In a way, this post is basically the movie version of shower thoughts. Bear with me. After Twitter user @jazz_inmypants asked people to share bothering movie details that aren't common knowledge, his thread received quite a few interesting insights. For example, Grease (1978) might be described as a story that teaches you to change yourself until other people like you. And Belle's (Beuty and the Beast (1991)) neighbors are probably doing something shady if the village can support such an extensive bookstore when she's the only reader and doesn't even pay. The tweet by @jazz_inmypants has already received over 30K likes and 1K comments, many of which filmmaking students could definitely rework into term papers.

Altogether, a film can seem incredibly complicated, but the reasoning behind every decision nearly always comes down to how it is working with the story and how it is affecting the viewer. With that in mind, the New York Film Academy has prepared some tips for reviewing a film and coming up with your own insights.

Watch it. "Once is necessary twice is preferable," the academy wrote. "Taking notes is also a good idea and will help the writing process by making it easy to refer to your in-the-moment thoughts and reactions."

Express your initial thoughts and support your criticism. "Professional reviewers do not shy away from telling their readers whether they thought the movie was good bad or indifferent, and in fact readers come to rely on those reviewers whose tastes reflect their own when deciding whether or not to spend their time and money. Professional reviewers also have watched a lot of movies and can express why and how they came to their criticism. Be sure to back up your thoughts with specifics–a disappointing performance, a ridiculous plot, beautiful cinematography, difficult material that leaves you thinking, and so on."
Evaluate the acting. "Many casual filmgoers will be inspired to see a movie if a favorite actor is in it, so you should probably spend a little space talking about the performances: seasoned actor in a new kind of role, brilliant performance from a rising star, excellence despite a lackluster script, dynamics in an ensemble, and so much more can be said about the actors in any given film."
Directing, cinematography, special effects... This is where your inner film geek can really shine. Consider the highlights or missteps of directors, cinematographers, costume designers and CGI magicians. What worked, what surprised, what fell short of expectations, are all great questions to address.

Danny actually puts way more effort into changing himself- joining the track team and putting in a lot of work- and when he shows up in his Letter jacket he gets teased for it instead of praised. I don't know why people get so worked up because Sandy changed her outfit. They both proved they were willing to make sacrifices for one another.

wow. young girlz do not get much these days. I loved that movie since it came out the first time around. I have re-watched it many times over the DECADES. and nope. it's about not being cool to find the one you love. but teens are mixed up and think they should. you totally missed the moral of the story kid.
It's also important to look at a film’s story from a structural viewpoint. Try to to keep in mind that the vast majority of films fall into the three-act structure: a beginning, middle, and end. It's not because the screenwriters are lazy, but because the formula simply works. In screenplays, the first thing you should look out for is the inciting incident. Generally, about 10 minutes into the film, there will be a moment that forces the protagonist to exit their comfort zone and start their journey towards a new goal. Around the thirty-minute mark, there is usually a major turning point. At this moment, the hero can't go back, that signals the beginning of the second act where the majority of the film will take place. Finally, around the ninety-minute mark, the second turning point will signal the film’s drive towards both its conclusion and resolution.
Of course, some films don’t fit perfectly into the three-act structure, but the vast majority of films do and you can start to get a sense of when important moments or changes will occur when you know the general format.

Did you know that this movie is based on the German book "Das doppelte Lottchen" from Erich Kästner? The girls are Luise and Lotte from Vienna and Munich respectively. The book was written around 1945 so the story makes much more sense regarding the timeframe. Today its stupid of course but back then it wasn't that easy to keep in contact when miles apart.

It bothers me that we don't have a grasp on the fact that flawed characters are what make good fiction......or that human beings ARE "problematic" sometimes.....or that we are now expecting fictional characters to only represent the best, most 100% socially acceptable versions of mankind to the point where it borders on limiting creative freedom because we have a meltdown when someone makes a deeply flawed character.....or that we are living in a society where we are no longer able to appreciate true depth of character because we have drawn such hard lines of social acceptability......

This is a good point. On the other hand, writers slot charts with hyper-annoying traits to satisfy formulae. Consider Matt Groenig whose formula requires a Bender. Outrageous and in your face, doing outrageous and implausible things just to satisfy plot points and comedy beats... and nobody would tolerate his presence if it were real. One could make the argument you just made about soap opera characters too. But I knew a couple of girls who were soap opera addicts, and they acted exactly like the characters on TV, neither better nor worse, and in real life no one could stand being around them.

Any movie where the main character's family works too much and never has time for family annoy me because the family in question are always well-off and it never seems to occur to them that the REASON they are well-off is because the main character is always working. If said character lost their job and they lost their standard of living, they'd still end up blaming main character.

I get super rage everytime I think about Independance Day the first movie....the Dad that was treated like c**p by people, gives his life to save the world leaving three kids behind and the President does NOTHING. One line at the end of it of him saying "you kids come live with us at the White House" would have wrapped up a great movie, but nope they ruined it.

