Rainbow flags, costumes, and parade floats are all the things you would expect to see at any LGBTQ pride week, but what about a church pastor giving out hugs? We know the slogan of Austin, Texas is ‘keep Austin weird,’ but people were probably caught off-guard when they saw best-selling Christian author Jen Hatmaker, along with the Austin New Church congregation offering ‘free mom hugs’ to Austin Pride Week attendees.

The idea behind ‘mom hugs’ originally came from Oklahoma author Sara Cunningham. A religious woman living in a conservative town, she struggled to deal with her son’s sexuality and told CBS she felt, “I had to choose between my child and faith.” Her perspective changed after a conversation with her son, where he told her, “‘Mom, I met someone and I need you to be okay with it.'” It took time, education and Facebook groups but Cunningham and her husband came around and began attending pride events. Through her own transformation she noticed how many kids were still suffering from family rejection, so in 2015 she made a Facebook post volunteering her services as a ‘stand-in-mom’ for LGBT individuals who had been shunned by their parents for being gay.

Cunningham’s post went viral and turned spawned the official organization Free Mom Hugs. According to the site they: “Attend various events, offering hugs, support, and resources to the LGBTQ+ community. Free Mom Hugs also offers speakers for various functions and events.” The group has gone on to inspire others, like Hatmaker and her pastor husband Brandon, to literally open up their arms to their local LGBTQ community.

On her Instagram page, Hatmaker posted touching photos from Austin Pride Week, with the caption: “My beloved little church went downtown to the #AustinPrideParade and gave out Free Mom Hugs, Free Dad Hugs, Free Grana Hugs, and Free Pastor Hugs like it was our paying jobs. And when I say hugs, I mean THE KIND A MAMA GIVES HER BELOVED KID.”

Adding the emotional responses they received from attendees such as:
“I miss this.”
“My mom doesn’t love me anymore.”
“My Dad hasn’t spoken to me in three years.”
“Please just one more hug.”

This is not the first time Hatmaker and her husband have shown their support of the LGBTQ community. In 2016 she received backlash for her interview with the Religion News Service, where she said she believed LGBTQ marriages could be holy and criticized President Donald Trump for being a racist. Well, Hatmaker has continued to show her critics she doesn’t care and used the parade to spread love, “We told them over and over that they were impossibly loved and needed and precious. This is what we are doing here, what we are here for.”

This is not the first time the couple has spoken up for the LGBTQ community

Hatmaker said in a 2016 interview with the Religious News Service she believed, “any two adults have the right to choose who they want to love,” and received backlash

Her husband Brandon, pastor at the Austin City New Church, echoed her sentiments and posted, “We both believe a same-sex marriage, as a life-long monogamous commitment, can be holy before God”

On her Instagram, she said they told parade attendees over and over that they “were impossibly loved”

The “Free Mom Hugs” movement was started by author Sara Cunningham, who was inspired by struggles with her own gay son to share love with those who had been rejected by their parents

I felt sad, so sad , while this is great and needed, I can't forget why its needed. I don't understand shunning someone and treating the badly just because they do not believe like you. I see this every single day, and its not left / right, Christian / non-Christian its EVERYWHERE. People seem to believe, nowadays, that if you don't agree with them then you become *insert vile derogatory word here* . disgustingly sad..

Not sure if this is allowed so feel free to delete my post BoredPanda, but: there's a small subreddit called Reddit.com/r/momforaminute, for anybody whose mother is unavailable, for whatever reason. We have just set up our own group here in Folkestone, Kent, England to give out hugs at the forthcoming Pride March on 8th September. A little local company have offered to make t-shirts for us. Within one day of starting the group we have 20 members! No religion involved just a bunch of mums, dads and grannies wanting to give loving hugs to those who miss them!

And this is how you earn followers in Christ. Christianity means to be CHRIST-LIKE. That means love all, be kind. Jesus would have been there hugging everyone too. He loved all despite their creed, race, or background. This church has got it right. I wish a church like that existed where I lived. I might actually go.

Churches must change to keep up with modern sensibilities if it will survive. Those preaching intolerance and hatred are doomed to failure. When Satanists are proving to be better people than Christians, you know the church is failing.

