People Are Joining This Thread Ranting About Overhyped Foods They Don’t Understand And Here Are 34 Of Them
It is probably impossible to find a food that everyone loves, there will always be someone who hates it with all their heart. Even the most common things that a lot of recipes may contain. It is interesting how different people can eat the same thing, but have a different reaction to the taste or even perceive it differently.
Even though the Latin maxim says that there is no point in disputing tastes, people love to give their opinions on food. Reddit user jamboamericano wanted to know people’s opinions on foods that are hyped up but “quite simply suck.” They received 3k responses so take a look at the most popular ones that quite a lot of people agreed on.

I don't get the appeal of chili that is made to be as hot and spicy as humanly possible, to the point that it hurts to eat it. "I make my chili with the five hottest peppers known to man and a dash of snake venom to kick it up a notch" Why?
That, and tofu.
Instagram food (so foods with so much added nonsense just for the sake of a photo, not for taste)
Caviar
I feel like whoever buys that s**t doesn't actually like it and uses it to flaunt their money
This is just silly. There are types of caviar that aren't expensive, particularly because you're not meant to shovel it in with a fork. I absolutely love caviar, and it has nothing to do with showing off or being rich (I'm not).
Oysters, I've never tried them and I never want to, they just look like big boogers to me, sorry for the mental image.
Macarons. Expensive air cookies that still manage to stick to your teeth.
Kombucha. I know it is a drink, but still
Liver. Just......no.
Why would anyone downvote this? I'm upvoting so you don't have a negative.
Load More Replies...You just have to have good liver and prepare it right. I could eat a ton of it.
I'm sorry...your words make no sense to me.
Load More Replies...Liver makes me ugly cry. My mom tried making me eat it and not leave the table until it was gone. I put up a long fight and she never made me liver again. Pick your battles.
You're lucky. My parents loved it and made us eat it several times a year. All the catsup in the world won't cover that taste. All the fuss we made, I never understood why they put themselves through that. I would never make my kids eat something they hated.
Load More Replies...Love liver! Growing up, we had to have even a bite of it. Both my sister and I got use to it and now I look forward to visiting home so I can have it again. (my wife hates the smell of it)
I quite agree. It's a no from me as well. The texture more than the taste.
And once you find out in science class exactly what the liver does. That was taught in 7th grade for me (I’m 61), so probably taught in 5th grade now.
Load More Replies...This is actually good. It just has a bad rep. Gizzards are great too!
Another of my mother’s favorites that the rest of the family couldn’t stand the sight of. She’d try to fix it as a meal for everyone, and my father would just make some toast and scramble a bunch of eggs for the rest of us and himself.
Chicken livers sauteed with mushrooms, make some rich gravy in the same pan, and serve over rice. Sort of a dinner version of pate.
I soak the liver in milk while I chop and dice onions, mushrooms and bacon. Add butter or preferably bacon grease into a frying pan and fry the bacon until it's crispy then set it aside in a different container. Next, add more grease if needed and fry the onions and mushrooms together with salt and pepper until soft. In a bowl put some plain flour along with a mixture of your favourite seasoning, I usually stick with salt and pepper but use whatever you think is tasty. Then take the liver out of the milk and dice it into the size chunks you want. Remove the onions and mushrooms from the pan into a large pan then coat the liver bits in the seasoned flour mixture and fry it in the frying pan with more grease if needed. When it's partly cooked put it in the large pan with the onions and mushrooms and add brown gravy and let it simmer for about 20 minutes. Once it's done you can add the bacon bits into the mixture. Serve with mashed potatoes
If people wouldn't overcook it so often, more people would appreciate it. Or add more butter, call it pate, and watch the same people stuff their faces...
My mom loves liver and onions and I hated it as a kid. She will lie and say this didn't happen but I came home from elementary school and she told me she made steak (which she is also bad at) and I said it smelled like liver. She insisted it was steak and tried to force me to eat it. I think that was one of the few times my dad stood up to her and said no. It took me a long time to try new foods. I still have trust issues with other peoples cooking.
