People Are Joining This Thread Ranting About Overhyped Foods They Don’t Understand And Here Are 34 Of Them
It is probably impossible to find a food that everyone loves, there will always be someone who hates it with all their heart. Even the most common things that a lot of recipes may contain. It is interesting how different people can eat the same thing, but have a different reaction to the taste or even perceive it differently.
Even though the Latin maxim says that there is no point in disputing tastes, people love to give their opinions on food. Reddit user jamboamericano wanted to know people’s opinions on foods that are hyped up but “quite simply suck.” They received 3k responses so take a look at the most popular ones that quite a lot of people agreed on.

I don't get the appeal of chili that is made to be as hot and spicy as humanly possible, to the point that it hurts to eat it. "I make my chili with the five hottest peppers known to man and a dash of snake venom to kick it up a notch" Why?
That, and tofu.
Instagram food (so foods with so much added nonsense just for the sake of a photo, not for taste)
Caviar
I feel like whoever buys that s**t doesn't actually like it and uses it to flaunt their money
This is just silly. There are types of caviar that aren't expensive, particularly because you're not meant to shovel it in with a fork. I absolutely love caviar, and it has nothing to do with showing off or being rich (I'm not).
Oysters, I've never tried them and I never want to, they just look like big boogers to me, sorry for the mental image.
Macarons. Expensive air cookies that still manage to stick to your teeth.
Kombucha. I know it is a drink, but still
Liver. Just......no.
As someone from the UK I don't get why so many people here love mushy peas. I find peas relatively tasteless and gross as they are, mushing them just makes the texture gross as well
Kale. I don’t care how it’s prepared, there’s just no point to it.
If it's prepared and cooked properly, Kale is delicious. Especially Scottish black kale. My family loves it and it's full of nutrients like iron and vitamins.
Lobster. I uh, I don't get it. It always tastes a bit flavorless and just alright to me. Then I see people dip it in butter and yea thats fine and all and it tastes great, but then I get the feeling I'm just tasting the butter and what the f**k is the point of this $30 dish exactly?
Like a lot of shellfish, it has to be fresh from the ocean. If you have it in a tank at the supermarket where they just sit there it's not worth it. Back on PEI, Canada; 70% of houses are having fresh lobster on Mother's Day right off the boat. Can't beat it.
This will not be popular…Taco Bell.
Only edible if it’s absolutely drenched in hot sauce. It’s mushy, bland, makes me bloated, and strangely, sometimes gives me a headache. 2 out of 5 times found a hair in the burrito. I gave up.
Or if you’re drunk, the bar closed, and there’s no other place open.
Five Guys. Not sure if it’s the same as in the US (I’m in the UK) or I just got a dodgy meal but it was just greasy overpriced mess.
Pop tarts
Hot Cheetos. I absolutely love spicy foods but they taste like bleeda**. whatever that means
Hot Flamin' Cheetos is my guilty pleasure. My butt does not thank me the next day, though
Truffle oil
The majority of truffle oil isn't actually made with truffles. The main ingredient is a chemical designed in a laboratory to mimic the aroma of truffles (synthetic 2,4-dithiapentane).
Beets. My wife tried to convince me to like them by saying "they taste like dirt!" Needless to say, this was an ineffective approach.
Ranch dressing. It’s vile. People put it on EVERYTHING. gross. Just stop it.
When it was first introduced, it was a packet mix that you combined with mayonnaise and real buttermilk. It was delicious then. You can still buy the mix and that's the only way to prepare it IMHO.
Avocado!
Avocados are one of my most favorite things in the world. Guacamole is so good. Avocado with a little apple cider vinegar & olive oil... pinch of salt ..... Aaahhh, I'm making myself hungry!
Oooh, I never thought about ACV on it! I usually do a splash of lime juice with salt and pepper. But I might have to try the vinegar some time, thanks for the idea!
Load More Replies...Avocado is best fresh with just a slight pinch of salt...oh yeah.
