When parents are expecting a baby, the most important thing to most of them is obviously for the child to be born healthy and live a happy life. However, some parents put a lot of importance on what the sex of the baby will be. They will buy clothes and decorate the room accordingly. Although gender norms are starting to fade and parents try to not enforce a specific color or activity on their future baby, there are still people who do that.
Some people even make a really big thing out of finding out what the baby's sex will be. They organize parties that are specifically dedicated to revealing if they will have a boy or a girl. And these parties can get really cringey. In this list, you will find some of the bizarre ways people find out what they're having and some concerning cake ideas.

Blursed Gender Reveal
If you think that gender reveal parties are an old tradition, you’d be wrong as the party that is considered to be the first one took place in 2008. A blogger named Jenna Karvunidis made a post about the special cake she baked which, once cut, revealed the sex of the baby as the icing was supposed to be either pink, meaning she would be having a girl, or blue, meaning she would be having a boy.
Even though Jenna was the first to have a gender reveal party, she doesn’t like what it has become. She said numerous times she regrets “inventing” it and in a Facebook post has said, “I've felt a lot of mixed feelings about my random contribution to the culture. It just exploded into crazy after that. Literally—guns firing, forest fires, more emphasis on gender than has ever been necessary for a baby.”
My Husband's Idea Of A Gender Reveal Cake
Bored Panda reached out to Jenna and we learnt that she is being a busy bee: “I am in my 3rd year of law school and through that, I do things like volunteer at a name change clinic helping people who are trans to legally change their name and pronouns. I’m also a Girl Scout leader, Vice President of my Women’s Law Association, Treasurer of my Environmental Law Society, co-founded Sierra Madre For Racial Justice in my community, and I was the official host of the Pasadena Women’s March last year. I also have 3 daughters and love to paint giant paintings.”
People Spelling It "Jaxcshyn"
This Gender Reveal
We wanted to know more about the original gender reveal party and we got to know why Jenna came up with the idea in the first place. The party Jenna made was just a simple reveal of the cake icing. She told us, “I was just trying to get my family excited about my baby. I was estranged from my parents at age 17 and I haven’t seen them in about 10 years now, but there was a short time around the time I got married and had my first baby that we were on better terms. I was trying to get them to be involved, so I threw a party to reveal the gender of the baby thinking that would get them excited about me.”

Load More Replies...And then their female child is born, and she plays football and owns a farm XD.
AND does ballet and owns a pearl-handled pistol because I don't know what is wrong with these people, thinking anyone has to be constrained by their gender like this! You probably wouldn't wear a tiara while mucking out the pigs, though. Could drop it in the mud.
Load More Replies...I like blue and not pink, I like hiking, kayaking, volcanos, glaciers, and opera, but I don't care about cars. what sex am I?
As a Man I can happily say that I would rather have the cupcake, ballet, tractor and pearls. I've no real need for a tiara but could use a nice new tractor, Guns are for stupid people, sport is boring and cakes are better than American muffins.
Quickest way to tell the world you're not ready for a gender non-conforming child
All those parents I wish upon one of those kids that is exactly the opposite at what they assigned to them. A tiara-wearing son, a pistol-toting girl, a daughter in the women's superbowl and a ballet-dancing boy.
This makes me so annoyed. As a woman and a tomboy, with stereotypical "guy interests", I despise the crap that is shoved onto girls and the stuff I was expected to like, wear and act as. Still have people expect things of me just cause I'm female. It starts before you're even born.
None of it matters. Kid will be dead by gun accident before it reaches the age of majority.
Gender stereotypes. Will show this pictures to my students to teach them about about gender stereotypes
Um...I drove my dad's tractor, helping with our land upkeep from the age of 9 until I was in my 20s. I also have a vagina.
Tractors? I'm a grown woman! I work on a farm! You won't ever see me wearing a f**k'n tiara!😡 I also played football in high school!
Man, people really love their alliteration. I mean, I'm an English teach who likes some good literary devices, but yikes!
PISTOLS OR PEARLS!? Wait, nevermind, I live in the south, this is normal.
Where I come from, the country girls work just as hard or harder than the boys
Child is still in the womb, but that doesn't stop the harmful stereotypes. I wore pearls to sharp shooting competitions, so eff this damaging BS.
POV: You just came out of childbirth only to find out that the baby is actually a tractor
Someone Dyed Their Dog Blue For A Gender Reveal And It Ran Away
She also told The Guardian that she'd had several miscarriages previously and when she finally got pregnant and the pregnancy lasted to the point at which she could know the baby’s sex, she wanted to celebrate that, but people who wanted to recreate the party started putting emphasis on the wrong aspects of it.
She told Buzzfeed, “I just feel like there are a thousand details more important about a person than their gender. It’s a bad detail to hang on for a baby, and just because it’s the first thing we know about our kids, it’s not the most important by far."
Gender-Reveals Are Starting To Get Ridiculous
That's It, No More Gender Reveal Parties
Also, it is worth mentioning that even though the party is always said to be a gender reveal, it is actually the biological sex that is revealed. Jenna wrote in the mentioned Facebook post, “PLOT TWIST, the world's first gender-reveal party baby is a girl who wears suits!”
Jenna also told Glamour, “She has her opinions about there being many genders, and she is informing me about things. She was biologically born a female, and she is still ‘she’ and ‘her’ and says she’s a girl, but she is still doing things her way.”
We asked if she was the one that coined the term, but actually, when she was having the party, she “called it a 'peep show' because the cake was shaped like a bird.” Jenna also added, “Anyway, about the party itself—that was 2008 and I didn’t know the things I know now. Gender is a construct. Learn more, do better, I guess!”
Gender Reveal Redneck Style.
Great. Pollute the air your pregnant wife is breathing. What a fantastic idea.