Accidentally got liver and onions from a buffet thinking it was hamburger steak. Most disgusting thing I've ever tried. Just awful.
I love chopped liver and pate and all that, but liver and onions = barf for me, too.
Load More Replies...Growing up my Dad and I loved liver, my Mom would always cook something different for everyone else. And my late wife loved it as well, but our daughter hated it.
It's a body's filtration system. Let that sink in. May as well suck on a washer hose.
good at first them comes the weird after taste and the film left behind,,i agree no thank you...
Can't handle the blood tissue mouth feel, but if it's pureed into pate, love it.
A local restaurant has had this one liver dish on their menu for like forever. I go there a few times a year, just to enjoy the greatness of it.
My Grandmother used to cook it when I was a child and stink the whole house out .I have never eaten it again as an adult .I do like chicken livers, pate etc though.
always hated liver but a friend insisted that we try a local German deli's liverwurst. they were right, its so good! liver is all about how it is prepared.
Yum. I love liver. Chicken liver and calf liver are so tasty. Nightmare for your cholesterol, though, lol.
I can 100% see how liver is a love or hate thing, but I LOVE it. :)
It's actually really good- A friend had some that they needed to make before it went bad, so they used it as training treats for their dogs, and let me have some for my dog too- I didn't have any pockets (I wear women's clothing) so I put it in my mouth to hold it. I ended up eating some of it... It's pretty good.
prepared correctly, it can be delicious. My German grandma used to soak it overnight in whole milk, dredge it in flour and fry it up with sliced onions and apples. NOM
I usually cook the liver this way. First fry chopped onion in a pan with a little oil until the onion is "transparent". At this point add the liver cutted in cubes of 2 x 2 cm and cook it with a medium power (we have gas so the valve is half open) for about 5 to 10 minutes. During this procedure add salt, pepper, thyme and a dash of English Worcerstershire sauce. It's ready!
I haven't eaten liver in well over 35 years and I came still 'taste' it when I think about it!
Organ meats are all hit or miss. Liver isn't particularly appealing to me, but I've had a few different animal hearts and those are exceptional. Usually my heavy iron cravings can be satiated by shellfish and/or greens though. The spinach on that plate has me drooling.
I love calves liver but it's very hard to find in a supermarket.
Liver is overhyped? No one overhypes liver, it's traditionally hated by a lot of people, and apparently by this person as well. I happen to love it, especially chicken livers. Rich flavor, no gristle or fat.
I love chicken livers, but not beef. Beef tastes too... livery.
Load More Replies...I dislike liver...unless it's pâté or Mother Goose liverwurst. Sometimes, you just have to find the right form of a particular food.
This was one of my childhood hates. When I was grown-up, I tried all of my hates, and this one moved up on the list. Mushrooms came off the list totally.
Fried liver and bacon in a tomato and garlic sauce with rice nom nom nom 😋
If it's cows liver on a South American style bbq, I'll eat it. I've eaten many parts of the cow when bbq'd by my family; tasted damn good too. My favorite is sweetbreads with a little lemon and salt.
I've never even thought of bbq'ing liver! Does it need a marinade or do you just throw it on?
Load More Replies...Love it but only if it's made right. Soak over night in milk to remove the "funk" and then lightly dredge in seasoned flour and quick fry. Mmmmm.
As someone from the UK I don't get why so many people here love mushy peas. I find peas relatively tasteless and gross as they are, mushing them just makes the texture gross as well
Kale. I don’t care how it’s prepared, there’s just no point to it.
If it's prepared and cooked properly, Kale is delicious. Especially Scottish black kale. My family loves it and it's full of nutrients like iron and vitamins.
Lobster. I uh, I don't get it. It always tastes a bit flavorless and just alright to me. Then I see people dip it in butter and yea thats fine and all and it tastes great, but then I get the feeling I'm just tasting the butter and what the f**k is the point of this $30 dish exactly?
