People Are Joining This Thread Ranting About Overhyped Foods They Don’t Understand And Here Are 34 Of Them
It is probably impossible to find a food that everyone loves, there will always be someone who hates it with all their heart. Even the most common things that a lot of recipes may contain. It is interesting how different people can eat the same thing, but have a different reaction to the taste or even perceive it differently.
Even though the Latin maxim says that there is no point in disputing tastes, people love to give their opinions on food. Reddit user jamboamericano wanted to know people’s opinions on foods that are hyped up but “quite simply suck.” They received 3k responses so take a look at the most popular ones that quite a lot of people agreed on.

I don't get the appeal of chili that is made to be as hot and spicy as humanly possible, to the point that it hurts to eat it. "I make my chili with the five hottest peppers known to man and a dash of snake venom to kick it up a notch" Why?
That, and tofu.
Instagram food (so foods with so much added nonsense just for the sake of a photo, not for taste)
Caviar
I feel like whoever buys that s**t doesn't actually like it and uses it to flaunt their money
This is just silly. There are types of caviar that aren't expensive, particularly because you're not meant to shovel it in with a fork. I absolutely love caviar, and it has nothing to do with showing off or being rich (I'm not).
Oysters, I've never tried them and I never want to, they just look like big boogers to me, sorry for the mental image.
Macarons. Expensive air cookies that still manage to stick to your teeth.
Kombucha. I know it is a drink, but still
Liver. Just......no.
As someone from the UK I don't get why so many people here love mushy peas. I find peas relatively tasteless and gross as they are, mushing them just makes the texture gross as well
Kale. I don’t care how it’s prepared, there’s just no point to it.
If it's prepared and cooked properly, Kale is delicious. Especially Scottish black kale. My family loves it and it's full of nutrients like iron and vitamins.
Lobster. I uh, I don't get it. It always tastes a bit flavorless and just alright to me. Then I see people dip it in butter and yea thats fine and all and it tastes great, but then I get the feeling I'm just tasting the butter and what the f**k is the point of this $30 dish exactly?
Like a lot of shellfish, it has to be fresh from the ocean. If you have it in a tank at the supermarket where they just sit there it's not worth it. Back on PEI, Canada; 70% of houses are having fresh lobster on Mother's Day right off the boat. Can't beat it.
This will not be popular…Taco Bell.
Only edible if it’s absolutely drenched in hot sauce. It’s mushy, bland, makes me bloated, and strangely, sometimes gives me a headache. 2 out of 5 times found a hair in the burrito. I gave up.
Or if you’re drunk, the bar closed, and there’s no other place open.
Vegemite
Australians are getting a little irate at the dissing of our vegemite. Don't knock it till you've had a warm toast with melted butter and a gentle scrape of vegemite across the surface. Think of it like Wasabi, you have to start with a wee little bit then work your way up to a bit more each time.
I did try some Marmite (at my mother's insistence), which is very similar to Vegemite, and I hated it. It tasted like ear wax. She thinks it's delicious. Maybe it's an acquired taste? Everyone's taste buds are different. It's interesting how wildly tastes can vary between countries and cultures.
Load More Replies...Marmite (the UK equivalent) is so divisive we even say something is 'marmite', i.e. you either hate it or love it, no inbetween.
My husband is very annoying, he says he 'doesn't mind' marmite! Argh 🤯
Load More Replies...If you enjoy umami flavours and you don't like Vegemite, then you're probably not doing it right. My method: Toast your bread and let it cool. Apply a generous coating of butter (not margarine), on top of the butter add a thin scrape of Vegemite and you have perfection on a plate.
Americans will never understand the deliciousness of Vegemite. Growing up in the states I always knew if I had a Vegemite and celery sandwich for lunch people would be disgusted. Sweet. More for me! I think they slather it in thick like peanut butter. I like a heavy schemer but even that'd be to much for me.
The peanut butter mention is apt. Me and UK pals would have the "no, your food is grosser!" debates, and they always offered up peanut butter and jelly sandwiches as the US counterpart. Unless you've had it from childhood, it's hard to acquire a taste for it, either way.
Load More Replies...I want to try vegemite to say I've tried it but can't find it in Canada. Marmite I can find and is way too salty. Is it the same thing? Can anyone confirm?
No they are not the same. Different flavour and texture. Yes Vegemite it somewhat salty but it's best eaten with butter and just a light scrape of vegemite. It's the bomb.
Load More Replies...Marmite is far far better. I once tried Vegemite, needed therapy afterwards.
Vegemite / Marmite is quite interesting but you have to use it sparingly! On toast or crackers, it's pretty good
I love vegemite on warm toast, on pancakes, on saladas/rice thins and the best is a cheese and vegemite sandwich better if it's a toastie
Have you tried cheese and vegemite on dry weet-bix? My mum made it for us as kids but I don't think I'd like it now. Cheese and vegemite toasties are the best though.
