German Gymnasts Are Taking A Stand Against Sexualization By Wearing Full-Body Suits Instead Of Their Former Revealing Outfits
Sports should be about people’s athletic prowess, marveling at their strength and dexterity, and celebrating breaking the limits of what we thought the human body is capable of. What sports should not be about is putting athletes in suggestive outfits so that the audience can ogle them shamelessly. Well, the Germans have finally had enough, it seems.
This Sunday, Germany’s gymnasts wore full-body suits (also known as unitards) in the women’s qualification at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics to protest the sexualization of their sport. Usually, gymnasts wear leotards that don’t cover the legs. The German team aims to take a stand against the sexualization of women, for comfort, and to help younger athletes feel safer in the sport. They believe that everybody should be able to choose to wear what they’re most comfortable with.
The debates about clothing and uniforms in sports can make you feel like you’re living in a bizarre version of Planet Earth. Bored Panda recently wrote about how the Norwegian women’s beach handball team got fined for wearing shorts instead of bikini bottoms. Meanwhile, there’s an ongoing heated discussion about whether or not to allow afro swimming caps in professional competitions.

Sexual abuse and the objectification of young women and girls in the world of gymnastics is a fact. AP notes that a former USA Gymnastics national team doctor, Larry Nassar, was sent to prison for 176 years for sexually abusing hundreds of gymnasts.
The difference between men’s and women’s uniforms in gymnastics competitions is striking. While women conventionally opt for leotards, men wear clothes that cover more of their bodies.
This isn’t the first time that the German gymnasts have chosen to defy conventions and take a stand against sexualizing women in the sport. They also wore unitards in April, at the European Gymnastics Championships.
The German team was the only one opting for unitards on Sunday. All the other teams wore leotards. Here’s the Brazil 2020 team

Controversy over clothing in sports is nothing new. Very recently, the Norwegian beach handball team got fined for choosing to wear shorts instead of bikini bottoms

However, so far, none of the other teams have chosen to follow in the Germans’ footsteps at the Olympics. And opinions about which uniforms are the most comfortable seem to be split among some athletes.
For instance, legendary American gymnast Simone Biles said in June that she prefers wearing leotards because they make her seem taller. However, she pointed out that she fully supports the idea that gymnasts should be able to choose to wear what they’re most comfortable with.
Here’s how some people reacted to the news about the German gymnasts wearing unitards
However, some internet users had a different opinion about wearing full-body suits
It's sexualization bc they are not given a choice if they feel uncomfortable w a labia slipping out and bc the men that made the rule think they will lose viewership if they don't show their bodies. Let them wear what they want especially w the history of sexual assault in the olympics. This shouldn't even have to be said and for anyone saying this is political FU. A women's right to choose what's best for her body is not political men don't have to wear leotards. They get to be comfortable no one says that's political
For the life of me, I cant think of any men's sports where participation comes with a mandatory Brazillian wax.
Load More Replies...I hope more female athletes will do this in all kinds of sports. Was very happy when I saw the Norwegian team protesting those sexist dress rules.
Pleasingly on organisation has expressed support in pressing for a change in the rules (which shouldn't have existed in the first place)
Load More Replies...I find it hard to believe when someone talked about "It's about protesting more than athletic prowess". Politics and protest have been a part of the Olympics since before I was born. And calling people snowflakes for pointing out real issues only highlights their own misogyny and insecurity.
They really show their own historical ignorance when people claim sports and politics are separate.
Load More Replies...I've always wondered how they make it so the leotard doesn't slip between the butt-cheeks. Do they get glued on, normally? Longer pants make a LOT more sense, if you ask me. Same for beach-volleyball (or beach-anything). Who wants sand in their ass-crack!