Don’t you dare. Avocados are the best. Guacamole is the best. Fight me.
Always seems slimey to me. Green slime, like something from Ghostbusters.
A good avocado is like manna from heaven. A bad avocado... literally a punch in the arm is better than a bad avocado. Unforch you can't access good avocado unless you have your own tree and it's at least a few decades old.
We used to have avocado trees when I lived in SoCal. When it's five minutes from tree to plate, still warm from the sun, with that perfect taste and texture.... But then I lived in the UK, and experienced the saddest avocados ever. I smuggled some back from SoCal once so my local friends could understand what we're banging on about with "OMG CALIFORNIA HASS AVOCADOS!"
Load More Replies...Maybe I tried a lacklustre one, but it just tasted really bland to me. Can't understand the hype, but I would never hate on anyone who loves them.
It is bland by itself - give it another go with a squeeze of lemon juice for acidity, and some salt. That's the bare minimum. Also good with some black pepper, or tabasco sauce, or a wee bit of garlic (you don't want to overpower the avocado though)
Load More Replies...I love this as dessert; sliced with condensed milk and cold. It’s the bomb.
I get the hate as I hated it for a long time, until I got all the recipes and realised that avocado o it's own is like eating butter but like butter add some good stuff and you're all set!
they taste like mowed grass, before you ask how i know, i ate grass as a double dare with my cousins once so thats how i know
I honestly love just slicing one open and going to town with a spoon; nothing else needed.
No no no I used to like them but they have been over hyped. I can eat guacamole but no other way.
I love avocados... just split in half, seed removed and lightly smeared with good mayo and a bit of fresh ground black pepper! Guac is good also, but this trend of avo on everything from toast to whatever is just overdone.
It is a ball of mushy earth flavor. Can be used to enhance other things for sure, but I'm not tearing into an avocado. Avocado smoothies are fantastic, and avocado on some raw seafood dishes really can balance out whatever else is there.
LOVE avocados. When I was pregnant with my daughter I SERIOUSLY craved guacamole. I literally ate a small bowl of it for breakfast with a spoon.
Always buy them hard, stem in place, put them on the counter by coffee station. Squeeze the shoulder lightly each morning. When it starts to give a little, pop the stem off. If it's green underneath it's good today or tomorrow. If you need to keep put in the fridge. After a while of doing this and checking each day you will get real good at the timing and not loose so many to over ripe.
I grew up hating avocados. Then as an adult I found ways to prepare it that were actually good and realized I didn't hate them, they were just presented to me wrong. Now I love them.!
I agree. I have to pick the slimy foul things out of far too many dishes these days.
So good and actually a fat that is good for you. Just mush with a little lime, salt, and pepper. Best thing ever. When I was a kid way back when we had a tree in the yard and would put it on toast. Then it became this weird thing they add a bunch of c**p to and charge $15.
Avocado, red onion, grilled chicken breast, crispy bacon, parmesan, olive oil and balsamic vinegar. Combo made in heaven.
Diced avocado, sliced tiny tomatoes and chopped-up mozzarella, with a bit of balsamico vinegar, hemp oil, S&P...MMMMMMHHHH!!!
Clearly you live somewhere where they’re not grown locally, so you’re not getting them fresh. Living in San Diego- the Mecca of avocado farming, we get spoiled.
A restaurant we have here that is closed now (Europa) used to make scrambled eggs with avo. You'd think it would be horrible but it was delicious!
I hate them, they mess with my head. I see something green and expect freshness and juicyness. What do I get? A mouth full of fatty slime.
Ugh, it's like eating a piece of butter. And people have gone so nuts that there are places where it's impossible to get a sandwich without it.
