“Future Shock” Is Real: Photographer Downloads Video-Overlays, Prints Photos, Wonders Why They Don’t Work

Technology is always steadily advancing; no revelations there. So it’s perhaps not so surprising that things which were pure science fiction for our parents and grandparents have become just day-to-day reality for our generation.

But the gap between technological fantasy and reality becomes smaller every year. Now even some things that seemed totally far-fetched only a short time ago are under development too. And if last year’s sci-fi drama is already starting to seem like this year’s documentary movie, it’s understandable that some of us might get confused about precisely what modern technology can and cannot achieve.

Take paper for example. As technologies go, you don’t get much more old-school than this. And after over two thousand years of use, surely it’s about time that the humble sheet of paper got a technological upgrade? Paper 2.0 if you like.

Well, it seems that some people think it already has.

Aside from being a photographer, I also run Editing Resources by Lilia Alvarado. A company producing tutorials, Lightroom presets, Photoshop actions and animated overlays for photographers and videographers. One of our best selling products is the Video Overlays Collection, which lets you add moving effects such as falling snow, rain, dust, leaves, and soap bubbles to both video and still images. These overlays are great for turning regular digital photos into animated screensavers, for posting on social media, and for displaying in digital picture frames.

Recently though, we were disappointed to receive a complaint from one of our customers. Apparently, the effects weren’t working: “when I printed the pictures the snow wasn’t moving as advertised.”

Well, no, obviously it wouldn’t work if you printed it out LOL.

It’s easy to laugh, but with the rate of technological progress increasing so quickly now, perhaps we’re all a little disoriented these days.

I mean, even in the 1970s people were worried that technology was advancing too fast for human society to keep up. “Future shock” they called it: too much change in too short a time. And because things that were impossible only a short while ago often become a reality now, it’s easy to imagine that literally anything can be achieved today – no matter how fanciful.

Who knows though, while we’re all giggling at the idea that anyone could believe their photos would still be animated once printed out on paper, maybe somebody somewhere is developing exactly such a project.

Just remember, you saw it here first!

Great article. It is difficult to imagine that technological concept. But as time was on, and technology develops, it is not impossible to imagine overlay effects printed off. This is a very interesting content thanks.

That is crazy that someone would have a complaint like that, it doesn't surprise me, nowadays people are confused and disconnected from the outside world.

I can only imagine the person being from the future where this technology already exists or he/ she must be from a place where technology is not very developed where they are greatly influenced by SCFI movies and shows that their expectations are unreal at this point in time! Regardless, your images are amazing!
