“Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me” is one of the most incorrect sayings of all time. Idiotic opinions, fallacies, and outright untruths are all, unfortunately, broadcasted over the internet for everyone to see, meaning that all of us have to see, hear, and read the very worst words and ideas humans can put together.
The “Facepalm” internet group gathers all those moments when people really did or said something so unbelievable that it caused a visceral reaction to all onlookers. And through the magic of the internet, it can reach you too. So be sure to upvote your “favorites” and comment your thoughts below.

im so tired of this. the immigant boat was on the news for days. Stop acting like no one cared. I literally had to stop watching the news because of the coverage broke my heart. The submarine became world news after a few days because it was a stupid concept and the first time it happened. Lifes and families are ruined. Its not a contest. Edit: the most submarine attention comes from people that say we shouldnt give them attention. Like right here.
Burnnnnnnnnnnnn
The oldest use of the word “facepalm” (but not the actual, physical action) dates back to the early days of the internet. In 1996, where the first netizens mentioned it in a variety of posts about everyday life. This points to the fact that this phrase was in the popular lexicon earlier, as the posters do not clarify what the word means and use it nonchalantly.
However, the actual post, of holding one’s face in your palm, is relatively old, and found in statues and sculptures going back hundreds, if not thousands of years. Normally, it was associated with more serious loss, like Henri Vidal’s Caïn, depicting the biblical figure mourning the death of his own brother, who he killed.

“Muh Guns!!!”
Both my kids went through primary school, high school and university without ever knowing what 'Active shooter drills' are all about. I never had to wonder if they would come home alive everyday.
Same for us Kiwis. We do have drills for earthquakes though but nobody can regulate those sneaky buggers.
Load More Replies...I don't think John Howard would be anyone's choice as the best Prime Minister ever but to his credit he acted quickly after the Port Arthur massacre to enact gun control legislation. None of this "thoughts and prayers" cop out
Wow. First time I've heard anything good said about John Howard. But you're right. He did.
Load More Replies...Australia still has guns. But not automatics or semi-automatics. Pistols are rare but not banned. And no carrying guns in public. Even carrying toy guns in public is frowned upon.
Semi- automatics are still available in Australia.... Primary Producers ( farmers ) have a license class allowing them to own and use semi automatic guns ... shotguns ... high and low power rifles. Pistols are heavily restricted and take a lot of police checks and club membership to obtain a license to own one.
Load More Replies...We're extremely grateful for gun control. Thank goodness our politicians were less influenced by the yanks back then than they are now.
I do so love it that some Amerians feel sorry for those of us who "don't have the right to own guns", (even though we do.) We feel sorry for those 48,000+ Americans who learn the consequence of the right to bear arms each year.
So, this year my girls' school had their first drill for an active shooter. I don't think there are adequate words to describe that these drills are not just for the school, but for the entire community. It involved officers and first responder people from 3 cities, blocking off roads, changing traffic flow for others, having all residences and businesses go into lockdown. I just pray my girls never have to do the real thing because itl it IS scary (myself having experienced a bomb going off at my high school the last day of freshman year).
I genuinely feel for you. On another post, I asked why it seems virtually all Americans have a therapist. The more comments I read, the more I understand why. I can't imagine what it's like for your daughter to deal with that, or you wondering if she'll be harmed in place which should be one of the safest places she could be.
Load More Replies...It’s very unfortunate that active shooter is becoming commonplace at all outdoor celebrations in the US. You can no longer go to 4th of July celebrations, concerts, even shopping now without risk of becoming a target for some emotionally unstable idiot with a legally purchased firearm.
Had a concert here in my home town cancelled just last night for a bomb threat.
Load More Replies...Hahahahahaha........ nah it's not a shame. Also, I know of at least half a dozen kids in my grade who have their gun licenses and go shooting. And they don't live on property. So like, it's not like you can't. But we're so much safer!
It’s a shame that only a few of my fellow Americans think it’s normal to have to worry about being shot by some random stranger with a military style weapon. The majority of Americans want them banned.
I checked yesterday. As of July, 9th, we've had approximately 375 mass shootings in 2023 according to the gun violence archive. Sometime over the 4th, of July weekend we surpassed the number of days in a year. Over that weekend there were approximately 20. Numbers from the Gun Violence Archive.
1996, and one lunatic kills 35 people, wounds 23. The government of the day said 'this is bull****, we're doing something about it'. And the vast majority of Australians said 'yeah, it IS bull****, let's get it done'. And it was. Just about the only good thing that particular govt did, but at least they did that.
I consider it a trade off. If anyone ever shoots at my kids in school? Then I shoot at the politicians/gun groups I hold personally responsible.
This scot never wants her kids to experience the b******t that's just a regular Tuesday. No thank
Incidentally, Scotland is the only place in the UK that has ever had a mass shooting in a school. Once was still one time too many, but we actually took a stance and acted on it rather than just offering thoughts and prayers.
Load More Replies...Only a tiny minority of Aussies were 'forced' to give up their guns. Just like with gun laws in the UK post Dunblane, they were introduced at the demand of the public. It wasn't the government imposing them on the populace. If they'd have refused to do anything they'd have been kicked out of office at the next election.
us Aussies are fine mate.. the twats down here that carry guns illegally only target each other.. 99.99% of our streets are safe 😁🥳
I (European) really do admire how the historic background of both North America and Australia/New-Zealand is roughly the same (some Europeans conquering a remote area, fighting against the pissed off local inhabitans and wildlife), but at a certain point people in OZ/NZ decided that carrying weapons are seldom a necessity in daily life, when in the USA the majority feels worthless and frightened without them.
The majority of Americans don’t own guns, so that is incorrect. Around 30% of the population owns all of them. There is overwhelming support for gun control, but the system is rigged against us. The minority have enough control (backed by the gun lobby) to stop real change from happening. I do see why you, and many around the world, would think otherwise, though.
Load More Replies...American here and I would like to be completely offended and tell you how wrong you are but...
There isn't a country on this planet that wants to be America. They may cherry-pick their favorite aspects of our culture and emulate them, but no one wants to adopt the whole package given what's happening here.
Can someone begin to explain to me how they live in the USA and send their kids to school and manage not to worry themselves sick every second of the school day? Genuine question. I know I’m great at worrying, but that level of anxiety… What do you tell yourselves?
Someone calculated the odds in a comment much earlier than this one -- they're much more in one's favor than you might think. My son graduated high school in 2007, and I don't ever remember being worried about a school shooting.
Load More Replies...I wish I could vote this more than once. America, and Americans in general (but definitely not all of them) need to understand that their time as the country the whole world wants to be, the country the whole world wants to visit and be country the whole world wants to emulate is long, long gone. You literally kill children in school EVERY WEEK of the school year, but instead of DOING SOMETHING, you allow your leaders and politicians (they are NOT the same thing) to do nothing but “offer thoughts and prayers”. What a ridiculous, no, not ridiculous, offensive is the word, what an offensive insult toward the children you swore to protect, to love and to serve. And then next week, it happens again. And on the days you aren’t slaughtering your children in schools, your mismanagement of your mentally ill and unbalanced allows THEM to walk into public places like shopping malls, cinemas, nightclubs or just the street corner and THEY shoot dead more people. We do NOT want to be you.
Then you send in your police. And they shoot dead the people they think did it. Maybe they did. Maybe they didn’t. As long as someone dies. That’s not justice. That legalised vigilantism. You call the police for HELP. And they shoot you dead, because you thought you were safe because YOU called for help, you were confused when the police screamed at YOU “hands up, lie down on your face, don’t move”. So when you didn’t comply INSTANTLY, they shot YOU, too. But it’s OK, they also called an ambulance. We hope you can afford it, or at least the house they called it to is yours, so you can sell it to pay the medical bills you’ll accumulate getting fixed for the bullet wounds caused by the police you called for help. Oh, not your house? That’s OK. You can sue the police, or the city, or the ambulance, or the hospital - or as your lawyer hopes, ALL of them. So you spend a year in hospital and ten years in court. No, America. We do NOT want to be you. We don’t even want to visit any more.
Load More Replies...No country should have to know what the tern " active shooter " means, however, sadly, some do, I think this is one of the times when living in the UK isn't bad....
Huh that's funny cuz I sure as s**t don't want to be an American...... Pretty bad coming from someone who lives here.... uuuggghhhhhh
I could never imagine being a parent, waiting on your child to return home from school, waiting, thinking they're late. You turn on the TV and you see the news. Your heart just shatters. This should not be a scenario in a first world country that calls itself "land of the free". Those children were not free to live their lives and explore their futures, because you had to have your "freedoms" to own a gun. I think the freedom of children is far more important.
You know you dont live in the US when you sit for a while confused about why Aussies was being amputated..Had to read the second comment to get a grip.
For a moment, I thought someone tried to take their hands, before I realized they're talking about guns.
I went my entire young adult life never knowing that the school shooting rates haven't increased much since I was in school. Media coverage had though. It's only been since around 2018 that they have significantly increased. When I was younger, I was taught that journalists intentionally did not sensationalize terrorist style events because of copy cat problems. Looks like we have forgotten that since columbine
Ehh, the guns aren't the problem. It's the people. If someone really wanted to kill people, they could still get a gun, even here (Canada).
But that's the point. It's not that you can make access to guns impossible, it's just that you can make the barriers to entry so high that Kyle Rittenhouse can't get his c**t hands on one.

