27-Year-Old Woman To Become First Female Ever To Visit Every Country On Earth

If someone traveled to 50 countries, we’d be impressed. If they traveled to 100 we’d be super impressed. But if they traveled to every single country in the world, and became the first documented female, youngest American, AND fastest traveler to visit all 196 countries on the planet….well, that would leave us pretty amazed indeed.

But that’s exactly what Cassandra De Pecol is doing. The 27-year-old from Connecticut has already visited 181 countries since July 2015, and with only 15 countries remaining and 40 days to go, she’s well on course to break the Guinness World Record for the fastest person to travel to all Sovereign States (plus an additional 11 countries). Her amazing journey is called Expedition196 and she’s traveling as an Ambassador for Peace on behalf of the International Institute for Peace Through Tourism. We might not be able to follow in her footsteps, but we can at least follow her inspirational journey via Instagram. Go Cassandra!

She started off in Palau back in July 2015

And she’s already visited 181 countries since then

She’s hoping to become the first documented woman to travel to all 196 countries

Cassandra only has 15 more to visit in the next 40 days

If she does it she’ll break the Guinness World Record for the fastest person to travel to all Sovereign States

She’s traveling as an Ambassador for Peace on behalf of the International Institute for Peace Through Tourism

The trip has cost almost $200,000 so far but the costs are covered by sponsors

She also uses her Instagram as a platform for advertising in exchange for free accommodation

She’s only 27 but she’s already seen more than most will see in a lifetime

    From meeting lion cubs

And skiing in the mountains of Colorado

And taking in beautiful sights like this view of Mostar bridge in Bosnia and Herzegovina

Cassandra doesn’t go anywhere without her camera

I lost interest in the story when I saw her pictures with those poor exploited animals :/ one expects more ecological awareness and sensitivity from a "world traveler"!

Sorry to be negative, but these pictures are so stereotypical...everyone to his own preference, but for me travelling for the sake of arriving is business travel...travelling for the sake of travelling is leisure!

nice feat but I totally prefer to visit the world at my pace (and not just getting off a plane, taking a picture of myself on a beach and getting on the next one)

She's 27. I'm sure she'll do a lot more traveling in her life and, when she's not trying to break speed records, she'll do so at a more leisurely pace.

Surely $200,000 could have been better spent on helping to achieve 'peace' through real education projects than sending a woman about what appears to be a glorified holiday. I assume there is better information about what she is doing (somewhere!) but from these pictures which just amount to a bunch of very stereotypical selfies, she may as well just photo shopped herself into pictures!

Zoe, I was going to say something nearly the same myself. Although this is a great idea and i'm sure she's having a great time, I fail to see how the $200,000 to fund her travels is actually helping to achieve peace, when, like you said, all of the photos are like holiday pictures. I think I would feel better looking at it if she had photos of herself helping communities or something that shows she is trying to promote peace (if that can be shown in a photo).

While I am definitely envious of anyone able to travel this much, a) how is that such a great accomplishment when you don't have to worry about pesky little things like expenses and days of leave from work? and b) (as others have pointed out) somehow it seems a lot less like a noble eye-opening goal when you treat it like a checklist to complete for some arbitrary accolade.

I don't think anyone read the article. She is trying for a record. She is being sponsored for that. She's not saying she's taking a leisurely prance around the world.

It's very funny because she is complainning about people is not reading the post but she did it the same with yours (Or if she read it, she has no reading comprehension). It was a joke Hanna, just a joke. If a new country is proclaimed, Cassandra need to start again, get it?

Look at the "travel" map! Most places she only went to one place. One of the most ridiculous "travel" posts I've ever seen. 181 countries in 17 months is not travelling, it's just ticking boxes to get instagram photos. Look how much of Russia, China, Brazil, Australia and even New Zealand she has "travelled". I'm from NZ and by landing in Auckland does not count as travelling the country. Good on her for getting paid to do it but don't count this story as a travel story any more than a "I'm a hot blonde girl getting paid for international travel photos and setting BS records" story. PS I'm one of those people that's been to 100 countries but it took me 10 years because I worked at home and I wanted to actually travel those countries. (And I'm not hot, but I did it).

