A poll in 2018 revealed that more than half of pet owners prefer the company of their animals to their best friends. They felt that spending time with their cuddly companions helped them de-stress after a long day, provided a calming presence in their home, and made their lives richer.

“Our pets are a huge part of our lives and can make our day-to-day lives richer than it would be without them," said the general manager at the Mercure Stratford-Upon-Avon Hotel, James Lys.
“We have noticed a marked increase in guests who bring their pets, specifically their dogs, travelling with them to share in the experience.”
Since so many guests (38%) bring their pets while traveling, Lys commissioned the survey to learn more about the relationship between humans and animals.
In addition to finding out that people prefer the company of their pets over their best friends, they learned that 79% of respondents missed their pets when traveling from home, and around 25% felt lost without their companion on the trip. Meanwhile, half thought that the presence of their pet could’ve made their holiday better.
Besides the benefits already mentioned, our attachment to our pets has to do with their helplessness and vulnerability. We, as humans, feel that these fragile beings require our attention, help, and concern, similar to how we feel about children.
In fact, we’re less likely to feel empathy for adults because they can easily speak up for their rights or defend themselves from danger, whereas animals are unable to do so themselves.
I don't normally like clothes for dogs, but that puppy looks darn proud :)
That's like my oldest chihuahua. I've had her for 13 years while I've only been with my husband for 3. Little traitor!
There’s also the need for unconditional love. Humans want someone who loves us no matter what, has zero expectations, and is always happy to see us, whether we’re grumpy or not. We need someone who truly knows us, can communicate without a single word, and with whom we have no fear of judgment. Meanwhile, in relationships between people, such things can be difficult to find; that’s why we often fill such a need with pets.
How could you leave this bundle of flerf alone at home when he so obviously needs his mommers?
The bond with animals is also unbreakable, which isn’t always the case with humans. The more time you spend with your pet, the more the connection keeps growing. If you need proof of this, just take a look at darling Hachiko, who waited for his owner at the train station long after he passed away.
Nobody tell Harry Potter that a Chihuahua has it better than he did...
Even Sigmund Freud, a neurologist and the founder of psychoanalysis, was a lover of dogs. He once said to his friend Marie Bonaparte in a letter, “Dogs love their friends and bite their enemies, quite unlike people, who are incapable of pure love and always have to mix love and hate.”
sometimes i am in a glaring bad mood but i smile at any pets that i might see. always.
I get this, but please dont smile at my dog. It will be ten minutes of him kissing your face and trying to rest in your arms. He weights 45+ kg, so I get my dues eighter way 😄
I always say hi boof to dogos, but not necessarily to their humans
My kids and I will always say hi to the pupper but rarely say hi to the owner.
A few days ago I was in the passenger seat of a stopped car, and was looking at a dog and its owner walking towards us. As it got almost next to me the dog veered right towards me, wagging it's tail. Even though I was in the car and only watching it knew I'd have been happy to say hello.
I will smile at her and talk to her in the voice I reserve only for animals and tell her hello and that she's precious.
Who does that? How can you not smile, greet (hi pupper) everytime is beyond me.
I love animals but will ignore them when I am walking outside. Not because I hate other peoples pets, but because I don't know how they want to train their dog. If I train a dog to be polite to others but not so friendly that they want to hop into everybody's arms, then I would appreciate it if not everybody fawns over the dog like they are the best of friends.
I always smile to dogs as I pass, but.... some of the humans think that me greeting the dog is an invitation to start a conversation with them and it is just horrible. So, I can understand if some don't smile at dogs because it has had negative reprecussions in the past.
The most common phrase heard in our car is "Doggy on the right!" and we don't have kids.
He found their companionship uncomplicated and pure. Freud became so inseparable from his dogs that he would meet patients with them in his consulting room. On several birthdays, he even received short congratulatory poems with wishes from them, purposefully written by his children.

OK, I'm embarrassed to admit that I do this as well if they aren't already with me.
That's me. 😅 Spocks NEEDS my kisses, though. It's a medical condition. He suffers greatly without them.
one time i was having a bad day and didn't have anyone to talk to because my sister was home sick so on the way home I passed by this area where a bunch of stray cats are and started to play with a kitty but then a bunch of cats just showed up and they walked across the street to some food bowls following this orange cat I call ginger. ginger let me pet her and ig since shes the leader they all let me pet them. my mom ended up driving by trying to look for me and she caught me just surrounded by cats