Like a lot of shellfish, it has to be fresh from the ocean. If you have it in a tank at the supermarket where they just sit there it's not worth it. Back on PEI, Canada; 70% of houses are having fresh lobster on Mother's Day right off the boat. Can't beat it.
This will not be popular…Taco Bell.
Only edible if it’s absolutely drenched in hot sauce. It’s mushy, bland, makes me bloated, and strangely, sometimes gives me a headache. 2 out of 5 times found a hair in the burrito. I gave up.
Or if you’re drunk, the bar closed, and there’s no other place open.
Five Guys. Not sure if it’s the same as in the US (I’m in the UK) or I just got a dodgy meal but it was just greasy overpriced mess.
Pop tarts
Hot Cheetos. I absolutely love spicy foods but they taste like bleeda**. whatever that means
Hot Flamin' Cheetos is my guilty pleasure. My butt does not thank me the next day, though
Truffle oil
The majority of truffle oil isn't actually made with truffles. The main ingredient is a chemical designed in a laboratory to mimic the aroma of truffles (synthetic 2,4-dithiapentane).
Beets. My wife tried to convince me to like them by saying "they taste like dirt!" Needless to say, this was an ineffective approach.
Ranch dressing. It’s vile. People put it on EVERYTHING. gross. Just stop it.
When it was first introduced, it was a packet mix that you combined with mayonnaise and real buttermilk. It was delicious then. You can still buy the mix and that's the only way to prepare it IMHO.
Olives
Kimchi, it just doesn't taste as interesting as people say it does
Shrimp, and any other sea-roaches
Shrimp is pretty cool if it's cooked well. Not overcooked and not drenched in seasoning. With most of these you just got to cook it lightly with minimal additions to keep the true taste.
Seafood. It stinks, it looks gross, and every time I've been convinced to try it it's been rank. My husband and I have agreed many times that we'd have to be starving to death before we ever considered seafood as a meal. I do not understand how anybody can enjoy it. It creates a visceral negative reaction in me.
I love seafood, but I'm careful where I source it. No dodgy diner seafood, please.
Food: Sweet potato
Drink: Kombucha
I can't understand the enjoyment of either, as both taste like dirt
I don't think it sucks but I don't get why popcorn is so cherished.
I don't like the flavor, the texture, or the f*****g kernels that get stuck in my teeth. The smell is always terrible to me and it lingers.
But what I really hate is having to explain to people offering it to me that I actually don't like popcorn, no, I really don't, yes, even that type, yes it's a popular snack, no, I really don't like it.
Reading these posts makes me think these are a lot of pizza, burgers, and fries fans. It is interesting to branch out and try other foods. I don't know why some of these foods are considered to be "hyped". Who hypes tofu????
I think some are conflating over hyped with simply being well known. To me, over hyped is akin to saying it's the best and nothing will compare to it.
Load More Replies...Seems like people love hating on some of the healthiest foods you can eat. They might not all taste great, but your body will certainly thank you in the long run.
I think a lot of healthy foods can taste great if you learn how to prepare them well and the way you like best!
Load More Replies...This thread makes no sense! Someone likes some type of food, some don't.
I would say the most overhyped things I've tasted were some of the major food chain meals, didn't live up to the hype. There were some others but those are local to the region and might not be so common elsewhere....but none lived up to the hype.
Are people f*****g serious? They are downvoting the people who say they hate pickles or mushrooms just because they do? People seem to forget that too many downvotes gets a person BANNED and shouldn’t be used to express dislike for someone’s opinion. Unless the person is going out of their damn way to be frigging rude, trolling, or spamming don’t downvote someone! SMH
PLEASE DO NOT DOWN VOTE an opinion you disagree with, it can and will get the poster banned. BP FIX YOUR SYSTEM
I will downvote a post or opinion I don't like or disagree with, if there is something bugging me. But I barely downvote stuff, mostly upvote or ignore. I did downvote this comment I am replying to for example.