One of the things I notice when watching women's beach volleyball is how often the players have to adjust their bottoms. They are constantly pulling out wedgies. Like the start of every point, there's the wedgie adjustment. Teeny bikinis are just not practical for that sport. Another one: women's water polo. The amount of times the athletes end up with their breasts exposed because moving an opposing player by grabbing their suit is part of the game play is absolutely not ok. The suits they wear should be designed with that in mind.
Load More Replies...If men are wearing unitards, and the womens uniform requires leotards, then it's because women are being sexualised. If women have uniforms specifying bikini bottoms or high-cut swim suits but men can wear unitards, shorts or trunks, rather than speedos, women are being sexualised. Legs, particularly the upper thighs, are sexualised.
There were a number of questions asked when beach volleyball was introduced to the Olympics, and it was hard not to conclude the reason for it was TV ratings based on a greater sexual appear than, say, shot putting.
Load More Replies...This is awesome! Normalizing more options for the athletes so they can wear what they are most comfortable in, as in, what is physically the most comfortable (I would feel like I had a constant wedgie in some of those bikini cut leotards, not to mention the near constant waxing or shaving necessary to keep pubic hair from being on display!) as well how much skin they are comfortable showing. For some gymnasts, maybe the high-cut leotards makes them feel like they have a better range of motion. For others, I'm sure it feels more freeing not to have to make sure the edges are glued down so that nothing uh slips out. For younger gymnasts I'm sure getting to have a choice would make them feel much more comfortable.
Having been a gymnast in my youth, I can't tell you how welcome a unitard would have been. Leos constantly creep, especially when you're flipping and twisting through the air; if you're not careful, it's up your butt. Not to mention, you have to shave everything because pubic hair shows right through (and sticks out if the leo is cut high at the hip). Worst athletic costume ever.
I am no prude but it is a bit ikky when the young girls are underdressed.
Women have the right to decide for themselves what they like to wear. If they are more comfortable with full-body suits than they shouldn't be forced to wear leotards and vice versa. After all the Olympics aren't about what you wear but about your achievements. Although some perverts may beg to differ.
But they often do NOT have the right to decide for themselves on what to wear.
Load More Replies...Compare Nadia Comaneci's leotard in 1976 vs today's. Hems have crept up quite a bit and it's not needed. I fully support the unitard and the shorts.
There should be no difference between what the men wear and what the women wear in certain sports. The fact that the women's beach volleyball team was fined for not wearing skimpy shorts makes me so angered. The men wear loose fitting t-shirts and shorts. It doesn't affect their play. The women should be able to wear the same.
I did gymnastics at a fairly high level (country level) - those leotards need to be stuck on your cheeks with fashion glue. Super uncomfortable! I hope all athletes get the freedom to amend the outfits to what they would like to wear. I know the skin tightness is for judging purposes as well, so that's within reason.
If you need glue to keep your clothing in the right place while undertaking sport then the clothing really doesn't sound fit for purpose. Wasn't spandex invented in the 1950s? Find it hard to believe that form fitting and manoeuvrability were hampered by lack of good fabric options over the last few decades. Particularly as gymnasts have managed perfectly to produce stunning routines with more covering leotards eg Nadia Comaneci.
Load More Replies...Can we just please for the love of God teach men to stop sexualizing women?
Sexualising of humans by humans is unavoidable, however force and abuse needs to be addressed.
Load More Replies...The guy who said that the leotards were chosen/ designed with freedom of movement in mind! Soooo.... then guys don't have enough freedom of movement? Why don't they wear those things too? How stupid can you get?
I know... surprised the girls can move their arms, with them being covered and all. It is as if stretchy fabric doesn't exist 🤔
Load More Replies...Good for them. If this is done by muslim women or by some muslim countries, for sure this will be labelled as "oppression, backward, uncivilised".
That fine to the Norwegian team so retarded. It's like handing out a fine to a football team for wearing longer socks. It does not enhance performance nor does it hinder opponents.
