“AITA For Being Upset That My Ex-Husband Fed Our Vegan Daughter Chicken McNuggets”
Children whose parents are divorced sometimes could be living two separate lives depending on which parent they are visiting at that period of time. One might be stricter than the other, one of the parents might have more money and allow more, or they might have different outlooks on life that influence daily decisions.
If parents can’t agree on the same way to bring up their kids, they should at least let the other parent know what values and habits they are instilling in their kids. But even that is too much to ask in some cases, like for Reddit user veggiecoparent who thought they were raising their daughter vegan but found out through a tantrum that her ex-husband was giving her chicken nuggets.
More info: Reddit
Mom wasn’t expecting her vegan daughter to throw a lengthy tantrum when she saw a McDonald’s, as she wasn’t aware she ate meat

The Original Poster (OP) is a mother who divorced her husband over a year before the story in the post took place. She found out that he was cheating on her, so they parted ways, but they still need to keep in touch as they have a daughter together. Even though the man wasn’t a very good husband, the mom describes him as a loving dad.
The ex-husband is a vegan and when the OP moved in with him, he educated the woman about how animal-based food was made and convinced her to be vegan too. Because they were both vegan when they had their daughter, it was natural for them to give her the same food they both ate.
The issue is that it seems the dad changed his mind about it but didn’t bother to tell his wife. And the OP found it out in a very unpleasant way.
She picked up their daughter, who was about 8 years old at the time, from her dad’s house at dinner time, so she was hungry. The girl saw McDonald’s through the window and had a meltdown over chicken nuggets.
The woman was raising her daughter vegan as her husband had introduced this diet to her so it was natural to feed their daughter the same

But the mom found out that the dad had been giving her chicken nuggets from McDonald’s when the girl threw a fit after not getting them from her mom

She was so enraged that she was blowing snot bubbles and crying the whole time she was eating her soup. The mom felt sorry for her kid but she didn’t want to give her what she wanted because that could have been interpreted as a reward for the tantrum.
The conflict was so intense that the next morning, the girl asked her mom if she hated her for eating meat. This is the part where a lot of people misinterpreted the mom’s feelings, thinking that she didn’t want her child to eat meat. The OP assured her daughter several times that she really didn’t hate her, it’s just that she was surprised as for the past 8 years she hadn’t craved it.

People who are vegan are often seen as annoying because they are considered to be picky eaters, hard to accommodate and too much to handle because of their views. But vegan parents who raise their children vegan get criticized even more.
Mostly non-vegans think that depriving children from animal-derived food is unhealthy, might make them grow shorter and weaker because they might not get all the nutrients a growing organism needs.
It’s not that she was disappointed or mad about the fact her daughter wanted meat, but she just was simply surprised about the change

People talk about a lot of things, so let’s look at what scientists have found. Research conducted by Polish scientists showed that children on vegan diets had healthier hearts and less cholesterol, although it was evident that vegan children have lower levels of vitamin B12, calcium, vitamin D and iron. They also had about 5 percent lower bone mineral and on average they were 3 centimeters (1.18 inches) shorter than children with an omnivorous diet.
We can see that the concern people have is founded, but everyone raises their children how they think it’s best and because the parents are probably vegans too, they are aware of these concerns.
What she was mad about was her ex-husband not saying anything and that out of all the choices he could have gone for, he took their daughter to McDonald’s

The stereotype surrounding people following vegan diets is that they like to talk about their lifestyle too much and make other people embrace it as well. But this doesn’t apply to the OP because she had no problem with her daughter eating meat – the problem was that she wasn’t aware of it.
Furthermore, McDonald’s isn’t known for its food quality, so if the dad wanted to introduce meat to their daughter’s diet, why choose chicken nuggets? Especially knowing that the girl’s grandad is a hunter and can cook the meat himself.
Not only that, but after having a meat-free diet, you should be careful introducing it into your meals as your digestive system might become sensitive for a while.
Another thing the OP was frustrated about is that her ex-husband didn’t even allow her to eat Oreos when she was pregnant and now he didn’t mind fast food
When she confronted her ex-husband about it, his excuse for not telling her about this change was that he knew she would overreact. It’s funny that this was his assumption when the OP didn’t start a vegan diet until he convinced her to.
Also, the woman describes her ex-husband as a health freak who made her feel guilty for eating Oreos when she had a craving while she was pregnant, so now she can’t wrap her head around him feeding their daughter McDonald’s.
But the main problem the woman had was that the dad took this decision on his own and didn’t even bother to mention anything to her