What is the point of this? A free vacation to build her social following? I don't see anything close to be a "peace ambassador." She's visiting the best these countries have to offer. Try going past the tourist areas and actually helping the poor people if you're going to try to spin this as some humanitarian effort.

North Korea/Somalia, you can get in. But a lone female into Saudi Arabia is a no-no plus they don't allow tourists in. That's going to be my stumbling block when I start running out of countries to visit.

What is the use of this social media account other than making "normal" People jealous? I don't get it. "Traveling" around the world with a backup team for getting visa and everything paid may be fun for yourself, but this is nothing remarkable or important or inspirating, it's more like: "I'm a good looking women, convinced someone to give me a lot of money and I now show everyone what a lucky girl I am". Give me 200.000$ and I will really change the world to be a better place.

Agreed. And I've never understood why travel is considered an "accomplishment" anyway. Millions and millions of average people travel and buy things and walk around and take average photos to share with their average friends. No shame in going and having fun, but it's not an accomplishment, no matter how many places you visit.

Sounds like a bit of a novelty. I just got back from my 192nd country over many years but I go to experience the culture, see the sites and to meet the locals. No point visiting them all just to get in the record book as you have not had an experience I doubt that she remembers much about the places she visited. Such a shame.

I actually feel sorry for her. I work in the travel industry in Asia. We very often hear of people saying been there = ticking that country off the list. But what has she experienced in each of the countries that she has visited? Absolutely nothing!!! Staying longer in a country should be encouraged by all of us that work in the travel industry. And travelling like Cassandra De Pecol is doing should be discouraged. Please people when you travel don't try and cram 3 or 4 countries in to your holiday time. Choose one and really embrace the country that your visiting and get to understand the country and the people. This is the way you should be travelling. And if you read this and are ever in Asia then get in touch with me and my travel company 'See Asia Differently and will show you a true travelling experience.

I used to glamorise "travelled to xx countries by xx age" too, until I realised in the process of doing it, that there are so many places to see within these countries (meanwhile, many countries are very similar). Instead of exploring them thoroughly, I was trying to hit an arbitrary number. Silly me.

It's not a real traveller soul to travel by plan all the time!So strange trips for 1 -2 days !I don't think she has some really interesting stories to tell afterwards! What a waste of time and money. This is not the point of "visiting" a country. This smacks of vanity and self congratulation. Try promoting peace through actually meeting people, living with them, learning a language and culture then educating.

I'm sure she isn't the first woman to ever do this, and it feels like cheating to me, with someone else paying for her to do it. I've been to 132 so far paying for all flights and hotels myself and while holding down a full time job (in 12 years). I'd argue that's far more impressive.

Hunh. Here is some perspective for you. I would rather visit 196 different areas in one country than visit one area in 196 different countries for some pathetic, pointless, and so-called "inspiring" world record. One can gain more productive knowledge in visiting 50 different regions and areas of one country such as Japan, for example, than by visiting only two regions or areas each in 50 different countries. Gaining wide knowledge in visiting one or two countries is more dignified than gaining sparse knowledge in visiting 100, and it takes more than two years to gain significant knowledge in one country. People who do things simply for world records are deprived of dignity and possibly could even be depraved.

Since she has been to all 196 countries, maybe she can share her experience of meeting Oromo tribe members in Somalia, or about her visit to Bratunac in Bosnia, or Huaxi, the richest village in China? No, she can't. She took a picture of the most touristy bridge in BAH, with exploited lion cubs somewhere in Africa and on the beach of the most famous tourist destinations Kiribati. With all that hopping she left a heavy footprint and hasn't even paid for that with her own money. This is not something to promote and be proud of. Skiing in Colorado does not mean you have seen the United States, visiting Red Square in Moscow does not mean you've been to Russia, taking a selfie in front of Eiffel Tower does not mean you've got to know France. It is not inspirational. And in no way this person, who is only 27, has seen more than most will see in a lifetime. Absolutely not.