Marijuana-Themed Gender Reveal Cake
When asked why she thinks gender reveal parties are so popular and why people care so much, Jenna had a guess. She said, “I think people care about these events because pregnancy can be a lonely time. You love this little baby so much, but then the parents realize their support systems are lacking. Parties bring people together. So maybe people are trying to set their tribes.”

I find myself rooting for the alligator. Wildlife does not exist for your entertainment!
Gender reveal parties are receiving more and more criticism because they are often sexist and they get crazier by the day. After these parties, many people just leave confetti and it creates litter, and there have also been cases where the parties caused wildfires, cars have exploded, and the scale of these parties for some has reached that of a wedding.
So this list shows the cringey side of the parties and that people should relax a bit and focus on other things that are more important about the baby. But tell us, what do you think of gender reveal parties? Do you think they can be done with taste? Or do you think they are completely unnecessary? Also, don’t forget to upvote the most cringey photos!
Gender Reveals Are Stupid

From The Gender Reveal To The Fondant, This Whole Thing Feels Pointless And Unnecessary
Pretty Sure This Belongs Here... 90% Of Gender Reveals Are Trashy Af.
Can Gender Reveal Get Any Worse? Yes.
I feel the need to point out two things. (1) Most cis folks think that gender reveal parties are abysmally stupid and unnecessary. (2) Princess Leia was a Jedi.
Colour code you children so people know what their genitalia look like.
I imagine that most of the people that order the cakes with glitter, bows, and tutus versus guns, trucks and basketball are the kind of people that follow very strict gender norms, and would not want a daughter that drives a truck or a son that wants to dance. Am I right?
The incredibly sexist cakes are awful, yes, but hey, at least they don't endanger animals or people or cause massive wildfire so I guess that's a win ?
Yes, not burning down hundreds of square miles of forest is definitely a bonus.
Load More Replies...Who cares what your child's gender is? Just be glad you have a healthy child! And, no, you don't need to know to "buy things" ------ diapers are diapers are diapers.
"But you have to choose pink or blue diapers!" smh.
Load More Replies...The whole pink/blue thing is really strange, originally it was actually pink for boys and blue for girls?? I dont know why those colours though 🤔
Yep, because pink represented strength and blue represented beauty, if I'm correct
Load More Replies...to be fair, gender reveal parties were ridiculous from the start
As are 'push prizes', Tori Spelling needs more jewelry? Just getting baby and mom through healthy is enough.
Load More Replies...I need a gender cake that says: "None of your f***ing business and maybe it'll change throughout their life, so who cares?"
With all that writing, you'd need a bigger cake...so it's win win :)
Load More Replies...The one with the baby butt and baby feet is exactly what we had at my SILs baby shower. There was no gender reveal, just yummy, yummy baby butt cake with butter cream icing.
I loved the baby butt cake. I took a pict of my son in that exact position. It's blurry, but my favorite!
Load More Replies...Maybe you downvoters don’t get my point: the gender reveal hoopla became a thing as a reaction against the idea that there are not simply two gender identities. These are the same people who scream “UNDER GOD” during the pledge of allegiance.
Load More Replies...Eh, whilst the stereotypes for gender are stupid, at least these people here aren't burning down forests. A cake with colored sweets/candy/frosting/sponge hidden inside is alright by me in comparison.