Raising their child vegan was both of the parents’ decision and the dad just decided that their daughter can have meat, which is not a big deal, but it would have been nice to have a heads-up and not find out about the change in a puddle of your child’s tears.
Maybe you think otherwise and believe that the mom made a big deal out of something that is not that important? Many people in the comments were on the mom’s side as they understood that this wasn’t about the diet itself but about communication, but others focused on the fact that the mom shouldn’t force veganism on her daughter. Let us know who you agree with in the comments!
People mainly were on the mom’s side but some of them were dubious if a vegan diet is good for a growing child
These people calling her TA obviously haven't read any of the redditor comments. The OP responds several times that she'd be fine if her daughter decides to eat meat. However, those who haven't eaten animal proteins before, or haven't eaten it in a long time, can get serious, painful stomach upsets if suddenly introduced to it. She said that, if her daughter was going to start eating meat, she would have rather it had been healthier than chicken nuggets- like the dishes her parents make. She didn't reward her daughter's tantrum, because you shouldn't encourage temper tantrums. That's just good parenting? She also made it clear to the daughter that it was okay, but that her behaviour (the tantrum) was bad. Also, the husband is the one who made the wife vegan and insisted on nothing but very healthy food- then turns around and feeds their daughter junkfood. She said that she just wished that the father discussed this with her, or at least told her. That's reasonable. NTA, in the least.
100% agree!! I worked as a pediatric nurse for years and if child/adult has been vegan, they have to take it slowly with reintroducing meat. The ex was a controlling jerk who dictated what the OP ate while pregnant and was the one who originally was a vegan. I think that since his new partner has 3 kids that are used to eating Mickey Ds, he’s letting his daughter and he should have respected her mother know as well as start the child out slowly for her body to adjust. For someone who threw a hissy fit because his pregnant wife didn’t get organic bananas, he is such a HYPOCRITE!
Load More Replies...Are people seriously just glossing over the fact that the OP wasn't vegan but after moving in and marrying that guy, she was made to go vegan and raise their kid to be vegan until he divorced her and lets the kid eat whatever they want?? Like no s**t she's upset, if the dad never told the mom that he was no longer vegan and changed their kids diet as well without letting her know, he's the only a*****e in this situation. What a selfish prick to not inform the other parent of a pretty big dietary change, and also made that decision without her input
NTA. There’s no problem with being vegan or vegetarian but if your ex-husband allowed her to eat meat then he should’ve told you. It was good of you to not reward her temper tantrum
Bummed the Reddit is locked, because it’s not about the meat. It’s about the LACK OF COMMUNICATION! 🤦🏽♀️ Mom is NTA, and has every right to be pissed off! Again. NOT.ABOUT.THE.MEAT! (Except how it will mess with her kid’s digestive system after not eating it for a long time…) If he had reached out to the other parent, saying, “Hey, just a heads up, I’m giving OUR CHILD food she hasn’t had before,” I think she’d have been more OK with it. Just COMMUNICATE, folks!
NTA. It was both parents decision to raise their daughter vegan so it should be both that decide to change it. In the very least, the dad should have told the mom. But I also hope that the mom would now speak to her daughter and help her make an informed decision about her diet.
Not a parent, worked restaurants for over 20yrs now and I don’t think kids should be vegan - but DONT INTRODUCE YOUR KIDS TO NUGGETS. It’s an obvious equation, the nugget obsession with some kids is disturbing and the meltdown they have over nuggets is amusing but kinda scary when you realise it’s over nuggets. Don’t do it parents, pretend nuggets are non existent
You don't have a vegan daughter. You have an eight-year-old kid you're forcing your own dietary choices onto. Let the kid decide for herself. If she doesn't want to be vegan, you have no right to force her.
Parents ALWAYS force their dietary choices on their children. That is the entire purpose of parenting. Eating meat is also a dietary choice