196 countries in 18 months and 26 days. That's just under 3 days spent in each country. If you count in travel time, she basically spent a full day in each country uninterrupted by travel or at the most 1 1/2 days. You cannot fully appreciate a country in 1 to 1 1/2 days. All she did was fly into a country, take some pics doing something and fly on to the next country. Big frigging deal! Anyone with some money can do that. I traveled for a year in 2010 and I visited 22 countries. I spent time in those countries and soaked up the culture, scenery, people and learned new things. She did nothing more than acquire a lot of airmiles, break a record and take some pretty pics the one or so days she spent in each country. I'd like to see someone break a record going to each of the 196 countries and spend a week in each one and actually learn something about that country. I've hit 45 so far and wish I could hit all 196 but it's not in the cards.

I dont believe that a country is explored or termed "visited" unless you travel the length and breadth of it. As an example, I wouldnt say you have travelled Russia just by being to Moscow, There are other diverse cities that brings up complete picture of a country's culture. Visiting a country just to check it off, or have a presence of immigration stamp in passport shouldnt be the objective. I have been in the states for 4 years, after doing cross country drives twice, I see something new about this beautiful country.

So she spends like 2 days in a country? No offense but I don't envy that. I do want to visit every country but I want ample time to explore. I guess (according to this article) I could count every layover I've had or cities in between my travels to visit a city by road can be counted as "visited", but I don't because I lacked adequate time for experiences. Not impressed. Imay be wrong she may have stayed for way longer than 2 days, but according to my calculations she has 40days to travel to 15 countries and if this is any inclination to her previous trips then yeah only 2days.

In a way this is nice, she's an ambassador for peace, and in a way this is another example of the mindless exhibitionism that our Guinness (the book, not the pint) mentality pushes us to. Can you really 'see' all those countries in so short a time? What you are doing is seeing yourself see those countries because the only thing that is of interest to her is being there and leaving to the next destination, to gosh, break the record. I hope the +$200K will bring some useful returns. Otherwise, what self- indulgence.

I think that people are assuming the goal is noble when the goal is clearly to set a Guiness world record and pump up a social media account with selfies. I won't villify the woman, but i do see this for what it is... a publicity stunt. There is no purpose other than to visit the countries as quickly as possible. It is what it is. I visited over 170 countries in my lifetime and I doubt I'll hit 171. It kind of happened by accident... I just enjoy traveling. Maybe stories like this will at least encourage some other people to travel for a better reason.

Amazing as it is to have "been" to so many places, I too feel that by just stepping into a place hardly registers as to having experienced it. I personally always try to spend enough time in one place to do it justice. Having said that, there are places far too vast to conquer even in a couple of months.

Oh look, another attention whore who is incapable of doing anything "cool" without broadcasting it so as to show off to the world how cool she is. Also, visiting all of these countries with such speed is about as useless as those speed hikers who do things like hike the entire Appalachian Trail in a month-and-a-half.

I think she could travel because she has this passport, American passport.promoting peace..with a passport symbol of a bully country..who sponsored this self promoting agenda in the name of peace! It would carry more honor if it was a photo shoot contest to some magazine for whities. Not a racist but perhaps the sponsors are. I am jealous of the ability to travel without the hassles of visa and security checks..as long as there is a favored passport than another, world peace is a la la land!

I think it's a bit stupid. Trying to get off plane, get a chop in her passport and catch the next plane? When immigration officer asked the question of "what's the purpose of your visit : business or pleasure?". What would she say honestly? Wasting time, energy and money. I'm not impressed at all.

I'd say, seeing the world is more fun slowly. You learn about the culture, try the food, make friends with locals :D with a few countries every year, you can look forward to many more years of travel. Well good for her that it's free, if it's for the record and promoting "peace" anyway. To each his own! :)

I think that she's lucky to have experienced so much, but I hope she's genuinely having fun! I prefer to travel slow, like a few countries every year. That way, there'll be a lot to look forward to for years to come.