I hope this continues will all the competitions. Their skill is what's on show not their bodies. The only sport that's on show is body building. Athletes should be able to wear what is comfortable once it doesn't serve as an advantage (which I really can't see happening but I'm saying it nonetheless). Also...men gymnastics wear long pants (can't remember the right term) so there shouldn't even be a discussion.
Exactly. Either both genders have to wear leotards (which would be stupid) or neither of them. The current rules are nothing more then sexism and objectification of women.
Load More Replies...This debate has been going on for some time now in Germany. One of the women reported that photographers shamelessly used their outfit to take pictures of their private areas -because this is what they have to wear so why not take a picture of it? The debate was heated, but as long as it is an outfit that is safe for a certain sport, who cares? It is their body and their decision and no one should feel uncomfortable because maybe decades ago the available material only allowed freedom of movement by cutting down the amount of material over all. It ia not just science that advanced, but also cloth/materials
I mean- some of those gymnasts are kids and they have to wear this crap? Ridiculous.
I can’t imagine trying to do a sport involving flinging my legs around while wearing that narrow crotch bikini. Show some mercy, sports authorities!
There were questions when it was first introduced to the Olympics, and it was hard not to conclude it wa done because of TV ratings.
Load More Replies...Just a while ago, some people think choosing to cover your own body is a symbol of oppression. Hmmm....
I can imagine what's the comment from some people would be like if this is done by a muslim woman. Yeesh!
Load More Replies...I was about to mention the Norwegian team. They have 10 cm (less than 4 inches) to cover their butts. Literally. It's regulation for women to have less than 4 inches of their behinds covered in cloth. They got fined 150 euro each for wearing actual clothes instead of lingerie. The male teams wore long shirts and loose shorts almost down to the knee. It can't be easy to work so hard for the olympics and make a stand, possibly getting disqualified over an outdated sexist rule. I commend all these athletes for it!
For those of you pining for "the good old days" of "non-sexual" leotards, one only has to compare photos of Simone Biles to those of Olga Korbut. Go google Olga Korbut - she's clearly wearing a bra and underwear *under* her leotard and the leotard has hardly any upward angle from the crotch to the hip. No sparkles, no heavy makeup. Pigtails. Fast forward to Simone Biles; sequins, sparkly makeup, the entire crease between her legs and trunk showing whenever she does a split, half of each cheek hanging out, and always adjusting the leg openings after she finishes an apparatus. There's nothing unique about either one of them in their time - I just chose two well-known gymnasts of two very different eras.
If there's no competitive advantage athletes should wear what they want. Simple as that.
I wouldn't exactly say wear what they want. It still is a uniform. However, the group should not be wearing clothing that makes them feel exposed, uncomfortable or embarrassed.
Load More Replies...Just think of how it feels doing those moves in a leotard, it must hurt, cutting into their crotch, Ouch! . Leave them alone and stop this sexism
I can't believe that people have the nerve to say that sexual harassment in sport isn't an issue! Remember Larry Nassar, team doctor for the United States women's national gymnastics team? There's a whole Me Too-Movement of women in professional sports because the situation is so horrible (e.g. look up Me Too and Austrian Skiers). Many of the women are young and quite vulnerable, and they need to be supported to protect themselves. Allowing them to dress in a way that's less sexualizing is a step in the right direction. Breaking this culture of bagatellization is another one.
I don't know if this is real or just in my head, but it seemed to me that in the TV coverage of the women's beach volleyball, the cameras spent a lot of time lingering, or even zooming in, on butt shots, especially when the players were bending over. I didn't notice that as much with the men in their baggy shorts. It's sort of hard to argue that beach volleyball is the one sport where bikini bottoms sort of make sense, but still... I don't see the men jumping around in Speedos.
Also, I'm in love with the designs of he unitards! Especially the long sleeved ones with the diamond pointy details! That "slit" in the leg with the triangle lines is such a gorgeous detail and beautiful use of positive and negative space.