Ok, I've always taken a huge issue with how absurdly nonchalant EVERYONE in the weirdo pastel neighborhood in Edward Scissorhands was about inviting essentially a handsome mutant into their lives and homes. Seriously, it BARELY gets addressed, and then yeah sure, let's get him drunk, let him hang with our children and cut our hair... what the honest hell??

I believe it's a genre called "magical realisim". (Someone correct me if I'm wrong.) A magical thing happens, but no one really takes it as being magical. Very popular in Spanish literature of some countries, to my limited knowledge.

The number one thing that bothers me about many films is that a character will use the excuse “I had no choice” (or some varriation of it)as an excuse for what they did. Once you notice it you’ll hear it in most films.

Just saw Uncharted. Fun movie. But the first time the cat's sex is referenced, it's called 'her' and then in the end credits scene, 'she' is called 'Mister Whiskers'. Did the writers just not give a damn about continuity? Also, any movie that refers to a calico cat as male (Big Hero Six, Home)

In general any movie in a midieval/history/fantasy setting: there are often a lack of agricultural areas around towns, castles etcetera. Cause people in towns yesteryear got their food from trucks? And somehow, armour are absolutley useless against swords. Oh... and there are a lot of arrows that goes thru plate armour like it were paper. Etcetera etcetera.

Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Arc..... Indy did nothing. He was supposed to stop the Nazi's from getting and opening the Arc..... he fails and the Nazi's get the Arc and open it. They could have eliminated Indy from the movie and it would have had the same ending.

What I don't understand is in Avenger's: End Game...Thor is a recluse whose fat and depressed from drinking beer all the time. But he's a god..so would he really look fat from drinking too much beer? I always thought "Unfaithful" is horrible movie with horrible message. How can ever in any universe be justified to kill someone as "revenge" because your wife had an affair. And not only that psycho husband got away with murder but he also practically enslaved his wife, trapped her in that horrible marriage with killer, and you can see at the end how miserable and horrified she is. And we are supposed to feel "good" because she is "punished"? On the other hand, maybe I missed the point, maybe the movie point is "don't marry a psycho, they can look normal and cute too". If this is not the message, movie is mysogynistic pease of c**p.

My main problems with Disney movies is the sexual assault that just casually happens. Believe it or not, but you are not supposed to break into a girl's house and kiss her while she's sleeping. If she has actually been sleeping for years, go in and shake her awake or carry her out to a doctor. You do not need to kiss her!

In the original story she literally gets raped and impregnated while sleeping. She wakes up in labour IIRC. Disney definitely toned it down.

In Deep Throat, are we *really* to believe her clitoris is in her throat? She would have had to absorb her twin in the uterus, and even then the clit isn't what would likely get left over and it's even more doubtful it would be located in her throat. Also, she would have known about it being there simply by eating something and swallowing, as she would have had to her entire life.

In general any movie in a midieval/history/fantasy setting: there are often a lack of agricultural areas around towns, castles etcetera. Cause people in towns yesteryear got their food from trucks? And somehow, armour are absolutley useless against swords. Oh... and there are a lot of arrows that goes thru plate armour like it were paper. Etcetera etcetera.

Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Arc..... Indy did nothing. He was supposed to stop the Nazi's from getting and opening the Arc..... he fails and the Nazi's get the Arc and open it. They could have eliminated Indy from the movie and it would have had the same ending.

In the Incredibles 2 then they need to do all this work to turn the ship when Void could have easily made a portal and turned it. I know it's just a kids movie but it still bothers me.

What I don't understand is in Avenger's: End Game...Thor is a recluse whose fat and depressed from drinking beer all the time. But he's a god..so would he really look fat from drinking too much beer? And if he's fat because he wants to be because of his depression..then wouldn't he go back to being trim and fit when he gets his mojo back?

It also matters what color eyes the grandparents have. Both my parents are brown eyed, I have blue and my brother - green eyes. Nearly all our grandparents have light-colored eyes.

I always thought "Unfaithful" is horrible movie with horrible message. How can ever in any universe be justified to kill someone as "revenge" because your wife had an affair. And not only that psycho husband got away with murder but he also practically enslaved his wife, trapped her in that horrible marriage with killer, and you can see at the end how miserable and horrified she is. And we are supposed to feel "good" because she is "punished"? On the other hand, maybe I missed the point, maybe the movie point is "don't marry a psycho, they can look normal and cute too". If this is not the message, movie is mysogynistic pease of c**p.

My main problems with Disney movies is the sexual assault that just casually happens. Believe it or not, but you are not supposed to break into a girl's house and kiss her while she's sleeping. If she has actually been sleeping for years, go in and shake her awake or carry her out to a doctor. You do not need to kiss her!

In the original story she literally gets raped and impregnated while sleeping. She wakes up in labour IIRC. Disney definitely toned it down.

In Deep Throat, are we *really* to believe her clitoris is in her throat? She would have had to absorb her twin in the uterus, and even then the clit isn't what would likely get left over and it's even more doubtful it would be located in her throat. Also, she would have known about it being there simply by eating something and swallowing, as she would have had to her entire life.

Think vitamins -- it's an old story and people had different health kicks back then. Something like 'cod-liver oil' was loaded with healthy vitamins but tasted awful. So, a spoonful of sugar would have helped...
