I had a vasectomy and the doc said the same thing. I said I'd adopt because my genetics aren't great. I can't imagine a woman getting away with that, but it's f'ng wrong, no matter who, etc.

Surgeon that I'd never met before refused to tie mine after my 2nd and having the plan for this with my regular provider all over the medical record since it was a planned C-section anyway (2 birds, 1 stone, right?) I love my 3rd child, but that is NOT the point. The point is he had no right to decide my life for me because I "might change my mind." Not that it matters, but I did not change my mind. #3 was unplanned. Loved and cared for and cherished, but not the plan.

Yep. I've got a doctor who won't tie my tubes because I have no kids and no interest in having kids. But I 'might change my mind' or 'meet a guy who wants kids'. Some fictional guy has more rights to my body than I do.

My ex gynecologist not only refused to sterilise me but he lied about another surgery that I had. It turns out that pregnancy after that operation is extremely dangerous and is never recommended unless you sterilise the woman. But for many, including my doctor, a dead woman is better than an infertile one. Luckily i found a decent one after that.

Would not tie my tubes after 1 child but had no issue giving him a vasectomy. Because it was HIS decision

This happened to me too!! Then I walked back into the office 4 months later pregnant again! By an abusive man who tried to keep me trapped and pregnant. (Poked holes in condoms took what he wanted from me w/o consent etc.) Waddaya think now Dr Steve!!!

This annoys me so much too. Sorry mate, I'm the one who'll have to carry and give birth. My body my ultimate choice. If some guy wants children and I don't, he can go jump and find someone else.

The same doctor who told my friend that if she got pregnant it would kill her (malformed uterus) refused to tie my friend's tubes because her (hypothetical) husband might want them some day.

What if it's none of your business?

Tell them you need a hysterectomy. They love doing those.

You can't just go and ruin the primary/only (choose your own level of insanity) purpose of a woman like that! /s

Gynea here. You know how many patients decided years after sterilization that they want another child after all? You know the success rate of reversal? You know the cost of IVF? Did you know that you have the option of Long Acting Reversible Contraceptives that is just as effective as sterilization, but REVERSIBLE? Yeah... that's why. We have more than one patient, and keeping in mind the other cases and heartache we had to deal with. Hope that puts it in perspective to all who thinks we are dense or taking away your autonomy.

The idea that a woman who is sure that she will never be pregnant (for any reason) will change her mind after meeting some man is infuriating

I don't know. But until then, we keep fighting, keep having these discussions, support our fellow women, hold female politicians accountable to the betterment of women's rights, and teach our sons to be better than previous generations.

My daughters first Gyno wouldn't give her a copper iud bc she may have kids someday. Absolutely ridiculous. She got the procedure at planned parenthood. This is why the republicans want to defund them bc they give women autonomy and healthcare wo control.

I have yet to hear of any women who have NOT been told that. It seems to be pretty universal when dealing with male doctors.

Unfortunately, this is so common that often going somewhere else results in the same thing. I’ve had 5 OBGYNs deny the procedure with the reasons that “I might change my mind” or “I might find a man who wants kids.” I have endometriosis and only a .1% chance of having a kid. The doctors know this.