Load More Replies...This one is genetic. If you don't have the gene, cilantro tastes like soap. If you do have it, it's lovely and herbaceous.
Load More Replies...Kombucha tastes like toes dropped in battery acid yet it's all the rage.
Why isn't foie gras on the list? Apart from the vile treatment of geese it also tastes really bad. I tried it once many years ago and had to discreetly spit it out in my napkin.
What, steatitis on toast just doesn't do it for you?
Load More Replies...This just in: Food preferences are highly individual and everyone has different likes and dislikes. Shocking.
I think people just like to share their opinions, and then other people like to jump in to express how strongly they agree or disagree haha
Load More Replies...Mine would be hot dogs, but I have a good reason. When I was little I loved them, but one time I got the flu and spent all night puking them up. Now (25+ years later) my brain has those cross-linked so badly even the smell of hot dogs cooking makes me nauseous. Most types of sausage are also guilty by association for me.
For me, the same happened with mashed potatoes. I slowly get to be able to eat (or even enjoy) it, but only if it's made in a bery specific way and from scratch. I think I'll never be able to eat the powdered one from the box (that I used to eat as I child before the flu) again.
Load More Replies...Blackberries can kill. I’m trying to be lighthearted about this but my dad fell whilst picking blackberries today. We didn’t find him until it was too late. Bye dad. 14.03.37 - 05.08.22
Omg, are you saying you lost your dad, today, just like that? I'm so sorry to read this, conincidentally this was my father's death anniversary too. My heartfelt condolences to you.
Load More Replies...Hmmm, it's not a difficult thought to grasp - people like different foods. Not everyone likes the same thing. What's 'great' for one person is 'taste like soap' to another. This doesn't mean the item has been overhyped, it just means you don't like it much. That's fine. Move on and eat the foods you love.
For me it’s mustard, I literally cannot stand the taste. And I don’t get how people can enjoy banana and avocado, so slimy and mushy, ugh. but, to each their own 🤷♀️
I get why people are hating on the overly processed foods, like Nutella, poptarts, etc... but sometimes the sh!tty food is what hits the spot
Oh. And nut milk. How did this one get left off? I'm not saying that it's all bad. I rather enjoy some of it.... BUT. But, but, but.... IT'S NOT MILK. It's nut juice. You're drinking nut juice. Who's with me?
What's the problem with drinking nut juice? Hardly a new development.
Load More Replies...How did mayo not make this list? I know folks love it but those of us that don't, REALLY DON'T.
Noooooooooooooo 😫. Maybe it's my national bias but chips are just sad potato sticks without mayo
Load More Replies...For me, alcohol. People don't believe me when I say I don't like it. I don't dislike it because it's bad for you. I dislike it because they all taste terrible to me.
Most of them aren't even hyped, but discarding a food as being overrated without even trying it seems like an irrelevant opinion, I get not wanting to try something because you're repelled by the way it looks/feels but you can't call it overrated. Most of these are foods enjoyed by certain groups or are an acquired taste.
So many of these are foods I love but can't eat anymore because of allergies :( I should really stop reading posts like this because it makes me miss them even more!
I developed a shrimp allergy seemingly overnight. Now that I can't eat them and won't make them because I can't eat them, my husband has them every chance he gets when we go out to eat. F*****g bastard.
Load More Replies...The hype of these foods are great if you know how to cook or season them right. If you've had a bad experience with a food, then I can see how ppl don't understand the hype. For instance, my husband never liked Brussel sprouts his whole life but when we got married, I made it for him and he was worried that he would offend me by not eating them. I had him try mine, and now, its one of his vegetables I make and he can't get enough of them. So, just know what your doing can go a long way!
Broccoli. The taste is awful, but the texture! Makes me want to vomit!
I agree with all those items except sweet potato. However I hate the orange one, that overseas seems to be the only one. The red variety (kumara) only.