Thank you. I feel I am the only one in America that hates them. They have the taste and texture of kindergarten paste.
avocado toast is probably my favorite breakfast that is actually good for you
avocados are horrible for the environment. each one 150g avocado contributes 850 grams of GHG and take 227-320 liters of water to grow. While those that love them are quick to point out that they aren't as damaging as meat, that doesn't negate the fact that they are one of the worst non-meat food products (along with strawberries, cranberries, corn, spinach, almonds and soybeans) that just continue to grow in popularity while the masses continue to repeat the refrain of "not my fault the planet's f*cked up"
BLTs with avacado, mayo, and toasted bread is one of my favorite sandwiches
I do like avocados. But I have to say, ordering "avocado toast" in a restaurant...really, you're going to pay ten bucks for a couple of pieces of bread with a little avocado on top?
Avocados are the bomb diggity! I love them in a salad, on toast , in guacamole, and just by themselves.
Yum! We eat them in so many ways!! Once made an avocado "sauce" for pasta - came out SO good!!
In the Netherlands it can be tricky to get good ones, I always say 'soft skin, hard flesh' (don't think dirty, you!) You just take them into your hand and softly squeeze them, when you can squeeze the skin but feel the flesh underneath is hard, you have a good one. Works 9/10 times for me. The one time it doesn't work is because the pit is rotting first.
I always have a little bit of a problem seeing where the avocado goes on a dish, so I can't use it when I'm just throwing things together. I wish I could do more with it, because it's very tasty
Avocado with kala namak, ginger, lemon and nutmeg on fresh bread is absolutely delicious!!!
I hated avocado. Then I had some proper guac and I've come around. I'll eat it, I just made brownies with avocados last week. I won't go out of my way for them tho
squeeze lemon or lime and sprinkle salt on them they're so good
Olives
Kimchi, it just doesn't taste as interesting as people say it does
Shrimp, and any other sea-roaches
Shrimp is pretty cool if it's cooked well. Not overcooked and not drenched in seasoning. With most of these you just got to cook it lightly with minimal additions to keep the true taste.
Seafood. It stinks, it looks gross, and every time I've been convinced to try it it's been rank. My husband and I have agreed many times that we'd have to be starving to death before we ever considered seafood as a meal. I do not understand how anybody can enjoy it. It creates a visceral negative reaction in me.
I love seafood, but I'm careful where I source it. No dodgy diner seafood, please.
Food: Sweet potato
Drink: Kombucha
I can't understand the enjoyment of either, as both taste like dirt
I don't think it sucks but I don't get why popcorn is so cherished.
I don't like the flavor, the texture, or the f*****g kernels that get stuck in my teeth. The smell is always terrible to me and it lingers.
But what I really hate is having to explain to people offering it to me that I actually don't like popcorn, no, I really don't, yes, even that type, yes it's a popular snack, no, I really don't like it.
Reading these posts makes me think these are a lot of pizza, burgers, and fries fans. It is interesting to branch out and try other foods. I don't know why some of these foods are considered to be "hyped". Who hypes tofu????
I think some are conflating over hyped with simply being well known. To me, over hyped is akin to saying it's the best and nothing will compare to it.
Load More Replies...Seems like people love hating on some of the healthiest foods you can eat. They might not all taste great, but your body will certainly thank you in the long run.
I think a lot of healthy foods can taste great if you learn how to prepare them well and the way you like best!
Load More Replies...This thread makes no sense! Someone likes some type of food, some don't.
I would say the most overhyped things I've tasted were some of the major food chain meals, didn't live up to the hype. There were some others but those are local to the region and might not be so common elsewhere....but none lived up to the hype.
Are people f*****g serious? They are downvoting the people who say they hate pickles or mushrooms just because they do? People seem to forget that too many downvotes gets a person BANNED and shouldn’t be used to express dislike for someone’s opinion. Unless the person is going out of their damn way to be frigging rude, trolling, or spamming don’t downvote someone! SMH
PLEASE DO NOT DOWN VOTE an opinion you disagree with, it can and will get the poster banned. BP FIX YOUR SYSTEM
I will downvote a post or opinion I don't like or disagree with, if there is something bugging me. But I barely downvote stuff, mostly upvote or ignore. I did downvote this comment I am replying to for example.
