Here’s How The Internet Reacted To The New Britney Spears Documentary (30 Tweets)
Turns out, one of the most famous pop culture icons, Britney Spears, for years hasn't been able to hold full control of her own life. Ever since 2007, Britney's been under a conservatorship helmed by her father, Jamie Spears, which means that all of her personal finances have been managed by her father and a lawyer. The legal guardianship has been put in place following Britney's public breakdown back in 2008. A few years ago, concerned fans have launched the #FreeBritney movement, hoping to help restore Britney's autonomy and raise media awareness about the whole situation.
A few days ago, the New York Times released a new documentary called Framing Britney Spears focusing on the pop star's guardianship. In addition, the documentary showcases the misogyny and media scrutiny Britney has been facing throughout the years of her career, which left many viewers absolutely shocked and disturbed, resulting in the topic trending on Twitter. With that being said, Bored Panda invites you to look through some of people's reactions after watching the documentary.

going to be honest, i'm not entirely educated on the subject, but the way they treated her was so degrading
The whole legal guardianship situation started back in 2007, when Britney was spotted driving her car with her infant son in her lap, attacked a photographer’s car with an umbrella, and shaved her head. After these instances, Britney was put under a hold in a psychiatric hospital for a mental health evaluation.
Following that, the singer was put under a "temporary" conservatorship.
The conservatorship kept getting extended, and fans started questioning whether this legal guardianship was truly necessary. Somewhere along the line, the #FreeBritney campaign was born.
"During the twelve years of Spears' conservatorship, she has repeatedly toured the world, released multiple albums, and worked on a variety of television shows," reads Free Britney website. "Her conservators decide whether or not she works, as she cannot enter into contracts for herself because she is legally not her own person. Britney Spears needs permission from her conservators to leave her house or spend any of her own money."
In 2019, Britney was actively trying to make changes to the terms of the conservatorship and attempted to remove her father from it, however, her wish was declined by a judge.
"My client has informed me that she is afraid of her father. She will not perform again if her father is in charge of her career," Britney's lawyer told Associated Press.
"While she appreciates what her father has done for her in the past, she feels she's ready to take more control of her finances and healthcare, and it's been an endless struggle. She is excited about turning 39, and she thinks this year will be a healing year for her," an insider close to Britney told ET.
As of now, Britney's conservatorship is extended to September 2021.
After watching the new documentary called Framing Britney Spears, many were absolutely disturbed about the way media and the paparazzi have been treating the artist all these years. Many were particularly shocked by the questions interviewers would ask her. "Watching this Britney Spears doc... Can you imagine an interviewer asking a woman if she’s a virgin today?! Disgusting," a user wrote on Twitter.
I'm ashamed for this men. And still to this day he doesn't see anything wrong with that question. He's downplaying it and tells the Dutch media it was asked to give Britney a change to defend herself. Yeah right, I say cancel Ivo Niehe the dirty bastard.
I do have to wonder about this specific tweet. Honey, you're just NOW noticing the systemic sexism in the entertainment industry. I mean, I'm glad you are seeing it at all, but it didn't start with Britney, she was just the continuation of a long line of abuse for entertainment and power.
It's disgusting how she has been treated. i hope she gains more happiness and respect...#freebritney
I've never liked her music but that doesn't mean she should be treated like this. She was a child star pushed into fame in an abusive fashion. No wonder she broke down.
