One of the likely reasons why Friends remained relevant over the years is it touched on matters every adult could relate to. Matt LeBlanc, who played Joey, acknowledged this during a 2023 interview on Steve Harvey’s talk show.
“We never dealt with anything topical—nothing political, no current events. It was always themes like love, trust, betrayal, friendship, and family—things that never go out.”
Can you imagine a world where David Schwimmer wasn’t Ross Geller? Or what if Jennifer Aniston didn’t play Rachel Green? A few now-famous names auditioned to play the six famous characters.
Comedian Kathy Griffin and Glee star Jane Lynch both tried out for the Phoebe role. Obviously, neither of them got the part, but they became friends from that audition.
Iron Man director and Chef star Jon Favreau almost played Chandler Bing before the role went to the late Matthew Perry. He did, however, return in Season 3 to play Monica’s multimillionaire boyfriend, Pete Becker.
Everything's always about Ross - gee that dude reaaaaly needed a therapist!
Courteney Cox is best known for her role as the obsessive-compulsive Monica Geller. However, the show’s producers wanted her to play Rachel Green, which Jennifer Aniston landed.
Cox apparently turned down the offer because she felt a stronger connection with the Monica character. The final casting became the iconic ensemble everyone got to know and love.
Rachel Green’s haircut during the early years of Friends became a phenomenon. “The Rachel” has appeared in lifestyle magazines and Pinterest boards and even saw a recent resurgence.
Stylist Chris McMillan created the distinct haircut, which first appeared on the 20th episode of the first season, “The One With the Evil Orthodontist.” In a 2016 interview, McMillan said he simply wanted Rachel’s new look to be “a bit different.” It’s safe to say he achieved his goal.
The onscreen chemistry between the six characters is evident, and they’ve become good friends in real life. That’s likely because director James Burrows took all of them out on a Las Vegas trip before the show aired. His goal was for them to enjoy themselves and get to know each other better.
That night, Burrows advised the main cast to savor their “last shot at anonymity” because they would “never be able to go anywhere without being hounded” once the show aired. Truer words have never been spoken.
What about you, dear reader? What is your all-time favorite Friends moment? Which one of the characters do you resonate with the most? Who do you least like? And with so many moments turned into popular memes, it’s clear that these iconic scenes have left a lasting impact on fans everywhere. This could be a lengthy discussion in the comments!
Gay ice dancer was pretty hot, though definitely wouldn't work.
And that gay ice dancer was also the stoner dispensary owner on Modern Family! (Steve Zhan)