Privileged beautiful white cis woman travels World funded by donors ... Yea very impressive ... How will her visiting Syria bring peace to Syria? How will her visiting Saudi Arabia change anything? Will they suddenly stop using child soldiers in Africa because some white, blond haired American girl visited their country? Is Russia suddenly going to stop demonizing and persecuting LGBT people because she visited Moscow? Does her traveling around the World change the fact that you guys elected Trump to the White House (not you specifically but the American people in general)? No, it won't change anything. So why do her donors pay her 200.000 for a fake quest of peace if you can't even avoid Trump getting elected President to the most powerful country of the World, which even HOURS after the results came in, resulted in violent attacks on people of color, LGBT people, people with different religions, etc ...

Wouldn't everyone be able to travel the world on everyone elses money. Self indulgent girl, with the soul purpose of self. Thats great, but it is not impressive to me in any way shape or form. They are not saying who the "Sponsors are" Mommy and Daddy RICHIe RICH perhaps. Give me a break, this is the most dull un impressive travel article . Just a typical spoiled brat living off of somone elses money. No children, no responsibilities. of course she can go where ever she desires. Big Deal! And all expenses paid by "SPONSORS" sugar daddy's??? Take all her gifted money away and she will have to come home and work and figure it out how to pay her life expenses furst. Like Food, shelter.

She is luck that she got the sponsors. :P When I was in 8-10 standard I also had similar dream, but Now I feels like I never had finished to explore our country and understand it properly . I feel its not about the So called country name we need to travel its must be much more terrain and by different community/ group with with different culture base we need to travel. there will be much more interesting to see and experience if we go deep in those things rather than saying you visited 50 county, 100 countries. It's too stereotypical... Anyone with good sponsor can do like this things.

Although it's quite a feat, it's much more impressive when travelling is done by experiencing the culture you're visiting, not simply taking a photo and checking that off one's "bucket list" but to each their own. Hardly worth a Bored Panda article though.

The pictures are amazing, but the lion cub issue is legit. If it was a shelter and that lion is never going to see the wild, the photo still (however unintentionally) promotes cuddling with wild animals that are constantly being meddled with by humans.

Well said Bhilis. People complaining that she is not spending enough time in each country haven't read the aim of her goal. People saying she's got a lot of money so she is not doing "travelling properly", she was smart enough to get a sponsor. If you check the website you will see she has previously traveled for over a year with $2,000. I say fairplay to her and people's complaints are a reflection on themselves rather than this journey.

I think that its not very important things that she could do because if she could visit all countries with f*****g iranian passport for example it was awesome not with American passport that you can throw it to immigration officers face and he can't say anything. But with Iranian passport you have everything you need to enter the country and they may not let you in or behave badly and whatever. So i advice her to visit all countries with some low rank passport not with the highest rank passport in the world!

Wonderful. An amazing achievement to prove that you can have eyes and not see and have ears and not hear. One camping trip in your neighborhood will make you learn more about a country than this girl's global trotting. What she knows very well most probably are airplane seats! ..btw she looks truly beautiful. I could see her on many magazine covers. We could proudly call this project: The Travelling Barbie.

I am usually a very positive person, but this comment section is aggravating. Nobody can do anything anymore without a bunch of over-opinionated, ultra-entitled dweebs whining and crying about every single thing. We need something truly devastating to happen soon, so all these day care raised sissies get their heads out of their asses and actually have something legitimate to complain about.

Why does everyone have to be so negative, jelousy perhaps? at the end of the day im a year younger than her and have only been to 7 odd countries so I say good on her. There's no rules on how long you should stay in a country or what pictures you should take also animal exploitation and cruelty is all over the place. Horse racing is cruel and unnatural yet people all over bet money on it any animal that isn't in it's natural habitat is not right, keeping a hamster locked up in a cage isn't natural for it yet thousands of kids including myself have had them as pets im not saying im all for animal exploitation or anything like that but at least that tiger cub looks well and as others have written is safe from poatchers. Its a proven fact that animals have lived longer in captivity than they have the wild. Endangered species have been brought back from near extinction thanks to being saved taken into captivity and helped to breed. People are so judgemental when they only know half a story

I for one think it's something I would love to do and if someone offered to sponsor me I wud so take it, like any of ye that wud like to travel. Don't be jealous people, I wud so love to be able to afford to travel. I say well done to her and what a book she cud write. For the people who are giving out bout her taking pics on the beach and jetting off somewhere else to do the same, so what we all take selfies and if u say u don't then ur in denial. Of course she is gonna document her travels with pics, I mean she prob won't get the chance to do it again. Anyway rant over come on people where is the love in this world gone. It gets worse and worse with people everyday. I wudnt mind escaping all the jealousy and hate by travelling the world.

