Memes have skyrocketed in popularity to the extent that almost everyone, including advertisers, is jumping on the bandwagon to leverage their viral potential. NYU’s research states that memes reach ten times more audiences and have 60% more organic engagement as opposed to conventional marketing methods.
Also, since creating a meme is quite inexpensive, it provides brands with an efficient way of reaching out to a large target audience.

For many businesses, email marketing is a popular way to reach their potential customers, but a new study suggests that memes may be even more effective. According to Forbes, the click-through rate (CTR) of a meme campaign is 14% higher than email marketing.
The study compared the two methods to see which one generated clicks and conversions. Even though email marketing had a higher conversion rate, the overall number of clicks was significantly higher for memes.
The reason people are able to resonate with memes is because they often play on universal experiences like the pain of Monday mornings or the joy of getting a longer lunch break. This connection is key to their popularity.
Though creating a meme is an art well mastered by only a handful of brands, It is often based on deep market research as well as a knack for timing. Something that may be appreciated by one audience may be disregarded completely by the other, and sometimes it is easy to tread the wrong side of funny, towards displeasing. That is why companies often try to stay attuned to current trends to ensure their memes hit the mark and don’t come across as out of touch or forced