Load More Replies...Pretty much the same thing as the UK's Marmite. It IS very strong, but you are only supposed to scrape it on thinly - not slather it on like Americans do with peanut butter. I think it tastes very strongly of beef, even though it's not, but you really don't need a lot, and people outside the UK (and Australia) don't seem to get that. LOL!
Hell no, the drop beats will attack them if they don't have Vegemite.
I just tried marmite for the first time! With butter, it is actually quite good! And full of B vitamins. I might keep at it!
Don't fo get the echidna grenades and our kangaroos too- I mean we ride them to school- may as well ride them TO WAR!
Vegemite is disgusting!! And yes, I'm Australian born and bred. Nothing anyone can say will ever change my mind
that stuff is just plain nasty!!! my granny use to special order it from the grocery store she use to shop at, every time i saw it i ran the other way...hahaha
Brit here, I have Australian family and they send me massive pots of this for Christmas, I’m 46 and also a marmite lover… please visit me in hell
Well, as an Australian, I grew up on Vegemite sandwiches. I still love it on hot buttered toast. And then there’s it’s’ brother Cheeseybite.❤️❤️
I tried it once, the Australian way, and must say that the few minutes it took to prepare is time that I'll never get back and that I will remember the taste to my dying days...after just one bite. On the plus side however, it makes for a great savory enhancer to so many dishes and can be used in much the same way as fish sauce, anchovies, etc..
I also use it as a floor enhancer for stews etc, and to strike plant cuttings, the yeast is a really good root developer...half tspoon dissolved in a cup of boiling water, cooled, dip the cutting in, new plant in 8ish weeks.
Load More Replies...I'm Australian and can't eat the stuff,it gives me terrible heartburn.I eat Promite instead.
Vegemite is something your brought up on If your not from Australia it's a hard sell for anyone
I've never left america in my life can someone explain this to me
I've had the UK version, Marmite, and it tastes as if salt had a b******e and you licked it.
One American TV show described Vegemite as 'looks like axle grease, smells bad, tastes worse, and their infant children love it'. I've introduced a number of Americans to Vegemite. Most fled screaming, but some came back for more. They enjoyed the change from the ubiquitous corn-syrup sweetness in American foods.
I've tried it and it kind of just tasted like weird salt.
The trick is don't have too much. I see foreigners try by the spoonful. No wonder it's gross if you eat it like that. It's an acquired taste, but I do know some Aussies who love it thick
For goodness sake, not even as strong as Marmite! That said, both are those foods you absolutely love or hate! On hot buttered toast I love. Great umame taste full of B vitamins.
As an Australian I could never understand the attraction, it tastes like thickened soy sauce, way too salty.
Five Guys. Not sure if it’s the same as in the US (I’m in the UK) or I just got a dodgy meal but it was just greasy overpriced mess.
Pop tarts
Hot Cheetos. I absolutely love spicy foods but they taste like bleeda**. whatever that means
Hot Flamin' Cheetos is my guilty pleasure. My butt does not thank me the next day, though
Truffle oil
The majority of truffle oil isn't actually made with truffles. The main ingredient is a chemical designed in a laboratory to mimic the aroma of truffles (synthetic 2,4-dithiapentane).
Beets. My wife tried to convince me to like them by saying "they taste like dirt!" Needless to say, this was an ineffective approach.
Ranch dressing. It’s vile. People put it on EVERYTHING. gross. Just stop it.
When it was first introduced, it was a packet mix that you combined with mayonnaise and real buttermilk. It was delicious then. You can still buy the mix and that's the only way to prepare it IMHO.
Olives
Kimchi, it just doesn't taste as interesting as people say it does
Shrimp, and any other sea-roaches
Shrimp is pretty cool if it's cooked well. Not overcooked and not drenched in seasoning. With most of these you just got to cook it lightly with minimal additions to keep the true taste.
Seafood. It stinks, it looks gross, and every time I've been convinced to try it it's been rank. My husband and I have agreed many times that we'd have to be starving to death before we ever considered seafood as a meal. I do not understand how anybody can enjoy it. It creates a visceral negative reaction in me.
I love seafood, but I'm careful where I source it. No dodgy diner seafood, please.
Food: Sweet potato
Drink: Kombucha
I can't understand the enjoyment of either, as both taste like dirt
I don't think it sucks but I don't get why popcorn is so cherished.
I don't like the flavor, the texture, or the f*****g kernels that get stuck in my teeth. The smell is always terrible to me and it lingers.
But what I really hate is having to explain to people offering it to me that I actually don't like popcorn, no, I really don't, yes, even that type, yes it's a popular snack, no, I really don't like it.
Reading these posts makes me think these are a lot of pizza, burgers, and fries fans. It is interesting to branch out and try other foods. I don't know why some of these foods are considered to be "hyped". Who hypes tofu????