When you denounce revealing clothing in general as sexualization, then you automatically defame all women who feel comfortable in revealing clothing - surely no one wants that. Women should be free to make their own choices without being judged for what they wear. Whether they want to keep themselves covered or reveal more.
The difference is about choice. Before, it was required that females wore leotards, there was no choice, and obviously some women won't feel comfortable with it. Some women will, and that's fine that's their choice. Some won't, and the should be able to wear unitards instead.
Load More Replies...I think it's disingenuous for that one person to say this is a protest to "make the sport less about looks"... I would love if gymnastics (and relatedly, figure skating) totally separated themselves from the aesthetic pomp and circumstance that surrounds it, but this clearly isn't about that. Even these desexualized outfits are emblazened with a ton of utterly athletically unnecessary design choices. Does bedazzling swirls on your uniform secretly make you jump higher? I would much prefer if Olympians, rather than being made to wear overly stylized and often sexualized uniforms designed by people who frequently don't even play sports, were only beholden to wear certain colours, and could choose for themselves whatever style of sportswear they found most comfortable for their sport. I don't see any good reason whatsoever why that's NOT what's done. Aterall, the Olympics started with no clothes allowed at all!
Allowing female athletes the option to wear shorts, unitards, etc. is a no-brainer. I don't know anyone who disagrees with this. Male, female, liberal, conservative, moderate, religious, non-religious, all races. This is probably the only thing that everyone has agreed on in quite some time.
Wear what you feel com in! This gies for all genders ❤️
I used to think they wore leotards to make it easier to move their legs. I didn't even know this was an issue, and I'm glad this was brought to light. If longer pants are what makes them more comfortable, they should definitely wear those
Can move their arms in all directions and many ways though so that can't be the reason.
Load More Replies...Seriously, only perverts care what they wear. Normal people wouldn't care if the completed in sweat pants
Regardless of how WE feel there are plenty of perverts watching for all the wrong reasons. Kudos to the shorts & unitards.
There's a comment above that complains it's "about protesting and making political statements." They should look at the history of the Olympics if they think that's new. It has been going on since the very beginning of the modern Olympics.
Let's face it, the Olympics have been going downhill for a long time, no matter how many 'new' sports they have to attract people - which is a big fail. It is too big, too expensive an accomplishes nothing. And as the 'uniforms' for women show, really sexist
"But this just enforces the idea that women need to cover up in order to avoid sexual harassment. Surely they are not the problem; a leotard isn't exactly obscene." Thanks for your input, Alice, but I think the point was that they were made to uncover by tradition or whatever. They are not strolling into a bar. They are performing in front of a world of witnesses. They should be allowed to cover up when convention made women wear less.
They should have a choice of what to wear as long as it doesn't affect the sport. And there don't really have to be rules against it negatively affecting the sport because the athletes have enough natural incentive not to inhibit themselves.
They can move the rest of their body - arms and torso aren't inhibited by the stretchy fabric. Doesn't inhibit the men either. The ability to create extremely stretchy costumes has existed for quite some time and yet the leotards got smaller.
Load More Replies...I always thought it was disgusting that 3/4th's of the women's bottoms were exposed. It would be like having the men wear nothing but something to cover just their genitals! I suppose this will be deleted!! Maybe someone might get to read it.
It's a progress that they were allowed to wear full - body suits. Next Olympics women gymnasts will be dressed in thongs, and gymnasts will comply.
My only concern would be overheating and increased chances for dehydration. BUT I certainly approve that it should be an individual athletes choice.
I know it's not the done thing, but can I just interject here and point out those German uniforms are absolutely STUNNING? Every other team looks monotonous by comparison; how on earth is this NOT a workout wear brand yet?
