Go Get Uncomfortable

There are people who just don’t care what people say or think about them. I’m not one of them. I have to try really hard not to care. And even when I say I don’t, I still do.

That’s why getting out of of my comfort zone is so hard. I care about what people will think.

So I tried an exercise today. I sang on the train. It’s often a great place to get out of your comfort zone. It’s full of people you don’t know. Everyone keeps to themselves. No one makes eye contact. And it’s quiet. The only sounds coming are from the moving train.

This was hard for me. Right away my lizard brain was telling me not to do it. “Everyone is quiet, if you sing they will stare,” it was telling me.

My heart was pounding until, little by little, I let out some tunes.

But almost nobody stared like I thought they would. Maybe they took a glimpse, but then they kept minding their own business. And once I got through that fear I started to get a little braver. And my singing got louder and louder.

Try singing on the train today. Begin slowly and quietly. And work your way up. You find that nobody really cares. It’s all in your head. You’re not as important as your mind makes you believe.

And there’s a lesson there. Whenever you’re doing something like public speaking or anything that puts you out there to be judged, nobody cares. Nobody cares about you as much as you. So give it you’re all. Don’t hold back.