When I was waiting for the birth of my little one nearly 32 years ago now, we didn't have these "gender reveal" jobbies. I had no interest in what sex my baby was going to be, and bought n knitted everything in pale green, lemon n white! Seriously, I was so deadly scared that she'd have some sort of disability cos when I first got pregnant I was working with anaesthetic agents every day, that I really did not give a stuff about her sex, I just wanted to know she was alright... And she was, still is, lol.
Exactly. What does it matter? People react with joy regardless. Plus, most people aren't really bothered about what baby others are having.
Load More Replies...I don't get "gender reveal parties" at all. Seriously, when did that become a thing? Not even touching on the current gender issues going around, who cares what sex your baby is? The parents and immediate family. Did you really need a party for it? How about you celebrate if the baby and it's mother come through healthy and alive.
Sadly it's spreading. We never used to have baby showers here in the UK, now most people have them. I had never heard of gender reveals until a few years ago, now I hear of people having those too. They are not as trashy as the ones you US folks have to contend with but most of the folk having them are sadly buffoons who single-handedly manage to keep the stereotypes going. I just hope their kids learn to rebel at an early age. I definitely agree with the right to divorce your parents if they are 1st class buffoons like these people.
In America the sonographer will write down if you're having a boy or a girl so that the reveal is a surprise for the parents too ..over here they won't do that.. my sister had a reveal party but only because she was expecting twins. It wasn't ott either.
Load More Replies...Nothing says, I am going to emotionally damage this child, like a gender reveal party.
Colour code you children so people know what their genitalia look like.
We had a boy. We're expecting a girl soon. We just straight up tell people the gender if asked. I never understoid the point in gender reveal or baby shower or whatever else people do. The baby isn't born yet. The parties are not for it, but for the parents whatever reasons. I just really don't get the point.
I'm a father but I'm just curious why the interest in the sex of the baby? Does it matter what it is i love my kid and don't give a hoot and a holler what it is. So why the heck they are so concerned with it?
Mm yes because girls don’t play basketball, drive, become police officers, or drive tractors.
If I were becoming a parent, I would order a cake with a rainbow inside. It wouldn't matter to me what the gender is.
See these are comical and funny. A few in our area involved colored explosives and maimed partygoers. At least one gender reveal party causes a massive forest fire and killed a firefighter. Seriously who gives a s**t about your kids gender?
My cousin was pregnant. After a big scan, where they also check fo a gender, we called and she told me: It is a boy. And it was done.
My baby had a green Harry Potter themed room and mostly black, white and green clothes, so...eh.
just why? Why do you need a gathering and a f****n drumroll to announce what gender your baby is going to be?
Gender reveal parties always feel like people just need another reason to party and get attention. Just tell people you know what it's gonna be and get over with it. No need for a party
There's been a few times that the info was wrong. A couple believing it was a girl, upon delivery, yep, the baby had outdoor plumbing. Surprised a few family members for sure, A neighbor even had the ob doc announce "it's a girl" the father looks down and replies "want to guess again?" a second son was born, his wife was so excited for those 3 seconds, but regrouped, as a healthy baby is the best conclusion.