I know it's not the done thing, but can I just interject that the German ladies uniforms are absolutely STUNNING and make everything else look boring and monotonous? How is this NOT a workoutwear brand yet?!
in case y'all missed that "progressive for women" German flava https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sfm0jgmXQMQ&t=3s
anyone who thinks a one piece for gymnastics is "sexy" should have their head examined. *SIDE NOTE: Germany's "GROUND BREAKING stand on SEXUALIZATION" also includes their coach FACE SLAPPING and SHAKING an athlete before she steps into the ring to compete (IN FULL VIEW). That's right, he slaps HER FACE ... and well "me too"... but their gymastics team is in a longer unitard (face palm)
It's not about sexualisation it's about the women not having a choice to cover up if they feel uncomfortable. If you don't want to expose yourself that much for whatever reason you shouldn't be forced to it's not necessarily a sexualisation issue. They no longer want to wear the bikin bottoms simple their body their choice nothing to do with sex or sporting ability
Actually ,Islam came to keep women away from any danger and being half naked is a danger so Islam ordered women to cover themselves with clothes that are not clear or tight but unfortunately many people don’t read about Islam 🌷
I decidedly stopped gymnastics because of the clothes, i do not like moving so much and having the crotch part accidentially slide and flash. With todays materials, no, no excuse as “ it hinders movement” to not expose your crotch and butt area . And i do not believe for a second that no one sees this in a sexual way. Phh, wearing small panties in a sport like beachvolley is just so.. almost naked. Should not be forced on anyone. That is not a political statement, just freedom no matter your ideas about money, environment, government etc,
This is so stupid... A unitard is infinitely more revealing because it is like a glaze of spandex and the reality is it's not what you wear it's how you are asked to move in order to perform the routine... If gymnasts were asked to gyrate or pole dance then we would be having a conversation... But having trained both volleyball and track and field at sufficiently high levels (drafted for olympics team), there is no way that this is about sexualization they just want to stand out... When you are playing a sport that intensely the only thing you are thinking about is efficacy and maximum comfort.. a unitard and a one piece for someone like me who has a long torso is equally tedious to get in and out of .. and since unitards have been trendy this spring I can tell you first hand you overheat working out in them and I have gone back to my short shorts and a crop top within 5 minutes. I don't get this at all it's a moot point..
Or in fact the original 'leotard' was far more like the Norwegian beach handball team's shorts. Not to mention that the lower part of the 'modern' body tights coming up diagonally across the fullest part of the buttock is really ugly, Ideally the lower part suit come across at the the folds between the buttock and the upper thigh, to accentuate the beautiful lines of a healthy female body. We do NOT need half of the pubis showing either. As they are now they are simply prurient. They don't enhance the appearance or the movement of the wearers.
The real trouble is with the 'minimisation' of the costume. The lower half now becomes not much more than a sanitary napkin. The original "leotard' covered the top of the thighs. As worn ballet dancers they are worn with tights. http://www.olympicleotards.com/leotard-history
I think the team should pick their out fit. Everyone else can but out. If it is not about sexualizing the women, then why were they fined for wearing shorts?
If it’s not specialization then explain why the male athletes are covered up like they’re going to church, & the women’s outfits get smaller & smaller. Even in daily life women’s clothes are tight & tiny. - still not convinced? Name a male superhero that isn’t essentially wearing a burka; covered head to toe, & then line up those female heroes & look at the “outfit” they’re given. It’s a man’s world people. Given the option & confidence women would be wearing comfortable clothing that doesn’t leave everything hanging out.
I literally never even knew this was an issue. Who actually gives a s**t what they wear? Just be good at the flippety stuff, isn't that the only thing that matters? And losing viewership cuz of their outfits? What? Who are they even talking about here??
I believe the olympics in ancient times were done naked. There was likely a good reason for this as the materials for clothing at the time would had inhibited their performance. The same goes for this, the revealing clothing used by the gymnast in the past was likely due to the material would have inhibited their performance. These days they should wear what they want as we have developed materials that free movement for the likes of these gymnast. The women’s beach volleyball is a completely different matter as it is a modern sport and has encouraged skimpy clothing for ratings.
Regardless of your opinion on beauty, you are right, it's THEIR choice.