Load More Replies...I'm sure your words will be of great comfort to all of the many parents whose children left their classroom in a body bag. I'm sure they're all thinking, "my son is dead, but hey, at least everyone has the freedom to carry a gun. That makes it all better". /s

Due to the internet and the general ubiquity of this emotion, the facepalm remains popular, to such a degree that there is even a facepalm emoji (Unicode U+1F926) and a vast library of stock images depicting this action. While commonly reaction images of humans facepalming were used, one can now even find animals doing the gesture, most likely by accident, but it’s always fun to imagine a cat actually facepalming.

For those that see something not worth a full facepalm, as it is a bit dramatic at times, you can use the good old disappointed head shake, that one’s grandparents will tactically deploy when they see anything that confuses them. Over text, one can quickly and easily communicate their disappointment with the good old acronym smh (shaking my head) which is actually older than good old facepalm.

On the other hand, should one need to deploy stronger language, there is always the trusty face desk aka the head desk. While we do not recommend you actually do this, be sure to upvote the posts that go beyond a facepalm. This is a stronger emotion, one so visceral that the victim wants to physically bash the thing they just read or heard right out of their head.

I once saw a guy in his car crossing himself before starting to drive at a green light. This was in Athens and traffic was hell (2003).

The reality is that there have always been people who might cause us to facepalm. Bad decisions and horrible opinions are deeply human and probably existed before language. So it’s overall a net positive that we have methods to immediately “get it out of our system” when someone does something so deeply idiotic that it makes us feel bad by proxy. As long as we don’t facepalm too hard.

Brain Damage: Cool, Vaccine: Nope, Thanks
Similarly, while the internet allows us to see more facepalm-inducing moments, on the flip side, it lets us publicly shame people with ideas this bad and it communicates to others who might have similar ideas that in reality, they are wrong and should keep it to themselves. Someone is not a bad person for being wrong but sticking by an objectively terrible opinion even when presented with contrary evidence is pretty childish. If you want to keep facepalming, Bored Panda has got you covered, check out our other article on this topic here.
