RELATED:

Daniel Czapiewski turned architecture on its head when he designed a rather unique and strange building in 2007. Poland’s ‘upside down house’ became the first of its kind on the planet. And since then, several others have popped up (or down) around the world. Czapiewski’s work aimed to teach visitors about the country’s political history, and its relationship with communism. The architect’s message: life in Communist Poland turned the world upside down.

As Atlas Obscura reports, “The upside down house is essentially a fully furnished home like any other, but took much longer than normal to build as workers kept becoming disoriented, forcing them to stop work. It wasn’t even built simply upside down, but on a tilt as well, essentially eliminating the comfort of a reliable, flat surface.”

Visitors enter the house by climbing through the attic window, and are able to walk around on the ceiling once inside. The interior is furnished with 1970s decor and a television shows propaganda from that era. Many have reported feeling dizzy and a bit confused after visiting the tourist attraction.

My gf is Polish and there is only one difficult letter to pronounce in her name - most (non-Polish) people seem to get it wrong. Even worse, there is a short form of her name and some people fail to pronounce that correctly including a former school teacher - not once, but every time, despite us pronouncing it correctly every time we spoke to her!

My last name is Polish, my parents got so sick of non-Polish people pronouncing it wrong, they just changed the spelling.

According to the story, my great-grandfather showed up in America and went to the immigration office. They asked his name. Mazurkiewicz, of course. The immigration agent replies, "Welcome to America, Mr. Miller..."

Pretty rich coming from an offficial if a country with geographical names such as Mississippi, Punxsutawney or - and this is hilarious because of its proximity to "Mazurkiewicz" - Missouri.

I can’t imagine Europeans wearing that to be honest. We just don’t care that much about stuff like cursing. It’s still funny to me that the US even censors TV and radio. Must be annoying to listen to a song and hear “beep” all the time.

And that is actually a big problem here as Catholic Curch has a big sway over our politics and our lives in general, especially when it comes to older generations. As a result our people often are very unfriendly toward LGBT people, we have religion in schools (though it's no longer obligatory, yay!), our abortions are mostly illegal, day-after pills hard to obtain and only with prescription and many other Church-morals-related problems.

I worked with a factory full of old Polish women in the 70s and I loved pickle season. Each one tried to outdo the other, all I had to do was bring in a jar. "SHE doesn't know pickles, bring me a jar and I'll give you real pickles"!

Actually, Poland's legal drinking age is 18 - higher than in many Western European countries. But it is true that many of us try alcohol earlier (quite often with our parents knowledge as they believe that it's better to try it in controlled environment than get unconscious drunk during a party) and we have rather liberal attitude toward drinking

Not so true any more, a lot of German roads are a shambles, and living near the border to Poland, means I'm there quite a lot, and they have had good roads for quite a long time now.

Tbf we don't have too many things to smile about. In general, when you talk with a Pole and suddenly they start smiling - you screwed up, especially if the smile is not changing. We start to smile a lot when we're angry and/or upset but social situation doesn't allow us to show it - it's a defense mechanism of sort.

You can cure almost everything with Amol. It's used internally, externally, you can drink it, rub it, inhale it whatever you prefer. If Amol didn't heal you, you're probably dying.

While we have a lot of painful history with neighbouring countries - I guess the same may be said about most if not all other countries. But we like to show our pain and suffering, and martyrdom, and we love our failed uprisings (almost all of them failed) - to the point where a big part of our culture is built around it. And it isn't a good thing as it makes us paranoid and often makes economical/social/any-other-kind growth much harder (as we distrust everything reccomended or preferred by other countries and often prefer to i.e. pay financial fines that agree with this or that "because this evil EU told us so"). I blame XIX century and its poets as during this time the idea of Poland being a martyr started being very popular.
