I was with my husband 19 years and I might have consulted with him if I wasn't sure of my choice but if I was decided I might have told him in advance. If he had such a rediculous reaction there'd have been trouble. In the end he did have a negative reaction to my broken spine and so is my ex-husband. Love is about personality not hair or working legs :)

As a married person in a 7+ years committed relationship, I say yes, kinda. Sure, it's not to criticize on their "bad" choices or something, but you will definitely want the opinion of the one you can trust before making huge changes. Also, if your partner is suddenly going through drastic aesthetic changes it can mean, sure, they were just bored with their old look, but they might be also going through a certain phase as well. In either case it's good to talk about it and you can never jusy ignore it.

Would just depend on the change, I suppose, but changing one's hair is hardly a drastic physical change. Hair grows back. Guy I'm involved with is planning to do something crazy with his hair for haunted house season. I think it's going to look absolutely ridiculous, and I'll likely have to stop myself from laughing, but ultimately it's his hair, he can do what he wants with it, and I'm not going to love him any less just because he did his hair crazy for a while.

I question your definition of "drastic physical change," honestly. It's hair. It grows back. It's not like it's a piercing or a tattoo, which is much harder to undo. No, I'm not going to "consult" before I cut my hair. It's my hair, and I'll do what I want with it. If you come to me in a mature fashion and tell me that you prefer it, say, longer in the back because when we spoon it gets in your mouth if it's too short, I will consider that--but I'm not keeping waist-length hair and the attendant severe headaches I get from that much hair just because you like to run your fingers through it. And if you throw a temper tantrum about it, I'm likely to not even verbally slap you down so much as look at you and say "Get out, we're done."

If her hair is the only thing about her you are truly attracted too then you're with the wrong person.

The point isn't whether or not he loves her hair, it's really that he threw a temper tantrum worthy of a five-year-old over it. That's not just being a "drama queen," it's being pretty damned controlling. "Sweetheart, you know you're not getting much more than cuddles until that's at least shoulder length again, right?" would be one thing. "OH MY GOD, WHAT THE F**K DID YOU DO!?" is only appropriate to having actual body parts removed or finding out about an arrest warrant.

Yeah, unfortunately, not only are there real arses like this, they're common enough that reactions like the one posted here are considered warning signs of potential domestic abuse.

There is also other side of this story: 1) People like to feel attractive and are attracted to others. 2) People like to look nice and be complemented. 3) People like to compete with each other, also to attract their future partner. Let's focus on physical part of human. Imagine you have a partner you lured with your physical appearance and you know somehow what are their preferences (anything - eyes, beard, muscles, weight, height, etc.), but of course they like your overall look (that's why you got in touch at all). Would anyone just freak out if they told they like your appearance and you shouldn't change it, because for them it's just perfect? Anything you were previously aware of they like so much in your body, you would just completely change or remove on purpose to prove they don't own you? Of course, it's your body and no one should force you to do anything with it against you.

Mmm...you do realize that "I didn't really mean it" is the most common phrase in the vocabulary of a verbal/emotional abuser, right? This wasn't just a line or two of "What the hell is this?" which would not be unreasonable. This is a WALL of texts of total temper tantrum. There's a MASSIVE difference between, "I love everything about you just the way it is" and "OH MY F*****G GOD, HOW DARE YOU CHANGE ANYTHING WITHOUT MY PERMISSION!?" There's an equally massive difference between "I don't like that haircut" and "THIS IS A NIGHTMARE." I'm not saying the guy absolutely HAS TO BE an abuser...but I AM saying that this kind of over-the-top reaction needs to be shut down so that it doesn't TURN into abuse, either.