Look for hugging events (maybe on social media? or a church's events page?) but creating a family of your own--friends, colleagues, people who you trust and who love you for being you. It takes a long time, but you will find them. Sometimes the family you create is more loving than the family you are born into. Hang in there.

As a bisexual Christian, this makes me cheerful beyond words! It’s painful to know that people can be so cruel; that parents and friends can cast away others. This is unendingly sweet, and I’d love to do this myself! It’s wonderful, as both a member of the community and the Christian faith, to see this. Can’t describe.

Welcome to Bored Panda, a place where people are more willing to pick up a fight whomever has a different opinion than theirs. I'll always stay strong to these moms who have decided to speak up their voices regardless of the media's protests. Remember this line? 'as long as you live under MY roof, you'll play by MY rules'. And there you go. I won't support something because you do. My comments are only offensive if you want them to be.

At my college, they have an LGBTQ week that allows people from the community to talk about their struggles with people that don't support and sometimes openly ridicule the movement. For the sake of this story, I will refer to my friend who is a transgender (man dressing as a woman) as he. I normally refer to transgender as the gender they identify with. Anyways, my friend told the story of him growing up in a conservative home. From the time he was a toddler, he'd wear his mom's high heels and her make up..every time receiving a beating from his father for doing so. When he was a teen, he suck out of the house and dressed as a girl. Some boys from his school recognized him, chased him down and beat the hell out of him. His fathers solution to the attack was to throw his son out of the house stating he was an embarrassment. I stood there in shock wondering how anyone could hate their own child that much. He is now married with 3 kids and all of them accept him for who he is.

GOD LOVES EVERYONE UNCONDITIONALLY. But!!! HE HATES THE SIN! How can these pastors marry them? It goes against scripture. His laws are for our own good. Many verses, this is just one : 1Tim 1:8-11 We know that the law is good if one uses it properly. 9 We also know that the law is made not for the righteous but for lawbreakers and rebels, the ungodly and sinful, the unholy and irreligious, for those who kill their fathers or mothers, for murderers, 10 for the sexually immoral, for those practicing homosexuality, for slave traders and liars and perjurers—and for whatever else is contrary to the sound doctrine 11 that conforms to the gospel concerning the glory of the blessed God, which he entrusted to me.

The pastors are marrying them? GOD LOVES SINNERES, BUT HATES THE SIN!!! We are to love everyone, but we cannot go against God's rules and agree with sin. They are there to keep us safe. Lev 18:22, R0m 1:27, 1 Cor 6:9-11, 1 Tim 1:8-11We know that the law is good if one uses it properly. Same in work, how does your sexual preference hinders your belief? Everyone can be not straight yet they still believe in God right? And I know God loves those who doesn't oblige his bidding more than those who already follows him, so why they keep saying that God hates being LGBTQ?

Guys, love is not something that you force others to. You won't be ok if a man forces a kid to love them, right? Some loves must be earned and disappointment isn't it. Many moms want biological grandchildren, not kiddies from somebody else. I'm sorry, but it's true. Not everybody has to like what you like. Don't confuse my honesty with rudeness.

According to your own statement, children do not have to love their parents. Perhaps you have confused love with respect. Also, it isn't up to the parents if their adult children reproduce: that idea remained in the Stone Age, where it belongs.

I am not religious in any shape or form, but doesn't the Bible teach that God is Love? Extremely heartening to see Christians acting as such!

Well, the Bible TELLS you God is love, but it's very "tell-don't-show" as God is like the Jews abusive boyfriend for much of the Bible.

Can’t describe.

i'm not a religious person but it seems to me that's what being a christian is supposed to be about. loving your neighbor, helping them and lifting them up...at least that's what all their songs say. heartbreaking it's necessary, but it's so beautiful to see a group actually doing it!!

There are more... how can you agree as pastors... pastors of what? NOT the bible.

Same in work, how does your sexual preference hinders your belief? Everyone can be not straight yet they still believe in God right? And I know God loves those who doesn't oblige his bidding more than those who already follows him, so why they keep saying that God hates being LGBTQ?

That'd sweet and all but the idea that anyone is being rejected by there family in 2018 for being gay in nonsense. Unless you live in the middle east. Or you live in the West yet your family is from the Middle East. That's it.

In the US, if you are lgbtq, you might be rejected by your family, your friends, your classmates. Children in the US are committing suicide because of the rejection of their family and peers.
