much easier to identify. All passed their tests. Mid 90's. I was the Art teacher but was told to tutor reading and math.
Finally read a whole paragraph without going back every two lines to reread
I have dyslexia and usually I have to reread allot. And the close together letters strain my eyes. This read really easily. I hope to see this font more often. It can make life much easier for us.
As someone with dyslexia, this is very easy on the eyes. Usually I have to reread allot, but this went quite smoothly. I hope to see more of this font.
this is frickin' genius!! (why Have I never heard of this before? it should be EVERYWHERE!)
Should be used in school material. I don’t know how many times I had to get close to my sons screen to see whether it was an r or another letter. He is a 1st grader
A diagnosis of dyslexia has saved the self-esteem of so many people who previously thought they must be stupid to not "get" what everyone else could. This type of tool can help bring them up even more. Kudos!!
I'm a bit skeptisch, my students with dyslexia have great problems with "e" and "a" so I prefer Comic sans (yes, it's horrible), cause the a is more like a handskript a and so better to differenciate.

Load More Replies...They use this font in a series of kids books that are pretty cool https://www.amazon.com/Explosive-Beginning-April-Sopczak/dp/1937947416
That is easier to read. I’m not dyslexic, but I can’t ever seem to concentrate for long when reading on a screen. Especially love the using Q instead of q
But p, b, d still look the same flipped/rotated? I don't get it.
Actually, they don't. If you look at the letters the the p is completely rounded, the d has an angle on the bottom of the curve and the b has an angle on the top of the curve. I'm a 6th grade reading teacher and I use this font on all of my presentations and worksheets for my class. I can honestly say it does make a difference for struggling young readers.
Load More Replies...To find out more about the subreddit community that collects and shares examples of good design, Bored Panda reached out to its moderator Dale. He explained that the subreddit was first created as an offshoot of another subreddit with a similar name.
“It was created for the purpose of celebrating the effort made by companies and organizations that are directly for the benefit of the consumer. Particularly those efforts that may be at their expense.” Meanwhile, the sub has grown fairly strictly along these lines ever since. Dale also said that the community members celebrate good design and environmentally friendly decisions made by these groups.
“This may include things like the ability to turn off ads for free on free apps. Or, articles or videos that include the answer to questions before the content (such as in the title) as a kind of anti-clickbait. Our sub icon Adam Neely is a YouTuber and a great example of this.”

Let’s All Think Back To Middle School (Or Any Other Time) And Think About How Great It Would’ve Been To Have This Instead Of Needing To Muster The Courage To Ask Someone
This is useful. I hope more schools and education systems are aware of these issues.
The community currently has over 160k members that make up “a diverse crowd with a common goal to celebrate and spread the news of good companies and organizations with consumer-friendly practices. It has been gaining traction and the subreddit has been growing steadily since its inception,” the moderator added.
Dale believes that companies these days are moving further in two opposite directions. “Some companies are becoming more ethical, caring and thoughtful towards their consumers, doing what is right and being rewarded through the growing mindset of being an ethical consumer.”
However, “There are also companies that are prioritizing fast profit over everything else and, as a result, will be gracing the front page of our sister subreddit.” “I think more and more, as time goes on, companies need to be mindful of which side they will choose when it comes to developing their brand,” he added.

Dale believes that communities such as their subreddit are vital to spread the word and shed light on these virtuous business practices. “Being nice is its own reward. However, if subreddits like ours can help boost these companies, then all the better.”
The moderator added that companies should be rewarded for ethical and kind decisions. “There does not need to be a financial loss for kindness. Money spent on good design can pay dividends in this brave new global economy.”

Designs that we see on the top shelves at supermarkets or on the top line in our internet browser have changed beyond recognition in the past decades. Previously, they all served a lone purpose to sell, whatever it took. From bright colors to deceptive packaging, nothing used to be off limits.
But millennials are now driving brands to practice socially responsible and user-friendly design. Not only are they less likely to spend their hard-earned money on things they don’t really need to compare with previous generations, they also expect much more from the brand than the thing they’re buying.

It turns out that millennials prefer to do business with brands that have prosocial messages, ethical standards, and sustainable methods. Not only do they expect companies to be transparent in their manufacturing processes, they also deeply care about them being socially responsible.
This is partly because, in the past decade, the things we consume, buy, and wear have become silent messages we give out to people. Every brand label may speak volumes, and millennials are not risking putting on a jacket just because it’s cold outside when they know very well that it’s produced in sweat shops in third-world countries.

Consider that typical millennials and the following generations are much less susceptible to “traditional” marketing techniques, such as the television commercial and the billboard. It’s because their hectic lifestyles have taught them to value their time and choose wisely where to eat, what to wear, and how to spend their evening.
Moreover, surrounded by a capitalist boom in early childhood, millennials grew immune to obtrusive marketing, which is mainly self-interested. These days, they expect brands to be open and communicative about how they operate in the world and to seek incremental and positive social change.

The key term is “corporate social responsibility,” which, according to Forbes, embodies 4 major qualities that millennials look for in companies these days. First, they want companies to be actively invested in the betterment of society and the solution of social problems. Second, they want companies that prioritize “making an impact” on the world around them.
Third, they want companies to be open and honest about their efforts—and to be public about their pro-social initiatives. And lastly, millennials want companies to involve their customers in their good works. An opportunity to give back to people is something inherently millennial, and shows how every effort from the brand’s point of view really matters.

To sum it up, the bare minimum of a user-friendly package that doesn’t promise what it cannot give is no longer enough. As generations are changing, marketing trends are shifting simultaneously. The brands who’ll be the first to adapt will likely take the biggest piece of the new consumer loyalty cake.
