If there’s one challenge that always amuses me, it’s emojis. There’s no better way to avoid art block and find inspiration.
For 4 years now, I’ve been asking people who follow me on Tiktok (and Instagram) to give me emoji combinations, and every time I’m surprised by what comes up!
Sometimes, just seeing these emojis lined up gives me an idea, other times I have to rack my brains a bit more to come up with something that works. Whatever the case, it’s always an exercise I’m particularly fond of.
Having produced several hundred of them, I can clearly distinguish 3 types of drawing that emanate from this challenge:
Character design: Generally speaking, when there are only 2 emojis or very “descriptive” emojis, I focus on one character to create. I then work in the same way as I would to create an original character, looking for the right attitude, the right accessory, color, details…
Stories: Sometimes, nothing comes directly to mind when I see the emojis… but rather a feeling, an emotion, a story that can be told. And it’s often the only way to bring the different elements together in a coherent way. These are certainly my favorite type, even if they’re not the most graphically interesting…
And finally the last kind, but more rarely for me: visual compositions. From time to time, I’m looking for nothing more than something pleasant to look at, a pattern, combination of colours, playing with shadows…
With this challenge, I can work with any type of material: acrylic markers, watercolors, ink or alcohol markers… I don’t hold back on anything as long as I get out of my comfort zone!
