How long were you stuck in your ways before, and what happened that changed your mind? Do any parts of your old way of thinking still stick around now?

I was a Reagan Republican in my young adulthood. My dad was a Republican, and we were doing well, considering he worked his way up the ladder to our wealth. Mom was a Democrat and tended to be quiet about it until the ERA. Mom worked her way up the ladder too, but after my brother and I could be trusted to be alone after school. As I grew and became independent, I learned more about the world and other viewpoints. For a while I was on the fence. I was going to vote for John McCain for president. He was a very good man, and I thought I could trust him until he gave in to the party, taking Sarah Palin as his running mate. Nope! I voted for Obama, and am still glad that I did. Now I watch my old party drift further away. My parents used To count out each other’s vote since 1968, but my dad actually voted for Obama the second time around, and has been a Democrat ever since. The Republican Party alienated us.

I used to very conservative, but now consider myself independent.

My parents and hometown were very conservative which played a huge role on me. My parents never let me have different opinions or I’d get yelled at, so I came to believe their opinions were my own. When I went to college and started becoming more independent and was able to be in the real world, I changed a lot of my beliefs and opinions on things as I was more educated on certain matters and felt more comfortable expressing myself.

I still believe some things I previously did, but I’m now much more open minded about other ideas and having a conversation about them.
