Commercialism has something to do with the holidays running together, but I think abandoning the liturgical calendar also has something to do with it. If you have two or three fasting days or feasting days every week, you don't have to fill your calendar with the scant few observations you have left. Eastern Orthodox readers - please chime in to confirm!

I am not a trustworthy cook (everything is either perfect and delicious...or simply horrid). So I'll volunteer to bring drinks or silverware/plates/napkins, table decorations, etc. Something I can't screw up that still lets me share the load.