I think some are conflating over hyped with simply being well known. To me, over hyped is akin to saying it's the best and nothing will compare to it.
Load More Replies...Seems like people love hating on some of the healthiest foods you can eat. They might not all taste great, but your body will certainly thank you in the long run.
I think a lot of healthy foods can taste great if you learn how to prepare them well and the way you like best!
Load More Replies...This thread makes no sense! Someone likes some type of food, some don't.
I would say the most overhyped things I've tasted were some of the major food chain meals, didn't live up to the hype. There were some others but those are local to the region and might not be so common elsewhere....but none lived up to the hype.
Are people f*****g serious? They are downvoting the people who say they hate pickles or mushrooms just because they do? People seem to forget that too many downvotes gets a person BANNED and shouldn’t be used to express dislike for someone’s opinion. Unless the person is going out of their damn way to be frigging rude, trolling, or spamming don’t downvote someone! SMH
PLEASE DO NOT DOWN VOTE an opinion you disagree with, it can and will get the poster banned. BP FIX YOUR SYSTEM
I will downvote a post or opinion I don't like or disagree with, if there is something bugging me. But I barely downvote stuff, mostly upvote or ignore. I did downvote this comment I am replying to for example.
Load More Replies...This one is genetic. If you don't have the gene, cilantro tastes like soap. If you do have it, it's lovely and herbaceous.
Load More Replies...Kombucha tastes like toes dropped in battery acid yet it's all the rage.
Why isn't foie gras on the list? Apart from the vile treatment of geese it also tastes really bad. I tried it once many years ago and had to discreetly spit it out in my napkin.
What, steatitis on toast just doesn't do it for you?
Load More Replies...This just in: Food preferences are highly individual and everyone has different likes and dislikes. Shocking.
I think people just like to share their opinions, and then other people like to jump in to express how strongly they agree or disagree haha
Load More Replies...Mine would be hot dogs, but I have a good reason. When I was little I loved them, but one time I got the flu and spent all night puking them up. Now (25+ years later) my brain has those cross-linked so badly even the smell of hot dogs cooking makes me nauseous. Most types of sausage are also guilty by association for me.
For me, the same happened with mashed potatoes. I slowly get to be able to eat (or even enjoy) it, but only if it's made in a bery specific way and from scratch. I think I'll never be able to eat the powdered one from the box (that I used to eat as I child before the flu) again.
Load More Replies...Blackberries can kill. I’m trying to be lighthearted about this but my dad fell whilst picking blackberries today. We didn’t find him until it was too late. Bye dad. 14.03.37 - 05.08.22
Omg, are you saying you lost your dad, today, just like that? I'm so sorry to read this, conincidentally this was my father's death anniversary too. My heartfelt condolences to you.
Load More Replies...Hmmm, it's not a difficult thought to grasp - people like different foods. Not everyone likes the same thing. What's 'great' for one person is 'taste like soap' to another. This doesn't mean the item has been overhyped, it just means you don't like it much. That's fine. Move on and eat the foods you love.
For me it’s mustard, I literally cannot stand the taste. And I don’t get how people can enjoy banana and avocado, so slimy and mushy, ugh. but, to each their own 🤷♀️
I get why people are hating on the overly processed foods, like Nutella, poptarts, etc... but sometimes the sh!tty food is what hits the spot
Oh. And nut milk. How did this one get left off? I'm not saying that it's all bad. I rather enjoy some of it.... BUT. But, but, but.... IT'S NOT MILK. It's nut juice. You're drinking nut juice. Who's with me?
What's the problem with drinking nut juice? Hardly a new development.
Load More Replies...How did mayo not make this list? I know folks love it but those of us that don't, REALLY DON'T.
Noooooooooooooo 😫. Maybe it's my national bias but chips are just sad potato sticks without mayo
Load More Replies...For me, alcohol. People don't believe me when I say I don't like it. I don't dislike it because it's bad for you. I dislike it because they all taste terrible to me.
Most of them aren't even hyped, but discarding a food as being overrated without even trying it seems like an irrelevant opinion, I get not wanting to try something because you're repelled by the way it looks/feels but you can't call it overrated. Most of these are foods enjoyed by certain groups or are an acquired taste.
So many of these are foods I love but can't eat anymore because of allergies :( I should really stop reading posts like this because it makes me miss them even more!
I developed a shrimp allergy seemingly overnight. Now that I can't eat them and won't make them because I can't eat them, my husband has them every chance he gets when we go out to eat. F*****g bastard.
Load More Replies...The hype of these foods are great if you know how to cook or season them right. If you've had a bad experience with a food, then I can see how ppl don't understand the hype. I had him try mine, and now, its one of his vegetables I make and he can't get enough of them. So, just know what your doing can go a long way!
Broccoli. The taste is awful, but the texture! Makes me want to vomit!
I agree with all those items except sweet potato. However I hate the orange one, that overseas seems to be the only one. The red variety (kumara) only.