This used to be a source of interesting information, art, travel, etc. Now most of the content is cry of snowflakes who are not able to solve their own, mostly childish, problems 🤷🏻♀️
One thing doesn’t make sense. If she’s vegan, why does she have chicken nuggets in the freezer she could have given her daughter?
vegan alternatives exist. I often buy Fry's chia and rice protein nuggets because they are gluten free and taste quite similar to what I remember chicken nuggets tasting like
Load More Replies...If the mom is vegan, why does she have chicken nuggets in the freezer? Have they been there for 8+ years since before she was vegan? Or did I misunderstand that part?
Chicken Nuggets and Chick'n Nuggets are different. Chick'n Nuggets are the vegan alternative to Chicken Nuggets.
Load More Replies..."YTA cause you're forcing her to be vegan she's old enough to make her own decision" Okay listen up, this child was raised vegan and doesn't have the enzymes to break down meat. The mother is not forcing anyone to be vegan. The mother is just pissed that her ex husband (who is also vegan) let her daughter eat meat so suddenly without letting her know. Also if she's old enough to make her own decision, maybe she shouldn't be snot bubble crying and throwing a fit.
This was not the first time the girl ate 'meat' as it was mentioned that Dad did this often when he had her on weekends. Is this girl homeschooled? Cause I've known students who go against that at school w/lunches. As a staff, as long as it's not a known food allergy, the student can eat whatever is on their tray. So I wouldn't be surprised that this is not a short term issue, as she wasn't 'sick' as a puppy before to the point that mom became worried and asked about her diet in the past. Just saying ,it could be the reality that mom is unaware of.
I came in here to expect to say TA. HE WAS THE VEGAN THAT SHE ACCOMADATED SO WTF
It’s simple. Being Vegan is a PERSONAL choice. The child is unable to make that choice for herself because, well, she’s a child. Mom and Dad may be Vegan, and they may have fed her a Vegan diet. But, it’s not by her choice. Serve her McNuggets and Apples!
I'm more worried about the behavioural issues which seem to be stemming from the chaos when she stays at her dad's place. Previously she had her own room but now, since he moved in his gf who already had 3 kids, she is reduced to sharing a bed with 2 of the younger kids. That is wrong and I'd honestly consider whether it's a suitable place for their daughter to be.
The father is an idiot. He's got a new gf a bunch of new kids and he's transforming himself. There are guys like this. I had an ex who was an ex smoker and for years got incredibly angry when somebody smoked around him, saying they didn't have respect and similar bs. Years. Then he moved to London and after a week he was there he was a smoker again. This guy is the same. The fact that he was obsessed while she was pregnant (and honestly F him for forcing her on diet while pregnant) is a signal of how it had nothing to do with health and more about some stupid thought he had at the time. New girl, all of that is gone. And...of all he could feed her daughter, chicken nuggets? Come on.
i think you are the a*****e for raising a kid as a vegan. Irresponsible parenting
I think it's more about a major change in child-rearing that wasn't communicated rather than just a food issue.
Sounds like she's finally able to choose and she's chosen chicken nuggets.
Then they should slowly reintroduce meat into her diet so her body can create enzymes to break it down again.
Load More Replies...Some people responding to the OP's story need to go back to school and learn how to read and comprehend. Do NOT COMMENT - if you have not read the OP's story : but if you must then answer her question, not tell her something she didn't ask for.
More importantly, at this point, I would like to know if relations between the exes was permanently damaged or if they were able to repair the rift?
I've read comments saying she cannot force her kid to be a vegan if she wants to eat meat. Well, to some extent, I disagree. Here me out: parents make decisions for their kids and they force them to do/not to do things everyday. In every aspects of life. Parents choose their kids' religion, education, sports, extra-school activities, place to live, way of life in general. And food as well. Of course, some compromise must be made. If your kid loathes, let's say, carrots and it's not just a tantrum, we can agree that it's not the end of the world if they don't eat carrots. There's plenty of other veggies they can eat and appreciate. But, granted that the kid receives a healthy nutrition, I think it's up to the parents to decide what's to/not to eat. If left alone, a kid would only eat unhealthy food/junk food, we all know it. Parents are the adults and they make the decisions regarding their kids health.
...So if a parent thinks a vegan/vegetarian/ whole food diet is the healthiest option for their kid (monitored by their pediatrician, of course) they are not wrong in "forcing" their kid to follow the same diet. I mean, it's the same thing with religion, isn't it? Parents force their kid to follow their religion because they think it's the only right religion and not following it would be a bad bad thing. Again, I want to reiterate that the chosen diet must be a safe, healthy diet, monitored by doctors and supported by the World Health Organization (which states that veganism is perfectly safe, even for kids, if regularly monitored). I'll add that raising your kids as vegans is considered not ok but regularly eating fast food/frozen food/junk food is not a big deal, right? I'm not a vegan myself, by the way. I just hate hypocrisy.
Load More Replies...She says she will allow her child to make her own diet choices "when she is old enough". The girl is 8 YEARS OLD! How old is "old enough" to be allowed to choose if you want to be vegan or not? 18? 21?
It's more how they'll need to be a bit more mature, cause throwing a fit like that, at 8, is way not mature. Plus you need to slowly reintroduce meat so that your body can start producing the enzymes needed to break down meat
Load More Replies...Got to love the idiots calling her TA and saying she should "keep communication open" when the whole point is that her ex didn't communicate so she was blind-sided by the tantrum 🤦♂️
There can be serious health risks to suddenly feeding your child meat if they've never had it. Best to consult a professional on how to introduce meats properly. I don't support vegan lifestyle at all but this situation the dad was dead wrong and could cause serious health complications.
You clearly never had a kid having a tantrum because they HATE HATE HATE BROCCOLI! THEY WANT ICECREAM INSTEAD! So what? Their body biologically needs icecream? 😕 Kids have tantrums, that's it. Over minor stupid things. Don't overanalyze it. Oh and the best ones are when they throw a tantrum over something they've always eaten and suddenly it becomes the most disgusting food in the world. Ah, fun times...

yes why would she be mad when the guy who forced her to be vegan let their daughter eat meat without informing her, not even introducing the child to something healthier and gradual if the kid wanted to eat meat. the AUDACITY of some people?
Load More Replies...ESH. Both parents should be able to feed their child as they see fit. OP is totally overreacting. Family counseling and a nutritionist might help. Make sure everyone's getting their vitamins and nutrients - low levels can cause emotional dramas like this.
She says she's fine with her daughter eating meat so the issue is one of being told? She has strong feelings on this so I get why dad didn't tell her. He's right, she really doesn't need to know every little thing - esp when she says she doesn't mind. This DOES feel like controlling behaviour, he has as much right to decide her diet and make decisions. She could equally decide to become vegan when she's older too..
Actually she does need to know, because it seems that this kid wasn't slowly reintroduced to meat and that can cause some serious health complications.
