When an 81-year-old amateur restorer Cecilia Giménez tried to restore the 19th Century Spanish fresco ‘Ecce Homo’ little did she know that her work would become a worldwide media sensation.
At first, the authorities in Borja suspected vandalism, but it turns out that the painting restoration was executed with the approval of the priest.
The well-intentioned Spanish woman tried to restore the classical art piece because she was upset that parts of it had flaked off due to moisture on the church’s walls. Using a 10-year-old picture of the fresco, she ended up creating probably the worst restoration in history.
Interestingly, over 20,000 people have signed a Change.org petition attempting to save the now famous artwork, that some call “a crayon sketch of a very hairy monkey Jesus in an ill-fitting tunic.”
To make things even funnier, here are some of the best parodies of the botched “Ecce Homo” restoration.