Genuine question, are these predominantly an American thing? As an Aussie, I have never encountered them before
I want to have a REAL gender reveal party, where you cut into the cake that I baked and it’s F*CKIN GREEN BECAUSE I DON’T HAVE A GENDER WOOHOO
the only gender reveal party I've been to simply had a box full of pink balloons that released into our living room- these folks are out of their damn minds
I take enormous issue with this whole post. How twisted does one have to be to immediately associate their unborn son with guns?
OMG I'm so glad these aren't a thing in my country. At least not yet...
Maybe I'm old but when I was younger, parents were just happy to have a healthy baby. It's kind of ironic that those days had definitely more systemic sexism going around than now, yet now, everyone is obsessed with gender.
I don't care for gender reveals. Aside from all that, many of the cake artists have done great jobs in their decorating. (The actual work itself, not the topic.)
Guess what you're having!!!... A Baby!!!... SURPRISE!!!! The gender will not be revealed until the child can decide for themselves. AND... LEAVE THE ANIMALS ALONE!!!!
I have absolutely no problem with people doing this. As long as it's safe and no body gets hurt. There's nothing wrong with it. If done right.
This is obviously an American thing. I have never seen or experienced this nonsense from neither straights or others in my country or any other country I've lived in
Idk, I'm not bothered by gender/sex reveal parties and having one doesn't automatically make you sexist/a bad parent. I've always enjoyed them and the kids grow up to do their own thing. It's just something fun to do for some people. The echo chamber on here is wild sometimes.
I'm gay and have no interest in ever having a baby (I wouldn't mind fostering or adopting) but I always thought it would be funny to throw a "gender reveal party" gussied up like a real one but the pinata or whatever had rainbow confetti and a drop down banner that says "It doesn't matter! Let's eat cake!" My sister has had 2 biological kids and both times she didn't learn their sex ahead of time and when anyone asked she'd just say "it's a baby! :)" specifically so people wouldn't get them genderfied stuff. I think what the mom in the article says is true--pregnancy and new adulthood can be really lonely, especially if most of your friends aren't parents themselves, and it can be nice to get everyone together to celebrate a new life. But just celebrate the new life! Eat some cake that doesn't look stupid! Enjoy the fact that your pregnancy is going well! Every person in this world is complex and contains multitudes, it's never either/or.
People here are WAY too uptight over a bit of fun. Do some of these things go too far? Sure. Does it mean that the people involved are some sort of monsters that won't allow their child to choose their own path? No. They have no way of knowing which way the child will choose to go so are simply going with the way the vast majority do. Again it is all in fun and has no horrible agenda. Lighten up folks!
My favorite gender reveal? The Geico commercial. A man making a collect call. First name Bob. Last name? Wehadababyitsaboy.
How much more sexist can this possibly get? The whole concept behind gender reveals irks me, your kid might choose to change the biological sex identity that you're... celebrating'. (If those tacky cakes and tractors can be counted as such.)
the duck cake is kinda cute though, but these gender reveals are getting really stupid
Wow... I thought we were on our way to get rid of what is for boys and what for girls. Good luck with these kind of parents. And why is it so important to let people know what gender will be born? I will never understand these things.
In India , knowing ur baby's gender before its born , is a crime. Phew !

You can practically taste the sexist, toxic, heteronormative binary. I feel bad for all of these children.
The gender reveal for my daughter was a nurse with a wand, at the hospital. None of us ever felt cheated.
I tried having a gender reveal for one of my children. We packed half a dozen blue helium balloons in a cardboard box and opened it up in the living room with all our family in virtual attendance via Facetime. As you might expect, no one was that impressed by the balloons. Oh well! Congratulations to all the expectant parents.
Funfact: boys used to be dressed in pink. Because red was considered a man's colour (strong, vibrant active etc etc) and blue was feminine (passive, in the bakcground blablablabla). So the light, child version of red was pink.
When I see that some pro have so few problems and so much money to waste they do that, it makes me sad.
I agree as long as they are okay with their kid liking either boy or girl stuff. And being who they want to be. I think people do jump the gun and assume that people that do gender reveal parties are going to treat their kids on equally somehow. And I'm sure there are people that do. But anyone with sense understands that there are many people who do gender reveals and will treat their children just fine and equally. Also some people want to see it as malicious and honestly there's really nothing you can do about how they see things. We can just hope that people realize that it isn't always like that. If they don't then that's their choice. You can't force people to understand and be wise.