I think it's amazing to have a go at this. So many negative comments here. She's trying for a record. And how is this different than seniors getting on a coach tour for 14 days and seeing 12 countries? Are they really getting the full effect of each? No. They are getting a taste and someday, if they so wish, they can go back to peruse each country separately -- at least those that they wish to. I think it's an amazing record to break and good for her to be able to gather up enough sponsors to make it happen.

Okay everyone! Listen up! I have met her. I have been a part in her journey. She came to our resort in Oman. So she loves traveling. She loves experiencing new cultures. And to be a activism for peaceful traveling. She is doing this in a race for time, but if not, do u really think that she will get money support from sponsors? Win win. She is a smart girl. So please do not be negative. You do not know all the facts. So dont comment before you know the full story. Dont be jealous. I am ;)

There's visiting places, and then there's seeing and experiencing places. I get that it's about a record and for a cause but those $200,000 could have been spent on changing the lives of many people rather than getting stamps in a bunch of passports and taking 'seen a hundred times' selfies

She lucky she has an American passport!Otherwise many people would be faster than her!( I'm a big traveler and has been refused by USA embassy 3 times).U asked her on Instagram who is her sponsor and she blocked me!no fun just to be on the road during 15 months! It's not a real traveller soul to travel by plan all the time!So strange trips for 1 -2 days !I don't think she has some really interesting stories to tell afterwards! Waste of time and money! But she is famous lol!!

It's so ridicolous! Well, many would want to have this sort od achievement on there record I would just add that I would like to travel as much as she is even if that would only for a short while but travelling only for sake of travelling that's something else. Also, surprisingly they selected attractive, young women to do that...What they advertising yoga pants?

I think it's great, but we live in a culture where it seems to be more important to check things off a list rather than experience them fully. One cannot do this this quickly. But it's a neat feat!

Congrats to this young woman! But she is not the first. My mother Shesh Aandahl completed her journey traveling to every country in the world in May 2014. Yes, every single country. Shesh did not have social media so her amazing accomplishment did not get attention outside her family and friends.

lol lame. this is not traveling, nor she can be called a 'peace ambassador' . it's just a girl who runs through countries to get attention and money. and the record. not sure why somebody would sponsor her. she's not connecting to anything, just to the airports maybe.

As I'm sure the child soldiers in the Sudan and the 2.2 million of the Chinese military will do once they check their instagram.

I would really hate to spend so much time in airplanes even if it gets you to beautiful places. but nearly 2 years in the air? nope.

She's definitely having a great time but around three days per country, I think, is not enough, it's not really a travelling, just transit through large amount of countries. It seems she's doing sports or playing a game, not travelling, anyway, better this than not leaving your home at all :)

15 countries in 40 days is what, 2.5 day sin every country? minus the plane trip... that's not a vacation. although it is cool, i'd love to travel

Isn't white privilege beautiful? How wonderful she doesn't have to pay for hardly anything herself. She so deserves all this instead of doing something pointless like raising money to help people in her home town or something.

Sad, by my simple calculations she'll average around 2.5 days in each country, haha really clever, she'll definitely understand the culture in no time. India China Russia , Brazil , yeah 2.5 days is enough well may be 3 full days Is just perfect, happy travels , Waygoer

Allow all other passport holders to travel to places WITHOUT VISAS and this girl will find it hard to keep her "record". Big deal for an American! Pff

This will also beat the record in putting the highest amount of kerosene in to our atmosphere. Travel within and explore your soul! Better for you and the planet.

Only possible if you have an USA passport. The rest of us will just visit the 5 countries we are allowed...

Hanna, no one bothered to read the article. You're trying to point out facts to people who were clearly too judgmental and envious to take a few minutes to read why she is doing it and who paid for it. Save your keystrokes! :)

I am ;)