Load More Replies...This one is genetic. If you don't have the gene, cilantro tastes like soap. If you do have it, it's lovely and herbaceous.
Load More Replies...Kombucha tastes like toes dropped in battery acid yet it's all the rage.
Why isn't foie gras on the list? Apart from the vile treatment of geese it also tastes really bad. I tried it once many years ago and had to discreetly spit it out in my napkin.
What, steatitis on toast just doesn't do it for you?
Load More Replies...This just in: Food preferences are highly individual and everyone has different likes and dislikes. Shocking.
I think people just like to share their opinions, and then other people like to jump in to express how strongly they agree or disagree haha
Load More Replies...Mine would be hot dogs, but I have a good reason. When I was little I loved them, but one time I got the flu and spent all night puking them up. Now (25+ years later) my brain has those cross-linked so badly even the smell of hot dogs cooking makes me nauseous. Most types of sausage are also guilty by association for me.
For me, the same happened with mashed potatoes. I slowly get to be able to eat (or even enjoy) it, but only if it's made in a bery specific way and from scratch. I think I'll never be able to eat the powdered one from the box (that I used to eat as I child before the flu) again.
Load More Replies...Blackberries can kill. I’m trying to be lighthearted about this but my dad fell whilst picking blackberries today. We didn’t find him until it was too late. Bye dad. 14.03.37 - 05.08.22
Omg, are you saying you lost your dad, today, just like that? I'm so sorry to read this, conincidentally this was my father's death anniversary too. My heartfelt condolences to you.
Load More Replies...Hmmm, it's not a difficult thought to grasp - people like different foods. Not everyone likes the same thing. What's 'great' for one person is 'taste like soap' to another. This doesn't mean the item has been overhyped, it just means you don't like it much. That's fine. Move on and eat the foods you love.
For me it’s mustard, I literally cannot stand the taste. And I don’t get how people can enjoy banana and avocado, so slimy and mushy, ugh. but, to each their own 🤷♀️
I get why people are hating on the overly processed foods, like Nutella, poptarts, etc... but sometimes the sh!tty food is what hits the spot
Oh. And nut milk. How did this one get left off? I'm not saying that it's all bad. I rather enjoy some of it.... BUT. But, but, but.... IT'S NOT MILK. It's nut juice. You're drinking nut juice. Who's with me?
What's the problem with drinking nut juice? Hardly a new development.
Load More Replies...How did mayo not make this list? I know folks love it but those of us that don't, REALLY DON'T.
Noooooooooooooo 😫. Maybe it's my national bias but chips are just sad potato sticks without mayo
Load More Replies...For me, alcohol. People don't believe me when I say I don't like it. I don't dislike it because it's bad for you. I dislike it because they all taste terrible to me.
Most of them aren't even hyped, but discarding a food as being overrated without even trying it seems like an irrelevant opinion, I get not wanting to try something because you're repelled by the way it looks/feels but you can't call it overrated. Most of these are foods enjoyed by certain groups or are an acquired taste.
So many of these are foods I love but can't eat anymore because of allergies :( I should really stop reading posts like this because it makes me miss them even more!
I developed a shrimp allergy seemingly overnight. Now that I can't eat them and won't make them because I can't eat them, my husband has them every chance he gets when we go out to eat. F*****g bastard.
Load More Replies...The hype of these foods are great if you know how to cook or season them right. If you've had a bad experience with a food, then I can see how ppl don't understand the hype. I had him try mine, and now, its one of his vegetables I make and he can't get enough of them. So, just know what your doing can go a long way!
Broccoli. The taste is awful, but the texture! Makes me want to vomit!
I agree with all those items except sweet potato. However I hate the orange one, that overseas seems to be the only one. The red variety (kumara) only.
